You need some good news? I need some good news.

Season 3 of Good Omens is confirmed.

@neilhimself @Monina6969 @golgaloth I was just so very very sure that the ending of s2 was the end of it. Nicely bowed up and all.

Genuinely looking forward to S3, it’s been a rather lovely show. Still don’t know how you can top I’m in love with my car. :)

Just need to time it so I can watch s1 and 2 at the perfect time to start 3. I have come to quite prefer shows short enough that I can rewatch them.

For every new version of iOS I use, I swear the auto correction is getting worse. It swaps
in words that aren’t even close to what I intended, and even swaps correctly spells words at times.

Is this some AI malarkey? Just worse algorithms? It was already not great at fixing spelling mistakes sadly:(

breadbin,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@chikorita157 I use Siri a lot, but for very very narrow use cases. Turning things on/off. Reminders. Timers.

Siri is really damn bad at it:( I’m sure there’s fantastic scenarios that are complex and a good reason why it doesn’t work.

BUT, my use cases are dead simple:(

(I want a more automated house over time, but I don’t want the spy versions, so I’ve gone slow. It’s one TV, AppleTVs, and some lights.)

breadbin,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@SinclairSpeccy I sadly sucked at it, but I remember when you were Elite if you were cool:)

I’d eat up a video or post on the evolution of 1337 speak. But boy would that be a lot of work to be done truly well.

I can’t even remember it and I lived through the era.

I’m oddly interested in those things:) Same with wanting a video on anime/manga styles over the years.

breadbin,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@SinclairSpeccy properlu :) Self fulfilling to the max. :)

breadbin,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@SinclairSpeccy I can’t spell well, no h8 from me:) It’s better to (friendly) laugh at it.

Speaking a language well doesn’t mean someone is smart, and visa versa. Especially when it ends up being a language you learn later in life.

I see everything, I am the sentinel! I’m the electric eye! I am constantly sleep deprived.

breadbin,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@chikorita157 Yeah if used to work in a predicable way. But now perfectly normal and correctly spelt words can change into a different word (with all different letters) after you type 1-3 more words.

It’s infuriating:(

I must confess to using AI sarcastically privately. As kind of a “hands up in the air do we never learn?” last ditch effort.

They threw all those neural engines on there, guess they want to use them:/ If it’s all local data, no bleed, and worked I’d be fine. But it’s 💩💩💩.

@drahardja@sfba.social avatar

I was reminded of a post I read recently about how “AI” is going to cause so much spam and disinformation (intentional or otherwise) and so much erosion in credibility, that the only reliable sources of news will be trusted networks of friends, not popular news media outlets, whose reporting will be either credulously fake, or manipulated.

And it dawned on me: for a small group of US citizens, this is already the reality of today. People in cults, conspiracy theory groups, and MAGA circles already believe that news media is credulous or manipulated (“fake”), and that the only reliable sources of news is their trusted circle of like-minded friends, who only confirm their biases and keep them tied to their dogmas.

(cont’d)

breadbin,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@drahardja While I agree I think it breaks down when objective lies enter the field. Political spectrum bias is one thing (and big media wise we have right and far right to choose from in the U.S.), because I can counter for that. Event A happened (truth) and we think it’s good/bad (bias).

But when it’s genuine lies, how can I start trusting anything from that source? And worse, most people are so bogged down in their lives that they don’t have the energy to sift through it:(

breadbin,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@drahardja The meta question is, why isn’t news media in general trusted, and could news change to become more trustworthy?

For example most people know newspapers, networks, and anchors. But can they name the journalists?

Because you are bang on, isolation isn’t the solution at all. That just means I get no info at all. Most of us dingbats here aren’t much of a source.

@e_urq I trust. He’s earned it over time. I trust his intentions, and he will post “errata”. I know him by name.

breadbin,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@drahardja There’s also the commercial aspect, who owns it, the lack of being tougher on subjects, and a whole range of things.

I don’t have any big trust in media, and try to take in things from multiple sources (being bilingual helps a bit too). I’m not paranoid, and I don’t get my “news” from some opinion makers. But rather I can get too little info.

I can clearly hear too much about Trump, but seldom get to hear if Biden does something positive. I think better sources would change that.

@Jaden2 Maybe your mom wants you to help because she wants to spend time with you, because you are her favorite?

Adults don’t always communicate well. :/ If she wanted your siblings there she’d call for them.

I have to confess I’ve never been attracted to the story of Willy Wonka, never had the desire to read the books, never watched the movies. But I didn’t realize how racist some of the core components of the story were. https://newsie.social/@TheConversationUS/111586093369747489

breadbin,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@drahardja I think stereotypes were so ingrained in the past that few thought much about it. Not to say that it was good, but I remember reading things as a child and not reacting to it, but I would today.

Then again when I grew up there were virtually no black people around. Africa could just as well been made up for all I knew.

As an adult in a much more global world (and having moved 7 timezones) I now see it clearly. Jewish, Asian, and Black stereotypes that are horrific all around us:(

breadbin,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@drahardja But again censoring it or forbidding it etc isn’t great either. At least with authors long gone I feel that if their work doesn’t promote it I’m fine. Alive authors who should know better, I will not consume knowingly.

I am on the other hand very pro of handing children and young people good media that promotes kindness and empathy and wonder and excitement and equality.

There will be enough misery later. But selective is different from censorships and bans.

breadbin,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@drahardja Tintin was an example I had in mind. Also the Smurfs (Gargamel and Azrael becomes less fun when you realize the full inspirations). We have the BS in Pippi Longstocking (though I commit a national sin by not liking the author’s work. She wrote a lot of messed up stuff). Wonka.

Lovecraft was pretty damn hyper racist. In fact a lot of authors did terrible things or had horrible views. Pretty sure me with my limited knowledge could point out enough to sadden some people here.

what games did i play this year? oh. uh. openttd?

breadbin,

@eniko You spent a lot of time on this game called The Fediverse. I also noticed you played an awful lot of “Personal Coding Projects” and “Dealing with shit”.

I’d stay away from the DLC on that last one though, it’s a depressing time sink.

More seriously, do game devs end up playing less games, or are some just such big fans they live games 24/7?

breadbin,

@sayomgwtf Reminds me of the recon they did around the names. Mario brothers, so Luigi is Luigi Mario, and Mario is Mario Mario. sigh

Could have just said that Mario got the most attention by others as a kid, and they got collectively known as the Mario brothers. It’s not like it hasn’t happened before that one kid names the gang :)

@majorlinux The government forcing companies to do this is a massive issue. It’s very fascist.

Thinking about how for school I had to research a "leader" whether it was a political leader, sporting leader or business-minded leader.

I picked Sir Clive Sinclair as I didn't know what to do at the time, but now I am wondering what other people could have worked. Steve Wozniak? Jack Tramiel?

breadbin,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@SinclairSpeccy Leader can make it tricker, since many weren’t. Woz certainly wasn’t. Jobs was (so recommend folklore.org if you want to hear what the people who were there haven’t say). Grace Hopper wasn’t a leader, but she was super badass and interesting for sure.

If you had asked me, I would have suggested Dag Hammarsköld, because few know of him today, but more should. His death changed so much of our world today, and not for the better. :(

Or if tech, Cray. Interesting mad scientist.

Interesting to think that years ago with retro computers and all that kids built with computer kits and such but then it died out… only for this kind of thing to come around again with STEM projects.
