First was a wide-ranging panel on fast fashion and racial capitalism at Brown University with Minh-Ha T. Pham, Jennifer (JJ) Rosenbaum, and Dina Siddiqi https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8RUi6Bzy84 (2/12) #sociology
Next was a short conversation with Chong (Steven) Xiao on how ESG ratings predict consumer purchasing patterns to a surprising degree on the Business Scholarship Podcast https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzKgqQT8Emg (4/12) #ESG
Next was a great talk by Annie McClanahan on historic discourses around economic decay and stagnation at Brown. McClanahan shows how the same discredited theories about economic limits and inevitable stagnation pop up throughout history, which should give folks pause when considering our current issues https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZO0oFDdWwVk (5/12) #economics#history
Clearly spring is in the air for turkeys, and while enjoying the seasonal wildlife activity I was also able to listen to some talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist! (1/8)
First was a nice slate of talks at the Maastricht University Faculty of Law by Martijn Snoep (an enforcer's perspective on the green and digital transition), @kasnder (Ticketmaster, online bots, and the price of concert tickets), and Maria José Schmidt-Kessen (human rights and corporate sustainability due diligence for improving antitrust law) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vczQsxVQajA (2/6) #law#antitrust
Next was a fantastic pair of talks by Justine Haekens (analysis of Spotify playlist composition through the lens of copyright and competition law) and @JuanDGut (implementation of AI by Colombia's competition agency and IP office) at Maastricht University. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNiyQSdPysI (4/6) #law#Spotify#Colombia
Last was an excellent talk by @jtlg on generative AI and copyright at the Allen Institute for AI. Favorite quote: "It's not at all obvious that the incentives to create of the sort that copyright offers are the appropriate system of law to govern this new [technology]. It may be that what replaces copyright due to generative AI is as different from copyright as copyright was from the patronage system that came before it." Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toPhm4zBp00 (6/6) #GenerativeAI#copyright
@jbigham Massive collapse of mid tier universities is right around the corner, especially mid tier schools charging prices like this. Assuming they got a job instead, or go to a community college while working, after 4 years kids who forgo these schools will be at least $550K ahead. It's unlikely the differential earnings from a 4 year degree would come even close to making up this gap
@jbigham I would argue that at schools like CMU it's a valid argument, but after you get out of the top tier the brand cachet is worth very little and students will certainly learn just as much at community colleges for a small fraction of the cost.
I think the timing on them going out is relatively short - a few decades
