I’m a writer, but don’t expect deep, personal shit. I’m a sysadmin who doesn’t like nerds, they’re every bit as willing to be the most vicious and petty of bullies as the people they claim they’re so very different from.

But as individuals, they’re all right.

A lefty who hunts, so not an NRA fan. Done martial arts for years, not one of the MMA clowns.

If I say “free software” I ONLY am speaking of the price.

New reality show:

Worst Farm Life, Featuring fun contests like:

Chopping down the honey locust trees. Safety gear is boots & gloves

Dealing with the cute raccoon in the hen house. No Shelly, catch & release don’t work

TICKS

Fixing the lawnmower with only parts on hand & a barely functional internet connection.

Time to cull the chickens!

Oh look, we have to clean out the coop!

What do you mean the neighbor’s cows got free & are all in the field?

Cows are mean and can both run and jump!

I really want to lift up the mods of the SFBA instance: @cd24, @Ingurido, @jeffkibuule

I, a Black woman, have had a marvelous experience on Mastodon because these mods don't play. For being a place-specific instance, SFBA has a very clearly expressed value system and it's reflected in the mods. They are proactive, even-handed, and respectful.

I wish others on and through the could say the same of their instance mods.

@DeliaChristina @alienghic @Kclemson tag usage is not equal across clients. Some don’t support it beyond putting them in posts. So if you start with one of those clients, it never has importance.

@ncrav @DeliaChristina @alienghic @Kclemson

So first, thank you for both the assumptions and demonstrating you didn’t even read your own docs.

I invite you to, in the link you provided, go to the Google doc, and under tags, check out the entry for ivory and Metatext.

For my part, it is far too early to deal with yet another nerd assuming the only reason for someone saying or doing something is stupidity or ignorance. Bye now.

@DeliaChristina it is. Part of the joy of different approaches, everyone prioritizes different things.

@BlackAzizAnansi random remixes. Current fave is 50 Cent vs. the Bee-Gees, an amazing mix with “Staying Alive” as the backing track.

After spending the day chopping down 20 honey locust trees I have an image for a horror movie poster, just a line giant honey locust tree in a field.

Name of movie: “Honey Locust”

Tagline: “Hate Grows”

The origin of the tree is that it grew from the crown of thorns Christ wore.

But like 70s horror, complete with nutso caretaker local telling people to keep away, that tree’s evil, and a local indigenous group trying to figure out how to kill it and failing for centuries.

bynkii,
@bynkii@mastodon.social avatar

The land it’s on gets bought by a honkie tech yuppie family, burnt out and wanting to “return to the land.”

They buy a hundred acres in fuckoff missouri, with a LOT of honey locusts, and they keep growing back no matter what they try.

Then they learn you have to kill the mother tree, which is a truly giant tree. Cue a string of bloody thorn-caused deaths and you’re never really sure if the tree is really evil or the humans are all stupid.

honey locust trees are just fucking awful.

I need to post this on Tumblr…

Shit is popping off on Bluesky.

(I'm not leaving Mastodon don't worry, it's like a shitpost channel mostly for stuff the curmudgeons won't let me post here, like pictures of if Cortana was a mermaid.)

It's painful watching so many nerds wonder why people are flocking to Blue Sky while shitting on things like being able to respond to messages with quotes, people who have large followings, UX that makes signing up easy for non-techies etc.

bynkii,
@bynkii@mastodon.social avatar

@outeast @BlackAzizAnansi I’m still being told QTs are only used for abuse.

Always by a cishet male honkie fossstan.

A L W A Y S.

bynkii,
@bynkii@mastodon.social avatar

@braddyg @outeast @BlackAzizAnansi yup. The argument that QTs are inherently and unavoidably toxic is completely unsupported by any evidence.

And the voices saying it are remarkably homogenous.

bynkii,
@bynkii@mastodon.social avatar

@wcbdata @outeast @BlackAzizAnansi here’s the thing: quotes already exist. It’s a client implementation. (Amusingly, that was where QT started on twitter.) The anti-QT crowd has failed.

Period. They have failed.

But the worst part about it is that in failing the way they chose, they have removed any possibility of managing it in the protocol. Opt-in/opt out? Nope. Ability to restrict it at the instance level? Lol, nope.

bynkii,
@bynkii@mastodon.social avatar

@wcbdata @outeast @BlackAzizAnansi

So not only have the anti’s failed, they failed in a way that prevents any and all forms of protocol/instance-level management.

They are exactly like the dingalings who went to war against all non-plaintext email in the 1990s, are failing in exactly the same way, and are too headass to realize it.

The good/bad argument literally has no value anymore, now it’s about how to mitigate harm. Including it in the protocol is the only way.

bynkii,
@bynkii@mastodon.social avatar

@wcbdata @outeast @BlackAzizAnansi by doing that, you remove extra work for the client devs, they can remove now-unnecessary code (which is hugely effective) and the chance of management/harm mitigation increases from the current zero.

Or keep fighting a lost battle. Flog that dead horse, but it is definitely dead.

bynkii,
@bynkii@mastodon.social avatar

@wcbdata @outeast @BlackAzizAnansi

Remember my comment about the unbearable whiteness of mastodon? You anger at having current reality pointed out to you?

That’s what I’m talking about.

bynkii,
@bynkii@mastodon.social avatar

@asjmcguire @wcbdata @outeast @BlackAzizAnansi that’s a fair point & a good observation.

My point here is that the anti-QT folks who think they can, or have prevented QTs from happening if they keep them out of the protocol are not only operating outside of reality (QTs are here as a client implementation now), have forgotten or never knew how QTs first showed up on Twitter, (client feature), but by fighting a battle that is already lost, they are setting up the same harm they wish to avoid.

bynkii,
@bynkii@mastodon.social avatar

@asjmcguire @wcbdata @outeast @BlackAzizAnansi the only way to have any control over QTs like you wish is to have them be a part of the protocol, so that those features are implemented centrally, and to heavily encourage client devs to use that implementation instead of rolling their own.

That will require a fair bit of work on the API side, but it is possible, although folks have to accept that it’s impossible to completely prevent linking to a given post.

bynkii, (edited )
@bynkii@mastodon.social avatar

@asjmcguire @outeast @BlackAzizAnansi yep. And the masto API people seem good at making good APIs, so there’s room for optimism.

Which is good because right now, as you point out, things are about a mess.

bynkii,
@bynkii@mastodon.social avatar

@TomKayX @flargh @Wraithe the thing is, both TNG and DS9 almost only gave backstory on Klingons in the shallowest of ways.

DS9 showed some insight into Klingon families, but that was it. And for both shows, you could about swap any Klingon out for another and not really notice.

Dear god were Klingons homogenous in both shows.

All of the posts on Mastodon about how the Blue Sky team was silly for releasing a social media network in 2023 without blocking and moderation, even in private beta, and that the Blue Sky team should have known what would happen...

...are being written on Mastodon: a social media platform that in 2023, still doesn't take into account that Black users face a disproportionate amount of very specific types of abuse, and is missing key features that would make the Black population safer. 🙂🙃

bynkii,
@bynkii@mastodon.social avatar

@GreenFire @mekkaokereke @Ear_bele @BlackAzizAnansi in my experience, 100% of my negative interactions are with honkies. 95+% are with cishet males.

The number of negative interactions with people outside of those two sets are not even a rounding error in comparison.

Honestly, I would fully support a social media platform that banned cishet honkie males.

I would also be terribly envious of it.
