I fervently believe Benson will live forever.

Lalala, I can't hear you.
Nope.

DeliaChristina, to random
@DeliaChristina@sfba.social avatar

Don't even get me started on that new Bumble ad.

DeliaChristina,
@DeliaChristina@sfba.social avatar

Fine.
I'll get started on it.

So Bumble sees that women are 'choosing the bear' and decides that online dating is in trouble (particularly their app which is seeing women users just dwindle because it's terrible.)

So they wipe their platforms and tease a relaunch with a mini campaign that pretty much nails why women (esp Gen Z) are choosing the bear.

DeliaChristina,
@DeliaChristina@sfba.social avatar

And the reason they're choosing the bear, which their campaign inadvertently shows, is that DUDES are terrible.

No social skills, gaslighting, don't even seem to like women, emotionally stunted, and just not very great overall too focused on fucking on the first date, don't seem to want to get to know the women, etc.

DeliaChristina,
@DeliaChristina@sfba.social avatar

What does Bumble do?

It tweaks their app, rolls out a bunch of new features like an AI to urge women to 'break the ice' faster (who asked for this).

And they run an ad that basically shows a young woman wanting to live her best life, swearing off dating, and going to some fucked up nunnery where she lusts after the hot gardener.

The Mother Superior of Celibacy I guess, gives her the Bumble app and she leaves. Presumably for a janky ass life dating tech bros from the bay area.

DeliaChristina,
@DeliaChristina@sfba.social avatar
DeliaChristina,
@DeliaChristina@sfba.social avatar

These are the problems:
One, don't fucking insult the intelligence of your target market.

Jesus christ.

Two, telling women who choose their own company that their own company is like going to a convent is NOT GREAT.

Three, women choosing the bear IRL are actually living really fulfilled lives and they look NOTHING like a nunnery. They're finding peace, self actualization, other friends, hobby farms, and doing incredible interior design on a budget while rescuing pit bulls.

THAT's what bros have to compete with. Not a convent.

FINALLY, the problem that needs to be solved isn't WOMEN. It's the terrible BROS.

But Bumble didn't brag about the wonder dudes they have on their app.

Because there aren't any.

DeliaChristina,
@DeliaChristina@sfba.social avatar

So Bumble ran a campaign targeting BROS' EGOS rather than the key demographic they rely on: women.

Stupid marketing, man.
Stupid.

DeliaChristina,
@DeliaChristina@sfba.social avatar

Compare this to Match's campaign that ran on TikTok.

Did they insult women?
No.
They gave women what they wanted: men doing chores.

They chose 5 regular dudes who had profiles that were getting zero love.

They redid their profiles by showing them doing chores (like, literally doing laundry) and rewrote their profile content for the female gaze.

And guess what? These dudes got CLICKS.

And Match ran a campaign on that. It was fun. Appealing. Showed women that what they want is on the platform.

Huzzah!

DeliaChristina,
@DeliaChristina@sfba.social avatar

Stupid marketing for the male gaze (Bumble) vs Smart marketing for the female gaze (Match).

Right?
I don't even like Match and I was like, Kudos! That was a good campaign!

A Jewish friend from grad school is a prof on one of these campuses.

He just texted me and said his daughter was arrested at the encampment on her campus. She's barred from going back to the encampment or more charges will be filed.

My friend and his wife are very thankful she was arrested.

Him: I hate this script. I'm an agonized Jewish liberal dad with a radical Jewish daughter who's fighting for liberation. I'm proud of her but I hate all of this.

My Jewish friends are going through it. I feel for them.

Late last year, I ran a small project with a nonprofit in San Francisco. We gave out instant film cameras (color and black and white) to 5 people who were either unhoused or who lived nearby in one of the 'SROs'. We did a tiny, tiny exhibition.

I'm still working to figure out how to make this a more regular thing, and how to show their work, because they have such amazing stories to tell.

There's a bench in my apartment and when I sit on it, that tells Benson one of two things is happening:

We're getting ready for a walk.
Or it's Mommy time.

Mommy time is when Benson asks for physical affection and play. And he plays rough.

I think people would be alarmed if they saw the way me and Benson play. He's all big head, wide open mouth, big teeth, and crazy eyes jumping and pulling and tugging and zoomie-ing, and biting (on the toys in my hands), and growling. It's effing terrifying looking. He makes me laugh. I love it.

A couple times I misjudge the distance between my fingers and his canines but not very often. He sometimes gets too excited and wants to chew on my shoe but not very often.

He's big and heavy and those teeth are no joke. But he's my big Schmoopie.

All eyes on Gaza (and the West Bank), please.

I feel now that Hamas agreed to a condition that Izzy has no reason to agree to, and now that the people taking refuge in Rafah are being leafletted to evacuate (where?) and there's stuff already happening in the West Bank, things are heading to a crisis-crisis.

DeliaChristina,
@DeliaChristina@sfba.social avatar

That Onion article the other day is really too prescient.

I guess everything will 'resolve' itself when the population of Palestinians has basically been reduced to triple digits.

Then, at that point, all the folks with a vested interest in having a geopolitical partner and human laboratory for weapons development, military training, and cutting edge surveillance tech will be satisfied.

No more 'complexity.'

Brunch with a friend.
We're both GenX.

Me: M-, are you radical now?

Him: Yes. Well, more radical than I was before. I mean, I'm a white guy. People are used to the bare minimum from me. But shit is fucked up and fuckit. I'm going to do more than that now and if that means radical then yeah, I'm radical.

And then he went on an ACAB rant that was stupendous. This man was raised a good moderate Lutheran and his father was a Lutheran minister. He runs an arts/performance nonprofit in the city. He's got kids, an ex, a current partner, and a mortgage.

He's not a black bloc radical. But he has stepped far away from his socialization. When good liberals are now ACAB, something is happening.

Al Jazeera now banned in Israel.

Things are wild.

As the US bans TikTok I don't have to say how problematic it is for a State to censor a media platform.

I'm glad y'all are sharing and conversing about my Barack Obama Made America Go Bonkers toot.

Some of you missed the point but that's ok.

Obama did not cause America's endemic and historic problematicness.

He was the extra pill your doctor adds to your current regime of meds to BOOST the effect of your current meds.

Obama's cultural significance and also stubborn political moderation was the BOOST, the kick in the pants, America's inner Pennywise needed to really announce itself.

But carry on.

I'm mentally preparing myself to walk this dog in the rain and then clean an apartment to prepare for getting my edges turnt later tonight.

I swear, having a Black president literally made America go insane.

When I think about how utterly wiiiiild everything is, I think, Hm, what was the catalyst? What was the thing that made half this country go completely bonkers?

Barack Obama.

It was literally like they kept running that scene in their heads from Blazing Saddles when the Black sheriff shows up and says 'Where the white women at?!' (god i love that scene)

That's what they were expecting from BO.
