I followed a bunch of artists and content creators and I got annoyed when the entire feed became just interspersed with Musk’s ramblings and bullshit. I never followed him and I didn’t want promoted content.

SA used to be great. That move actually made the forums a pretty good place for a while because it kept out a few demographics including bots and kids.

Something Awful, YTMND and Newgrounds were basically the comedic engines of the internet back then.

Good 'ol pre-YouTube internet.

RCS is a carrier feature.

The centralization exists with iMessage because only iPhones can use the protocol. By fall of 2024 RCS will be adopted by iPhones as well.

They’re both planning on the same thing, it sounds like.

It doesn’t sound like Disney is licensing their content to Netflix, they’re both just essentially replicating cable TV based on their catalogues with ads interspersed.

You also don’t have to worry about it fucking disappearing on you unless you have a drive failure.

It does cater to the adult cartoon crowd but it caters to trekkies in general. Mike McMahan has been a fan of Star Trek forever and as the showrunner did a lot of good universe building within the confines of the TNG era. It has a lot of callbacks and references and is just a fun and funny way to enjoy Star Trek.

I really liked it, I considered it one of the better shows in general, because being lead by a true fan and not just a writers room with notes allowed the show to be a fun little exploration and expansion of the universe, showing us the side of Starfleet we don’t see very often.

Some people have criticized it for being too goofy with the argument that Starfleet officers are supposed to be professional. My counter is simply that not all officers are bridge crew material and there are so many mistakes that happen across all the random ships in the fleet that it’s fun to center on one and see how it’s going.

I don’t understand this comment, because they don’t?

They’re both at the forefront of developing things like processors and displays. Exynos, Bionic and Snapdragon processors all compete for the top spot and push each other’s development forward. The tech that went into Bionics and Snapdragons have been translated to laptop form factors and the Snapdragon X kicks ass. Samsung has some of the best display technology on the planet and similarly pushes the industry forward.

They do objectively make good, cutting edge consumer hardware, but I am sure this is mostly about their design practices of removing things like the SD card and headphone jack and being anti-consumer for repairs. Yeah, they do suck at both of those things, but literally everything else about the phones are not only considered top tier by the average consumer but are literally the trend setters across the entire industry.

Wasn’t Prodigy cancelled entirely? Didn’t they sell the final animated season to Netflix?

The franchise should appeal to other demographics other than the ones that are currently enjoying it to broaden its portfolio and horizons, but not at their expense.

Discovery pissed a lot of people off, I know you like it, but it undeniably annoyed a lot of people alongside Picard. It feels like it was a middle ground between nostalgia plays and trying something new. Eventually it did lead to Strange New Worlds which a lot of established fans really like, but it took Discovery the average two seasons to figure out and find its footing. When it freed itself from being beholden to nostalgia grabs in the TOS era it became something unique that stood on its own in my opinion.

I really like both Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks, and Mike McMahan did a great job of creating something that was made with reverence for the source material despite being jocular in tone. I’m upset because I’ll miss it when it’s gone because the replacement is not something I am interested in. It’s like having a really great coworker move to another department and having a replacement who just doesn’t get you.

@canis_majoris@lemmy.ca avatar

Did they also say they were ending SNW? You’re sounding like they’ve cancelled like the entire slate just to have this Starfleet Academy show.

canis_majoris,
@canis_majoris@lemmy.ca avatar

I don’t mind a planned finale.

They’re definitely not going to just have the one show, if history repeats itself. TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT were all overlapping by a season or two each.

I can’t imagine they’re going to just have a young adult show, a Michelle Yeoh Section 31 movie or whatever, and then nothing else. There’s definitely no way Prodigy is part of this plan, especially if Netflix is the one seeking to fund it. If three things are ending, then they have the production budget and staffing to produce three more different things. Star Trek is one of their most valuable IPs, it would be hilariously terrible if mismanagement led to it just totally floundering.

I think they should replace Kurtzmann with Seth Macfarlane for the next round.

canis_majoris,

It’s insane to think the creator of Family Guy is perfect to spearhead Star Trek but he made an entire three seasons worth of Fox-sponsored cosplay with Orville and fuck me if I didn’t love every bit of it.

If they kept it semi-in house, they could also bring up Mike McMahan. I think he’s the Dave Filoni of Star Trek.

canis_majoris,
@canis_majoris@lemmy.ca avatar

I want to enjoy my favorite franchise and you’re calling me an asshole because other people exist. I understand other people exist, I am a person, and I want to watch Star Trek just like you are a person who wants to watch Star Trek. Your strawman argument is needlessly hostile when all we both want to do is have and watch different kinds of Star Trek. Just because my preferential parts of the franchise happened to come before yours does not make it invalid. The three concurrent airing shows proves they can all exist at the same time. They should continue to do so in different forms, exploring strange new worlds.

You can make more than one show that appeals to multiple demographics.

canis_majoris,
@canis_majoris@lemmy.ca avatar

Bro you literally strawmanned my argument. You literally put words in my mouth. I don’t get why you’re always on edge. We’re literally just discussing fucking science fiction on the internet. Did I need to say “essentially calling me an asshole?” Should I have said “being hostile about opinions?”

I really don’t get you Stamets. Every time we interact you’re just super aggro.

It makes me feel like I can’t contribute in any meaningful way to threads around you because you’ll just call me super rude things like “utterly wrong” which I think is massively aggressive for no reason just on the basis that we disagree on something.

canis_majoris,
@canis_majoris@lemmy.ca avatar

I don’t want to discuss Star Trek with you anymore either. It seems we’re unable to do so amicably.

canis_majoris,
@canis_majoris@lemmy.ca avatar

That’s definitely a part of it, but the line gets crossed when we stop talking about the series and start talking about how we’re talking to each other. We don’t actually discuss Star Trek so much as point out different ways we could have communicated to one another.

I am just not going to comment and interact with Stamets, because I acknowledge the passion, and agree it’s great, but you can have passion and still know how to communicate with people without being seemingly hostile. When you call somebody “utterly wrong” they’re going to be upset, even if you just meant “I vehemently disagree with you” there’s simply more diplomatic ways to get your point across.

I think we would probably get along better if we heard each other vocally. I know a lot of people who I disagree with when we’re typing but they come off totally different when they’re speaking because you can hear the tone.

If somebody can’t moderate their instance in any kind of way that’s impacting other parts of the federation, it makes sense to defederate until they fix their problems.

I don’t think anybody should have open signups. It’s literally just an invitation to mess with the rest of us who are federated with the instance.

Microsoft Pitched OpenAI’s DALL-E as Battlefield Tool for U.S. Military (theintercept.com)

Microsoft last year proposed using OpenAI’s mega-popular image generation tool, DALL-E, to help the Department of Defense build software to execute military operations, according to internal presentation materials reviewed by The Intercept. The revelation comes just months after OpenAI silently ended its prohibition against...

With Stable Diffusion’s case, you would use the software to determine what targets to protect, rather than destroy, obviously.

And so begins the big titty resistance against the machines.

If the first gen’s prices go lower than they already are, I’ll buy the hell out of an A770 for video transcoding in AV1.

Intel cards are not the best performance for gaming, but they’re getting better in a lot of respects, and they are legitimately the only manufacturer targeting the midrange and low budget segment. I hope the second round of cards are significantly better while staying within the same price range. I also hope the standalone cards help them tune the Core series better. The MSI Claw is a fucking travesty.

There is a hack to get ReBar on those older machines. I have a 6700k as well and it’s running a 1050ti, but this utility I heard about allows any modern system running a UEFI to have ReBar.

He’s also the one who told the Emperor to move out of his sunlight.

Man, what a guy.

Alexander the Great comes up to you and says “if I was not me, I wish I were you” and your response is “If I wasn’t myself, I’d still wish to be myself”.

Unfathomably based.
