Inside a 250-year-old French Violin by Augustin Chappuy.

This violin was just brought to New Zealand and is about to be restored - so I thought I'd do this 'before' photo, and you can all check back in in about a year's time once it's been through the hands of Le Violon Rouge luthiers!

Photographed with a Medical Endoscope and a Lumix G9ii

Work in progress for my Architecture In Music series.

charlesbrooks,

@maslowsneeds @dermb @classicalmusic the Luthier herself could tell you better, but there is some deformation to the shape of the belly that needs to be addressed. Some of these cleats are good but many need redoing. Lots of scratches and varnish issues on the outside. Soundpost replacements, new bridge. There's a good few months of work do be done here!

A photograph of the inside of a splendid Geminhardt Elkhardt Alto Flute.
This shot is the result of combining 960 individual images. This offers an unparalleled insight into the instrument, revealing the intricate details of its craftsmanship, the delicate fibers of the pads, and the traces left by years of meticulous cleaning.

Inside the Action of a Fazioli Grand Piano. I'm always in awe of just how precise the work is in these tiny spaces; this opening is less than 2cm in diameter.
A typical Fazioli is made from more than 11'000 individual parts.

A nebula? A nightmare tunnel? Something more anatomical?

This is the inside of an Australian Didgeridoo!
Many don't realise that these instruments are naturally hollowed out by Termites.

Australian legend says that the first Didgeridoo was created when a hollow branch was pointed at the sky and blown to remove the termites. The white termites flew into the air and became the stars, to the sound of incredible music.

Carved Runes in the Dwarven Kingdom of Khazad-dûm ... are really the tiny treble pipes of a Pipe Organ at St. Marks Church in Auckland, New Zealand.

Giant suspension cables...?
In a sense yes... These are the bass strings of a Spirio R Grand Piano.
They're wound so tight that they exert more than 20 tonnes of pressure on the frame.

Part of my Architecture In Music collection, exploring the insides of extraordinary instruments.

Is it a futuristic laundromat?
Not quite - this is the interior of a Fazioli Grand Piano

The inside of a 'Hopf'
circa 1880.

Part of my Architecture in Music Series, this probably isn't a real Hopf violin (they're rather expensive and a little rare). Small details in the neck block and varnish finish give it away.

This is a focus stack of 75 images to keep it sharp from front to back, and another two images for the smoke (which is actually water vapor).

The inside of a Buffet Bass Clarinet could easily be a scene from a Kubrick film...

This is a model 1193 with a low C, a soloist instrument seen in almost every major symphony orchestra worldwide.

A few hundred shots have been stacked together in this image to keep focus clear from front to back. That, combined with the wide angle, gives this photo its sense of scale.

The inside of a modern subw... actually it's a Grand Piano! Crafted from around 11'000 individual parts you're looking at a tiny tunnel through the 'action' of the piano (the moving parts that transfer motion from the keys to the strings).

This whole space is less than 20mm in diameter. To photograph it I took 1088 individual photos at different focal lengths and blended them, a technique called focus stacking.

Inside an old Cello - The interior of a Lockey Hill cello, built around 1780. Lockey's family would go on to be the most famous instrument makers in England (Hill & Sons), however Lockey's own career was cut short when he was executed for horse theft shortly after finishing this instrument!
