The Russia bit makes me think that a right-winger actually drew this, but the first three panels are pretty on point with my social media experience. It really reminds me of 2016, where basically the democrats felt they had license to just phone it in because Trump was so despicable that they didn’t see why they should bother. He’d never actually win, right? The loop for 2024 goes:
-Someone shares a gaslighting article about how Biden actually fixed the economy/healthcare/the war in Ukraine/higher education/whatever and just nobody noticed.
-Someone else says that that doesn’t align with their experience
-OP or others come and accuse them of being a Trump supporter or otherwise dismiss their concerns (either “anecdotes don’t count” or “well, it doesn’t matter because Trump is worse” usually).
And to be clear, Biden has done a lot, at least relative to US Pol. Probably more than Obama did in his eight years. I’m a huge, huge fan of his rail revitalization efforts. But the conversations about his accomplishments and challenges aren’t being handled in the same ballpark as honest, and I’m seeing enough parallels between now and 16 that I’m starting to get uncomfortable. If the democrats try to take “we don’t have to try, Trump is not a serious electoral challenge” to the bank again, I’m going to write a book about political Darwin awards and make them the fucking headline. Jesus Christ, it’s like being driven around by someone who’s previously been hit by a train, and they look at you and go “I bet I can beat the train across the tracks.” It’s horrifying, under the circumstances.
It’s kinda funny, I imagine Idaho doesn’t want them; not least of all because it’s going to take them from looking like a melted rotated Oklahoma to looking like a middle finger emoji.
Tbh, I didn’t hear the similarity in the GPT4o demos. Not saying OpenAI did right or wrong, just that I wouldn’t have guessed that the Sky voice was meant to be ScarJo.
I love 4x games, but playing a game of Stellaris for a week or more just to realize that I’ve inescapably fucked up and lost the game is disheartening. I just don’t have the bandwidth to spend 40 hours per match. Yeah, you can make 4x games run a lot shorter, but it usually feels like you’re doing something crazy to the game.
You know what’s cheaper for everyone than buying cars? A good public transit system and safe, actually useful/enjoyable bike infrastructure. I’ve run the napkin math on this and it’s absolutely no contest.
Source: I’m a stranger on the internet and you will certainly not regret taking me at my word.
When I say good, I mean good by the rest of the world’s standards, not good by the US’ standards. I’m talking 3-5 minute peak frequencies between even medium cities (NL) or even 30 minute frequencies to small towns (I want to say the swiss even have this to small towns). I’m talking protected bike paths that don’t put your life on the line, not bike lanes that are considered good because they actually exist at all. I mean cities that have been been reformed (this one will take a while, I know) so that they’re human-centric and it would never occur to you that you need a car.
It sucks, in all likelihood, because the US has spent 70 years making policy choices that puts cars over all other considerations. I find it difficult to express to you how big that gap is; it’s something I’ve come to appreciate via exchange students. We’re so ridiculously car dependent that there’s all kinds of infra that we ought to have that just seems unreasonable from where we are now. That’s not something you can walk back overnight, but it can be done.
ITT: you’re a Trump supporter if you call genocide genocide.
There’s a lot of people who plan on voting Biden, myself included, who effectively feel held hostage at this point. “Don’t criticize support for genocide or Trump is going to destroy the country and probably kill a lot of people” is probably one of the most frustrating political discourses I’ve ever experienced. The folks making this argument are right in that Trump winning is bad for everyone, including the Palestinians, and I can empathize with the pragmatism there. That said, that argument rings hollowly for me, because it comes across as so utterly cynical. It reads (to me) as though genocide registers at the same level of urgency as dysfunction at the DMV. They’re sorry for the inconvenience (and probably they really are sorry that it’s happening) but non-combatants getting starved, shot, drone striked, and buried under rubble by our allies is just not something that’s convenient to deal with right now. I wonder if they think the Palestinians find it very convenient.
Is it a straw man, though? Just look at the post we’re in. OP, at face value, wants the democrats to win but thinks they’re bungling the odds by supporting genocide. There’s already multiple commenters accusing them of being Trump supporters, as well as at least one commenter I’ve seen so far suggesting that we can’t be critical about this now because the election is too important.
It’s just high, high volume. You swing at every pitch and you’re statistically bound to eventually hit some home runs. The CIA is always up to some shit.
Yes, this is accurate. Trump, however, showed us that you could just ignore the law and make your own rules with blackjack and hookers, and the worst thing that’ll happen is some stern finger wagging. If there was ever a time to do that, stopping a genocide is it.
I wonder about the assertion that these are WFHers and not a bunch of useless middle management and above types with nothing better to be doing.
Plus, BS jobs aren’t a new phenomenon. There’s no shortage of people whose jobs comprise maybe 2 hours of actual work a day, and the other 30 hours are basically just done for looks/tradition. WFH allows everyone to give the 40 hr desk-sitting tradition a five finger salute and everyone’s happy; the work gets done, and the worker doesn’t have to spend 3/4 of their time twiddling their thumbs. Plus, the business doesn’t need as large of an office.
So, he feels that the Nazi gangs in East Ukraine were engaging in ethnic cleansing against Russian speakers / Russian nationals that was more or less state sanctioned by the state showing they weren’t interested in doing anything about it. He fully believes Russia’s stated purpose in all this is to seize control of East Ukraine in order to stop the Nazis.
Imo, there’s clear enough evidence that there’s a Nazi problem in Ukraine. What isn’t clear to me is why that’s a reason for Russia to expand its territory (spoiler alert: it’s an excuse, obviously. Russia also has a Nazi problem, like a lot of other countries. The northern hemisphere is working through some shit ATM.)
