fun fact: software piracy is not a crime, cracking drm solutions isnt either (though it can facilitate the latter so its still considered “conspiring to”), nor is making unofficial copies of games, only redistributing those unofficial copies without a licensing agreement permitting as much is illegal

still not a crime however as copyright is part of civil law, it gives someone the right to sue for damages but they have to do so themselves and out of their own pocket. thats why most actual anti-piracy measures are entirely outside the legal system

(besides drm and propaganda theres of course just contacting your internet provider asking them to send threatening letters, throttle your connection or even disconnect service entirely)

they should make wine but for running solaris executibles on openbsd, i think that would be funny.

    @chjara thats what c programmers mean when they say memory management bugs are a skill issue

    but then they just keep introducing memory management bugs

    coolbean,
    @coolbean@seafoam.space avatar

    @chjara thing is you can check for a lot of these issues even within the bounds of c, no additional tools needed

    but somehow only very few implementations actually do that (notably openbsd, where the malloc implementation itself tries to find use-after-frees, double frees, writes within allocated space but not the requested size)

    and its just… confusing why this isnt a common thing

    coolbean,
    @coolbean@seafoam.space avatar

    @chjara tldr: im convinced c developers have some weird macho complex where they are intentionally making it hard to detect memory management bugs before they become a cve

    coolbean,
    @coolbean@seafoam.space avatar

    @chjara i dont know, i dont do that low level crap, but the guy that implemented it gave a talk about it at eurobsdcon last year so that is probably a better source than i could wish to be https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIjUsv91rXg

    instead of an RFC, I would write an RFQ (request for questions) with the hope that most of the questions will be "oh god astrid why"

    @dangerdyke @astrid like i cant even call it a forced romantic subplot, its actually very relevant to the main story, but it just feels completely forced and unnatural

    with credit card companies forcing yet another service to forbid “adult content”, and crypto finally mostly in the dumps

    gnu taler? please? lets not overthink it with blockchains, lets not try to game the system, lets just take decentralised electronic payment and not fuck it up

    coolbean,
    @coolbean@seafoam.space avatar

    taxable with very limited legal or ethical concerns, mostly efficient since it doesnt use blockchains, doesnt rely on existing credit card infrastructure

    and most importantly its digital so its ideal for online transactions, but can also be used in person via mobile phones ala google pay

    but again, not controlled by google, not blockchain, customer side is totally anonymised, seller side is not so no ethical concerns regarding illicit shit, that needs to get laundered the old fashioned way

    coolbean,
    @coolbean@seafoam.space avatar

    like seriously please give me online payment thats not reliant on credit card companies or inefficient crypto shit

    coolbean,
    @coolbean@seafoam.space avatar

    @root a. capitalism, corpos dont profit from this b. its gnu, they fucking suuuck at making themselves appear likable enough for people to hear them out, they inherently dont do marketing
