crackajack,

Stanley Kubrick never really had an original screenplay. His movies are based from an already existing story. He reasoned that itโ€™s better to adapt a story that is good but not considered classic, because it means there is plenty to improve from such story.

I see youโ€™re emulating Kubrickโ€™s idea ๐Ÿ˜‚

crackajack,

I like how unnecessarily bureaucratic this is in terms of immigration.

crackajack,

Iโ€™m a person of colour and left leaning, but I find that there is ironic racism from the liberals and the left, as exemplified by this post. I appreciate that many thinkers including Slavoj Zizek call them out on this. There is the idea that persons of colour and minorities are perpetually helpless who need uplifting by privileged white people. Which in effect condescends and stereotype PoCs and thereby exotocising them. It denies the humanity and agency of PoCs to be an individual human who are just as flawed as any of us. This is the modern-day version of โ€œwhite manโ€™s burdenโ€.

crackajack,

The early 00s was pretty mysoginistic.

I originally came from a conservative country, and yet there were plenty of ads for softcore porns in TVs and billboards in those days. Even as a child, I questioned why do they show such images in front of full view to everyone.

The thing is, such mysoginy was the norm without us even realising it. I remember reading an article of a woman reminiscing her college days in early 00s. There were pictures of college girls on pin up boards and they get graded on how beautiful they are. The author said no one thought bad about it but looking back, it was very degrading and also invading privacy. There was also the matter of the infamous wardrobe malfunction of Janet Jackson. She got all the public spotlight afterwards because she is a woman, but Justin Timberlake pretty much got away with it for free. JT also shamed Britney Spears about losing her virginity to him, instead of keeping his mouth shut, while Britney was branded as slut.

More than 100,000 protest across Germany over far-right AfDโ€™s mass deportation meetings (www.theguardian.com)

More than 100,000 people turned out across Germany on Saturday in protest against the far-right Alternative fรผr Deutschland (AfD) party, which sparked an outcry after it emerged that the partyโ€™s members discussed mass deportation plans at a meeting of extremists....

crackajack,

If you read the article, the deportation plan touches on those who are already German citizens by essentially paying them to โ€œremigrateโ€. Remigration is often a right wing dog whistle.

crackajack,

I am reading a book on supporting universal basic income, and it provided all examples of the times when the homeless were provided unconditional income and a home. Every cities in the world that did this have been successful in eliminating homelessness.

This is not a Finnish model, itโ€™s common sense.

crackajack,

Do you know who else got lenient punishment despite attempting a coupโ€ฆ

crackajack,

I am surprised they even passed that law. For Floridian standards, this is good and the bar isnโ€™t even high ๐Ÿ˜‚

Thanks to YouTube forcing users to turn on their watching history or else their front page will be empty, I turned off mine for good and have been able to catch up on my backlog.

Many of your probably know that motive of YouTube forcing users to turn on their watch history-- which is trying to get as much eyeball attention from you as possible for more data generation personally about you and send them to advertisers....

crackajack,

At least Iceland ousted their government at the time after the revelation. Which is why it is up to the collective people to mobilise. A government is only in place so long as the population allows them to. โ€œPeople get the government they deserve.โ€ After all, there are only thousands of politicians compared to the millions of ordinary citizens.

There are ethical billionaires, but nobody would have heard of them because they do not advertise and show off how much of a good person they are for donating. A good person do not look for validation. Charles Feeney comes to mind who donated 90% of his wealth and died with net worth of $1 million. He also lived in a rented apartment despite having become a billionaire for managing Duty Free.

Edit: okay some have been pedantic on here about Charles Feeney and his wealth, and some of my figures have been wrong, but the overall point still stands. He was worth $8 billion, donated over 99% of his wealth and spent the rest of his remaining days with $2 million.

Iโ€™ve been meaning to say this, there has been surge of influx of users recently. Maybe this has to do with it? My VPN IP has been targeted. This isnโ€™t a problem if you switch to a different location as certain VPN IP addresses are flagged by websites. VPN providers tend to change the addresses so this shouldnโ€™t be a long term problem.

Since the debacle of Reddit and curtailing of privacy in their site, I log in to Reddit via Tor on Onion. Itโ€™s awkward to do so, but I wonโ€™t go back to the original site. They have gone in the way of Facebook with predatory harvesting of data.

crackajack,

You can be angry without being rude. Iโ€™d much prefer passive aggressiveness than egregious blame-shifting and accusations.

crackajack,

Anyone who worked in both private and public would know both are not more efficient than the other.

Public services are chronically underfunded because of corruption. Private companies perform rabbit in a hat trick by making you guess what undisclosed ingredients they put in your food if theyโ€™re not regulated, just so to save cost and make money for themselves!

crackajack,

I think thatโ€™s what they mean that โ€œyou become conservative as you grow olderโ€. To me, doing so means you succumbed to the system.

crackajack,

Thatโ€™s why even if Russia wins the war or got some concessions, it will be a Pyrrhic victory. Theyโ€™re already experiencing population decline because of massive emigration aside from lower birth rate (which is why Putin is paying lip service to the conservative religious Russians to promote more birth, and in turn endeared him to conservatives across the world). The war will add to the burden of the Russian people on top of corruption and debt after the conflict.

crackajack,

Yes. Israel had been sniping and bombing civilians alike all this time but no one batted an eye. But when Hamas conducted their own terrorist acts everyone lost their minds!

crackajack,

I met an Argentinian, and she is still upset about the Falklands. It made an impression on me that Argentines are still not over it. Donโ€™t get me wrong, she is a nice lady, but Iโ€™m guessing that nationalism is Argentinaโ€™s past time instead of fixing their own more critical domestic issues. Tribalism is a time tested tool used to distract and manipulate people, anyhow.

crackajack,

The Nazis were inspired by New World colonialist, racists policies. Even Hitler admit he was inspired by the eugenics movement from the US.

crackajack,

Odd that the people who question vaccines are the same people who donโ€™t question the medicines they put into their mouths when they get sick. Do they know that vaccines and medicines are researched and manufactured in a similar way?

crackajack,

โ€œa lot of Western armor doesnโ€™t work here because it had been created not for an all-out war but for conflicts of low or medium intensity.โ€

Interesting, I wonder which vehicles are they talking about. There are different types of vehicles. Heavier armors, of course, could sustain high intensity conflicts.

Anyhow, glad to see Russian sock puppets on this thread, with not an ounce or iota of knowledge of warfare, simping for Putin again. As people already pointed out, many of these Western vehicles are designed with combined arms working in tandem with air support, artillery and infantry in mind. But Ukraine has no air support because they lack these expensive and more sophisticated airplanes. Despite the limitations of Ukraine, Russia should still realise that Ukraine is the one making more advances than them in the past 18 months since the conflict started. One could argue that, if we are talking about which has the lesser effective and flimsier war machines, it looks like Russia has more of them.

crackajack,

Never pirate from indie developers. But for giant companies, pirating is a drop in the bucket for their revenue.

crackajack, (edited )

That much is obvious. And for us commuters of public transport, it is such a relief to notice the traffic is not as bad and heavy as they used to be pre-pandemic, due to people now working from home.

With many businesses now wanting workers to return working on site, I think this shows the true colours of capital-owning class in relation to climate-change. Despite all the shifting of responsibility to make consumers monitor carbon-footprint, and corporate marketing of supposedly environmentally-friendly products, if CEOs and billionaires truly care about the environment, they would not even demand workers to return working on-site 5 days a week. Green-washing indeed.

Edit:clarity

crackajack,

The questioning is stupid. There is no nuance on the categorisation of frequency because โ€œalwaysโ€ and โ€œsometimesโ€ are put together. They do not mean the same thing! โ€œAlwaysโ€ means โ€œall the timeโ€, โ€œsometimesโ€ means โ€œon occasionsโ€. I am an advocate for free speech as much as the next person, but there is limit to that right because history has shown what can happen if free speech is absolute-- which led us the Holocaust and the Rwandan genocide. Therefore, โ€œsometimesโ€ you COULD shout down someone depending on the content being spouted. So, on a case by case basis, โ€œon occasionsโ€ you could shout down someone.

As another poster pointed out, the company who made the survey is conducted by conservative group, FIRE, which is Koch-funded so obviously there is clear bias and dishonesty in the framing of the survey.
