fyi someone else launched one a day ago; please see my suggestions to them in their ‘how the bot works’ thread in tldrbot@lemmy.world.

tldr: i am really not a fan of automated posting of automated plausibly-not-BS-but-actually-BS, which is what LLMs tend to produce, but I realize some people are. if you really want to try it, please make it very clear to every reader that it is machine-generated before they read the rest of the comment.

!lemmy_support is the place for support questions

cypherpunks,
@cypherpunks@lemmy.ml avatar

you can see what instances your instance vlemmy.net federated with at vlemmy.net/instances and yes diggit.xyz is currently there. you can find some of their communities here or paste a specific community URL from diggit.xyz/communities in your instance’s search box to cause it to federate if it isn’t yet.

i’m deleting this post now; if you have more support questions please use !lemmy_support

Two suggestions:

  1. you should change the “tl;dr” heading to say “tl;dr (machine-generated)” to avoid wasting people’s time who know they don’t want to read LLM-generated summaries.
  2. you should make the suggestions link be a relative link, like this: [Suggestions?](/c/tldrbot@lemmy.world) so that it works for users on other instances too.

Tbh I would still lean toward banning this bot even if you take the above suggestions, because LLM-generated texts are often subtly wrong and basically worse than useless imo (eg, often actually harmful).

But making it more clearly labeled as being what it is would be an improvement.

I’m on the admin team at lemmy.ml and have banned a few people posting totally-not-labeled but obviously-LLM-generated comments lately, and I’m getting pretty tired of this automated bullshit tech. But since yours is at least somewhat labeled, and hopefully better labeled soon if you take my suggestions above, I won’t ban this one without discussing with other admins first.

it’s disappointing seeing so many people here excited about something that is not (and apparently not planning to be) free open source software :(

please use lemmy_support for support, not asklemmy.

there are several github issues discussing the possibility of combining communities across instances, and/or creating ‘multireddit’ style views:

this comment reads suspiciously like it was written by an LLM (eg ChatGPT). was it? please don't do that!

Do LLMs give citations?

do they ever!

(The citations in this comment appear to be all real links about NixOS, but they are not particularly relevant to the places in the comment where they're cited.)

thanks for clarifying. i'm deleting your generated comment per rule 4 (spamming) as well as two other generated comments you posted elsewhere; if another admin wants to undelete any of these i would be surprised.

please do not post LLM-generated comments without clearly labeling them as such. imo this is common sense, and doesn't need its own rule, rule 4 is sufficient.

correct, beehaw and sh.itjust.works users can both read and post to communities on lemmy.ml, but they can't see eachother's posts or comments (because the beehaw admins defederated from sh.itjust.works).

btw, I (as an admin at lemmy.ml) am deleting this post from asklemmy because it is a lemmy support question.

note that when a user pastes an image on lemmy, it gets hosted on the user's home instance - not to the home instance of the community where they pasted it.

hi, since the mod of this community is absent i'm going use the 'speak as mod' admin button here and say... theduran looks like a really lousy source (many of their stories violate lemmy rule #1) so I'm going to delete this post. i'm sure you can find this story being reported elsewhere; feel free to resubmit it.

Is Lemmy right for me?

I'm looking to create a space for a small subreddit that I moderate that has maybe a couple hundred active users at most. I feel like the documentation provided here leaves a lot up to assuming the reader has prior knowledge of hosting a web service. I don't have any such prior knowledge so I'm hoping I can ask here. Please bear...

hi, fyi i deleted the comment you replied to here because it was generated by an LLM. after seeing your reply, i considered undeleting it, but, after actually reading the whole comment I see (as expected) it is a useless mix of semi-accurate and inaccurate information. (if you want to re-read it, you can click 'modlog' on the sidebar - it will remain there for a couple days).

i'm removing this; please use !test and/or test instances like voyager.lemmy.ml for testing.

nutomic says here that it is users who have made at least one post or comment in that time period.

@cypherpunks@lemmy.ml avatar

As a new member of the lemmy.ml admin team I've also been removing a lot of posts from here which belong in lemmy_support, which I think is worthwhile for preventing this community from becoming a boring list of support questions.

To the many people who are flagging them: please read the examples above and don't flag every post that is about lemmy; only flag ones that are actually concrete support questions. And do feel free to actually answer these questions before flagging them, so that the person asking doesn't necessarily need to re-post it.

Thanks!
