The entire economy is affected by student loan debt. Property sector is hurt inasmuch as most people with student loan debt simply cannot afford to buy a home. The banking sector is impacted as debt-ridden students cannot qualify for mortgages or other loans. Businesses also hurt when the consumer market contracts. Higher education becomes increasingly inaccessible to many due to the ever-rising tuition fees at universities, which take advantage of the federal loan program.

Are your clothes making you sick? The opaque world of chemicals in fashion (www.theguardian.com)

Some of the chemicals scientists have found in garments – such as tributyl phosphate, dimethyl fumarate, and disperse dyes – can be acutely toxic or hazardous, causing skin reactions or asthma. Others have been proven, outside of their use on clothing, to have links to cancer, reproductive toxicity, allergies, and skin...

The reporter alleges that Russia has taken some 9000 children and it would seem that at least some of them have been undergoing Russian military training. While involuntary rounding up of Ukrainian children and deporting them to Russia or Russian occupied territories constitutes a war crime, let’s not forget that the USA, bastion of human liberty and rights, separated more than 5500 children from their parents at the border, beginning in 2017 through the period of the Trump administration. Families endured separation for years. As of 2022 some 545 children had not yet been reunited with their parents, and of that number, the whereabouts of 362 could no longer be traced. Children and families do not matter to fascists.

EXTRACT The NCERT has dropped a chapter titled Periodic Classification Of Elements from 2023’s Class 10 science textbook for 15- to 16-year-olds. However, the Class 11 chemistry textbook still has a chapter titled Classification Of Elements And Periodicity In Properties that traces the history of the development of the periodic table of elements.

Passages on Darwin’s theory of evolution and sustainable management of natural resources have also been excised from Classes 9 and 10 study material. Evolution remains in the Class 12 textbook.

The changes affect some 134 million children between 11 and 18 years old in Indian schools.

An Alternative Cure: The Adoption and Survival of Bacteriophage Therapy in the USSR, 1922–1955 (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)

While the viral nature of the “phage” was only widely accepted in the 1940s, attempts to use the phenomenon in treating infections started early. After raising hopes in the interwar years, by 1945 phage therapy had been abandoned almost entirely in the West, until the recent revival of interest in response to the crisis of...

Are there any Reddit refugees spending more time on Lemmy than Reddit?

I am theoretically switching over from Reddit to Lemmy. Finding myself spending more time on Lemmy than on Reddit. Maybe it's because I am limited to using the desktop and can't aimlessly browse Reddit on my iPhone. Of late, the only subreddits I cared for were on sports and their matchday threads and r/watches. I found myself...

Me too. I used to spend hours on Reddit. Joined back in the day when Digg users migrated to Reddit. I do miss some of the subs, but I've also become bored with so much of the recycling. Lemmy and Kbin are relatively new, but I welcome the open source concept behind federation, and here's an opportunity to invest in creating and being part of communities that own their contributions.

China isn't gunning for the Philippines. It's got Taiwan in its sights. Understandably, Philippines is nervous about China squatting just beyond Philippine waters, but it ought to be even more nervous about its security in the event of open hostilities between the US and China over Taiwan.

'The deputy president of the P-Hailing Organisation of Malaysia estimates 20 per cent of the 403,637 post-SPM examination students to enter the food delivery industry, known locally as p-hailing, as riders this year due to job and financial constraints.

'…The newspaper previously reported on June 1 that more than 458,000 SPM graduates are estimated not to further their studies in the next three years.

‘It cited statistics from an unnamed source showing that 48.74 per cent or 180,680 SPM graduates in 2021, an increase from the 35.16 per cent, or 115,939 SPM graduates in 2020, stopped their education after taking the final secondary school examination in Form Five.’

With these numbers the gig industry will be saturated … but maybe high attrition rate amongst gig workers?
