In "Freddy is Dead", Krueger plays with a videogame using his glove. The producer, Robert Shay, wanted to use a real Power Glove but Nintendo said no.
Unfazed, the producer pushed for Freddy to use the "playing with power" line anyway. Nintendo, strangely, didn't sue.

The Wizardry remake by Digital Eclipse asks a serious question: is it all about historical importance or, rather, how much you would want to play a 44 year old game today?

@ThreeOhFour sure even though I would think you would appreciate the pure experience or one of the other ways of playing it. I mean I like the idea, I'm just not sure I would recommend someone spend 35€ on it, it costs more than Hades 2...

Finally, tonight I am starting my playthrough of one of my favorite Sierra games ever: Quest for Glory - Shadows of Darkness. It is going to be a long road but one that I can't wait to travel.
Join me at 9.30 PM CET for some questing and glorying on Twitch https://www.twitch.tv/thegenesistemple or Youtube https://www.youtube.com/@thegenesistemple

I just argued with someone on FB because they did not agree that time and money transformed most gaming companies into uncreative money grabbing zombies, since "Naughty Dog in the last years has released many award-winning games" and that "crunch was also a thing in the 90s".
Okay, I guess.

damianogerli,
@damianogerli@mastodon.social avatar

@Blackthorn yeah and also Naughty Dog did crunch back in the 90s sure, but they did because they were making games they wanted to play themselves, not (just) because some publishers wanted to make money.

A DDOS against the Internet Archive has commenced again, timed for maximum pain for the California staff to deal with. (I don't sleep, but I also can't do anything on the infrastructure here.)

So, we're down until people wake up to deal with the constant DOOS against us because... reasons

On Patreon I published a history of Capstone, the infamous 90s developer who developed such games as TekWar and Witchhaven.
Why were those games "not good"? The developers told me a story of rushed dev times and a toxic environment.
I'd really appreciate some support in those tough times. 😟 Thanks.

What are some of the hidden gems of the Game Boy Advance and why haven't I played them?
Well time to do it, revisiting both Broken Sword and such smaller classics as Urban Yeti and Rhythm Tengoku. In 30 minutes my variety stream is on.

One more which came out of nowhere for me.

Years ago I played a random medieval game on GamePass just because it had a weekly point bonus. It was something that never would have caught my eye otherwise and I went it thinking it would be some awful low budged drek.

What I didn't expect was how funny it ended up being.

Soon I forgot the name, but the humour stuck with me.
Just found it it was The Bard's Tale by Inxile!
So I had to grab it on PS4.
Wonder where 2 and 3 are...

@OutofPrintArchive too bad the gameplay was awful

Tonight I'm going to continue my Phantasmagoria play through but of course, I wouldn't feel complete if I did not discover this mature and real funny excretial easter egg.
See you at 9.30 PM (CET) on https://www.twitch.tv/thegenesistemple

Italian streamer remains pretty much speechless in front of the "diarrhea" Phantasmagoria easter egg where a woman is apparently shitting herself in the bathroom (not seen)

What are some noteworthy videogames with zero chance of ever seeing a commercial re-release?

(Whether because of obscurity, rights issues, legal entanglements, or any other reason.)

damianogerli,
@damianogerli@mastodon.social avatar

@retrohistories Eric Chahi's Le Pacte is a good one, it was his adventure game right before Another World. Despite the author's notoriety, that game remains in French only and only released on CPC. So... yeah. But I did play it on Twitch recently and it was pretty interesting.

Armed & Delirious (aka Dementia) is also a pretty good example in that it is a ... uh unique adventure game but it would be almost impossible to re-release it today.

damianogerli,
@damianogerli@mastodon.social avatar

@HauntedOwlbear @retrohistories that's one I haven't played from her (I mean, several of her games can't really be played on Twitch, already risked the ban a couple of times...)

Yesterday someone asked me "are you a cool and fun streamer?" I said the truth, which is no of course, but I then explained I was a "fun cool streamer" instead, which is a great Italian trick to insult someone and not be found out.

Italian streamer explains "fun cool" while playing Phantasmagoria and trying (very hard) to go through a trapdoor
