Busily spending part of my weekend enjoying one aspect of my job at the Archive - sorting through uploads of a certain type - in this case, anything calling itself a "Manual". There are hundreds of people uploading a single manual for the most obscure of things, and the style and breadth is amazing.

@cognitivegears Combination of outreach to potential sources of items to upload, sifting through the stacks for spam and materials to move to collections, digitizing various items to upload to the archive, lots of fun phone calls

Internet Archive Canada, Vancouver HQ, is a great place to have events, and it now does on the regular.

I sometimes keep spam that's compelling (not on the archive, but personally) and this lawyer spam from India, I gotta say - here's a solid set of portrait shots.

@http_error_418 Normally I giggle at you "I HAVE to mention the trigger discipline" folks, but in this case, the movie CIVIL WAR (2024), I think that untrained recklessness and the menace of the scene with this character is intentional.

Me when people tell me it's "impossible to find anything on the archive"

@finagle That's when there's no archive to find things!

Boy, don't sleep on this absolutely charming Tandy/Radio Shack MC-10 programs James Gerrie is uploading in emulation-in-browser ready shape. So cuuuute. So quaint. Such honest homebrew computing.

OK, the big experiment has begun. A ham radio group has funded the scanning of 4,000 manuals from the Great Manuals Plus Haul. Now, the experiment is - will people kick on a special link in the blog entry to help fund the other 20 PALLETS of manuals?

https://blog.archive.org/2024/04/24/a-happy-ending-for-some-manual-labor-and-a-call-for-support/

textfiles,
@textfiles@mastodon.archive.org avatar

People always say to me "When will you scan ______?" and the answer is it costs money. This is a chance to see if people will throw money at a specific project to help fund the costs.

The nice part is that you can already visit the 4,000 scanned manuals already!

textfiles,
@textfiles@mastodon.archive.org avatar

@VE2UWY they are definitely going to cover scanning more manuals, but they can really only scan radio related manuals and these manuals are a whole range of testing and electronic equipment. So more people from more sources are needed.

textfiles,
@textfiles@mastodon.archive.org avatar

@lewiscowles1986 I intend to keep people updated and how the fundraising is going. Nothing is going to be thrown out.

@piggo it does.

Today's mild side-quest while I'm cleaning my apartment is working with my discovery people were uploading not just a few flash items, but thousands of flash items on the archive and clearly not able to figure out how to make them emulate in browser. I'm fixing that now, so apparently we're going to get as many as 3,000 flash animations/games running at the site this weekened.

textfiles,
@textfiles@mastodon.archive.org avatar

First part done: We now have a "Flash Compilations" collection where someone uploads piles of .SWF files into an item (we can't do much with multiple SWF files at once) and so they're great for finding SWF materials to use:

This meme is making the rounds. Naturally people are going "this isn't real". Well, I can't attest how much Musk was inspired by the original, but Internet Archive lets you play the PC and Apple versions in browser:
