Nooooooooooo I got jury duty summons for 3 days after I get back from Japan :spyfam_anya_panic:

Can I just, like, share my social media with them ahead of time so they know I'm horribly opinionated and a terrible juror?

dean,

@neatchee "I watched that CGPGrey video about jury nullification and thought it had some really good points"

discord has apparently been training an ML model to predict people's age and gender

dean,
@dean@urusai.social avatar

@neatchee i was in this camp at one point in my life, but it's so defeatist. there are alternatives to software that collect data. it's (part of) why we're on mastodon, is it not? another pov is i'd rather the companies spend millions to billions of dollars on data collection techniques to make a 5% return than the companies get the millions of dollars back for free.

we already saw facebook crying at apple for having users opt-in to cross-app identity services. i'd like to see more of that

dean,
@dean@urusai.social avatar

@neatchee the issue is that they're unfortunately one in the same. as soon as there's a centralized identity service, there is a "what are this person's preferences" service

there have actually been efforts to make an identity service without enabling data collection, see Cloudflare Privacy Pass and Chrome Web Environment Integrity. but people tend not to like them because they don't prevent data collection well enough.

Our boss doesn't want any loading in our pages, so we just took out the loading screens and skeletons. Hope this makes him shut up about it.

dean,
@dean@urusai.social avatar

@dopey_kun a trick I saw recently was to only show them after a while. makes the interaction feel a lot smoother as long as interaction latency is relatively low

Sousou no Frieren drinking game:

Take a drink every time the party refers to Heiter as ‘corrupt priest’

Take two drinks every time Heiter drinks

Take three drinks every time Frieren stares expressionless into the middle distance

@bluecaller send a list to @neatchee and I'm sure he'd love to add some :tomo_MimimiSmile:

looks like not only did modern theme get fixed for the new mastodon update, but the unbearable performance issues on Android Firefox have been fixed!! Might go back to using the mastodon PWA now :spyfam_anya_happy:

Anyone have recommendations for an open source, no-code website and blog builder (not WordPress... please...)? My partner is currently using Wix, and would like to make a switch. Open source is not required, but no-code is.

Just from some quick Googling I found Ghost, which looks really good and is open source! But I'd like to find some more options if possible just to compare.

man I saw a post this morning saying something like "happy leap day, post screenshots of software breaking" and I was thinking in my head, "no way that any modern software breaks on leap day anymore"

of course it's EA of all companies

how can every book on the shelf be a #1 new york times best seller

dean,
@dean@urusai.social avatar

@anianimalsmoe at least amazon tells you the category, like "number 1 in hammers with laser pointers on them"

Wondering if I should do Advent of Code this year, considering I'm already super late.

Maybe this can be my excuse to use Rust again.

dean,
@dean@urusai.social avatar

@dopey_kun I've been meaning to learn Haskell. maybe it's time

dean,
@dean@urusai.social avatar

@dopey_kun Zig is another one too. I really enjoyed Rust's powerful type system, so I'm kinda excited to learn more languages that also have powerful type systems

Hi, I'm stuck waiting on laundry to finish and am bored, so why don't I come on here and write some hot takes about YouTube?

I mean, I can think of several reasons, but too bad I'll do it anyway.

Knowing the leanings of the folks on this particular platform this is likely to spark some debate, but note that I'm not trying to paint YouTube as a saint - in fact, the first thing I want to talk about is a strategy they've taken which puts me and all YT creators in a weird place:

dean,
@dean@urusai.social avatar

@TechConnectify I had read a long time ago that YT premium fees are split up as follows, I'm not sure if it's still true (or ever was)

  1. 50% goes to Google
  2. 50% gets put in a pool that is split up (approximately) by total platform views (ie, not just "YouTube premium viewers" or "who you've viewed", it's supposedly split by total platform views)

honestly one of the main reasons I'd love something like quote-boost for mastodon is so I can boost with content warning

why doesn't android have the concept of a "default photos app" that's used for the photo selector

dean,
@dean@urusai.social avatar

imagine the capabilities of that.

  1. cloud photos apps would work no problem. you don't need your photos on your device at all to view them
  2. you like gifs? if your photos app supports it, it could have a gif searcher.
  3. privacy is now through the roof

Alright, I enabled making my posts publicly indexable (cool!). I'll try to remember to make replies unlisted since it's kinda dumb that my replies to non-indexed posts are still indexed.

Is this available in glitch-soc/apps?

Here's a new upcoming feature coming to urusai (and maybe glitch-soc as a whole?)

Once it's merged in, you can enable it in "App Settings > Mention booster when replying to a boosted post" :EruSmile:
