My experience with friendly transit. Read my latest article right now:

@reece This is absolutely true. It's so great when transit is a first-class option.

I just left Japan today and I'm going to miss those trains so much. ๐Ÿ˜ญ

It's fascinating how many times I've recieved almost this exact same comment

In order to write this, you need to fail at so many levels:

  1. not understand an obvious joke in a satirical video
  2. believe that I could miss "3.6L V6" literally WRITTEN ACROSS THE ENGINE in that scene
  3. believe that this is purposeful deception on my part
  4. not read the other hundred comments saying exactly the same thing

I guess some people's burning desire to "Well, ackshually" overrides all common sense. ๐Ÿคฆ

This is a nice touch on the Taipei Airport Metro. Wireless charging!

notjustbikes,
@notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

@cody those USB-A sockets charge so slowly anyway. It's annoying that so many trains and buses are being built with these USB ports while the world is moving to USB-PD over USB-C.

As for security issues, that's why I used to travel with a charge-only cable (with no data lines at all). They also sell USB condoms, but I have no idea if that's technically possible with USB-PD.

notjustbikes,
@notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

@czhang03 @cody yes, I know. And it's even worse if you leave the case on.

It will still charge faster than USB-A 5V @ 2A (or less!) that is typical on transit.

notjustbikes,
@notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

@implicitdeny That is what I suspect, too.

But you might be able to build some kind of USB-PD relay that would allow PD negotiations but no other data transfer, though I suspect it would be expensive.

notjustbikes,
@notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

@thibaultmol I believe that's what the "circle" of dots is around the words "Charging Area", because that's where it charged my phone.

notjustbikes,
@notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

@krt3k yeah, I know they exist. I own lots of them! ๐Ÿ˜

But the trickier part is re-negotiating USB-PD to the phone. This isn't rocket science, and just would require a microcontroller and another USB-PD chip, but the cost would add up for a low volume commercial product.

TIL that there's been a trend towards "4x4" in Drum'n'Bass music lately. Which, uh, kinda defeats the purpose of DnB?

I dunno about you, but this just sounds to me like Happy Hardcore with a softer kick.

I mean, I'm not complaining, artists can make whatever they want, but it's funny to me that this song is on the channel "UKF Drum & Bass".

@rwtwm nah, I have regressed and pretty much only listen to trance these days.

I'm sure some others here will have some suggestions though!

I love that I can get a Shinkansen back to Tokyo at 10PM from a city with less than 100K population.

The drive would be 183 km and take 2h23m but this train will get me there in 1h10m.

It's included in my JR East train pass, too.

I can't believe I'm in Japan when the Aurora Borealis is in the Netherlands.

Good thing I've already seen them before in Yellowknife.

I am on the weirdest train yet.

I booked the HIGH RAIL train, which is billed as a stargazing train.

I thought I was getting a train where you look at the stars from the train.

But no, it's a train where you go to the station near the Nobeyama Radio Observatory, get out for 40 minutes, and try to see stars from the parking lot.

Oh, and there's a detailed guided explanation in Japanese. And a small planetarium on board.

Weird.

At least they have good beer! ๐Ÿป

I have no idea what to expect on the Pokรฉmon train tomorrow...

@notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

@jon Yeah, they'd be great if I could see anything other than glare.

I wish they would turn off the lights so that I could see something out the window!

They also run this train during the day so I guess that's what the seats are for. I'm sure the forests are lovely when it's light outside. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Tokyo has BBBase, a train designed for road cyclists to take their bikes out of the city for a ride.

It has big, comfortable seats and special racks for road bikes.

I am an old white guy with no bicycle. I'm sure everyone is wondering what the heck I'm doing on this train on an early Saturday morning. ๐Ÿ˜‚

@rmcauley yep! These are the hoops I jump through to bring you all this great content. ๐Ÿ˜‚

notjustbikes,
@notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

@rmcauley meh, I wouldn't worry about it.

It's probably better if you watch on Nebula (though downloading a video with YouTube Premium is very good, too), but I really don't think it matters all that much. Do whatever is easiest for you.

I prefer watching on Nebula, so I do that (for other creators).

@notjustbikes in my city in Spain (Oviedo), after years of doing the bare minimum, the city council is finally doing some more serious bike and pedestrian infrastructure. This one should connect some of the farthest neighbourhoods with the city center in what's essentially a straight line. Quite excited about this.

It really is wild how far the US is behind the rest of the world when it comes to public transit.

Outside of NYC, Canadian cities have significantly more per-capita transit ridership than US cities ... and transit isn't even that great in Canada.
