I was mentioning a while back that a lot of time travel shows tend to hit the big moments of history that everyone knows.

I started watching the new Quantum Leap, and it (and the original) are an exception to that. Occasionally they touch or take place near big events. But for the most part, they just tell smaller, personal stories. And that’s fantastic.

It’s really too bad it’s only streaming on Peacock.

Not going to buy every piece of equipment for my crew, I can retcon basic gear as needed. But I am figuring out what’s in their ship’s locker.

It helps that the Baronet is on the board for Faliero Arsenal Group, so I’m giving them a 10% discount on guns. Too bad that while their guns are easy to use, they are low quality and prone to dangerous mishaps.

@RogerBW good call. Already had Vacc suits and laser pistols for every one, but definitely some shotguns are good to have.

Now I need to get the Flashing Blades PDF.

And of course I want to add a dueling mini game to Traveller.

Although my current crew has exactly one character with Blades-1. 🤣

I ordered some Traveller CDs from Far Future Enterprises to flush out my PDF collection. I was highly amused by the packaging. Almost a shame I have to open it up.

All of these can be purchased on DriveThru, but you get a lot of bang for your buck buying the CD bundles.

@peterdrake that sounds like rebellion talk. 😉

Or Zhodani schemes.

New Guy on Traveller Discord: Where’s a good place to get an overview of Traveller lore?

Worst mod on server: Lore doesn’t matter.

Really guy? You not only don’t answer the question, you just dismiss it?

Here’s a good article on the different eras you can play Traveller in.

@RogerBW absolutely. I don’t think people need to become experts, but knowing the core principles of the OTU help you understand the system and how you might want to customize it.

@peterdrake she’s barely hog any useful skills, and didn’t even manage to get a ship share. But she’s on the board of directors for three corporations, so she gives the ship an array of contacts. She’s also currently in exile.

I really like T5, but it’s also dense and hard to learn and has a lot of extra parts you can ignore until you want them. I wish it had a good player’s book, they are definitely written for GMs already experienced with Traveller.

deinol,
@deinol@dice.camp avatar

So my “PCs” have enough ship shares to buy a 200 ton ship outright, but to make it interesting I’ll have them get an expanded 300 ton Far Trader, based on the Dione Class A2Lm Far Trader, from Moon Toad Publishing.

It needs two more crew. Here’s where I wish there was a T5 version of CT S13 Veterans. I appreciate having a bunch of NPC resumes to pick from, and you don’t learn the full skills until you hire them.

Decided to try some Solo Traveller. So making four characters and will see how big of a ship they can afford. I figure they can have up to 50% of their ship a loan.

Of course, they are likely to need to hire a few more for the crew, depending on ship size. One ship share (50 tons) so far.

I’ve been recommending Cepheus Deluxe as a good starting place for those new to Traveller, but a discussion on Discord is making me re-think that. I still think it’s a good starter ruleset, and it’s good at walking someone through character creation. But it doesn’t teach a new GM what to do with the game.

I still the classic Traveller Adventure is a good primer to teach GMs what a free trader campaign looks like, even if it’s too railroaded in places.

Legends: We need to consult with JRR Tolkien because of his knowledge of history and legends. Let’s find him in WWI.

Why not wait a few years and just pop in during office hours while he’s a professor? It’s not like his job history isn’t well documented.

Thinking about fleet warfare in the Traveller universe again. An admiral wants to be certain they can defeat any defenses in a system they attack. A defending fleet is all fueled up and can choose to jump away if an overwhelming force jumps in. The attacking fleet takes at least a week to refuel and jump away, so unless they can fend off the attacker and secure fuel, they are stuck.

deinol,
@deinol@dice.camp avatar

@RogerBW true, a cautious admiral jumps 1 at a time.

deinol,
@deinol@dice.camp avatar

@peterdrake the attacking fleet. The attacker uses up their jump fuel jumping into a system. Traveller ships usually only carry the fuel for one jump of max jump size. So the attacker needs to take control of a fuel source before being able to jump. Which means defeating or at least forcing away the defensive fleet.

Although if a fleet only jumps half their max range they could jump away if things go poorly. Although a full fleet might have some ships with a shorter range than others.

deinol,
@deinol@dice.camp avatar

@peterdrake yeah, that’s how it should have been. I see I should have reread my original post before submitting.

Last weekend for the Keith Frye memorial bundle.

Unfortunately, Keith recently lost his battle with cancer and left his family with a lot of debt for his care.

In an attempt to defray some of those costs, many Traveller and Cepheus publishers have banded together to present this bundle. All of the money raised by this bundle will go directly to Keith's wife, Megan, to pay those medical bills.

Guy: Don’t run an exploration game, they are deeply flawed because they don’t have recurring NPCs.

While I think it’s important to acknowledge that might be a drawback, I’ve seen plenty of groups who are more interested in solving the next puzzle than having ongoing drama with NPCs. Too often people mistake their personal preferences for universal laws.

deinol,
@deinol@dice.camp avatar

@RogerBW and exploring doesn’t mean barren rocks. You can meet people out there, you just might not see them ever again once you move on. Worked for Star Trek (DS9 excepted).
