Not to start a war, but the Shadowdark Facebook group I saw a link to a YouTube claiming Shadowdark “won” the OGL war.

First, you can never “win” open gaming. You can temporarily become dominant. If anyone has, it’s Paizo who often gets as much or more shelf space as D&D.

Second, while Shadowdark uses the 5e CC-BY SRD, but it contributes nothing to open gaming itself. It’s got a 3rd party license, and it’s fine enough, but that isn’t open gaming.

Fair, and that’s where gaming really thrives.

But I appreciate creators who allow their games to be remixed without strings attached.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I present to you American-style "Buddhism".

https://americanbuddhist.net/2024/05/16/the-jewish-plot-to-enslave-humanity/

For my friends who wonder why I'm instantly suspicious of any westerner I encounter who claims to be "Buddhist", here's why.

@deinol@dice.camp avatar

@zdl what in the holy hell garbage was that?

Although I’m willing to bet the owners of that domain are actually psycho right wingers and not actual Buddhists.

I have finished reading Chapterhouse Dune. My fools errand is finished. It’s not good, and of course ends with loose ends.

I think my personal recommendation is reading the first two books. Although just one or even zero are solid choices. Three is alright, except it’s a trap if it makes you curious and want to read more.

I’m tempted to revisit Heinlein who I haven’t read in at least twenty years, but I’m also afraid he’ll be disappointing.

@satsuma I have read the Forever War, but it’s probably time for a reread!

One of the weird premises of Dune is the notion of scientific secrets. It’s really hard to keep scientific secrets. Once you know something is possible, if you have the resources of numerous planets for centuries, you can absolutely recreate anything ever invented.

Usually the limiting factor is resources.

Okay, now that I think about it’s one of the least weird assumptions. Just a dumb one.

deinol,
@deinol@dice.camp avatar

@durrandon @SJohnRoss

But that’s just it, in the context of the Cold War there wasn’t much that either side invented that the other side couldn’t duplicate in a few years. Maybe not the exact same way, but we figured things out.

The real secrets where how many we had and where.

I have finished Heretics of Dune

I don’t really know what to make of it. On the one hand, it’s back to political maneuvering and is at least readable. But it’s still mostly about eugenics. And controlling people through sex.

I feel like you can skip God and enjoy this one, but you are still better off ending at either 1, 2, or at most 3.

The silly thing I did 25+ years ago was decide to paint each individual harlequin in different colors. No uniform army, each gets to be unique.

So I’ve got 5-10 models I need to paint, and I could use color scheme suggestions. Bright, queer, fabulous, delightful colors.

What should I paint?

I think the decline of the GURPS toolkit book is tied to RPGs drifting away from fiction and back towards tabletop games.

Someone raised on boardgames and 5e isn't going to respond well to the idea that a book (that looks like shit) for a game they don't play is going to be mire useful and inspiring than a branded plug-and-play supplement.

deinol,
@deinol@dice.camp avatar

@zozo @Taskerland

2006 was the last year GURPS was a top selling rpg. That’s two years before d&d 4e and 4 years before apocalypse world.

There was about a decade where 80% of SJ Games revenue was Munchkin.

GURPS died a long time ago because it never evolved. It’s exactly what’s it’s always been, and that still works for some people, but the industry has evolved and grown and there’s a lot more options and play styles now.

I say this as an avid collector of GURPS books.

deinol,
@deinol@dice.camp avatar

@Taskerland @cynical13 @zozo

SJ Games does a nice Stakeholder Report for the last 20 years of operation.

If you read them all from the beginning you get a good picture of how GURPS looked from the company’s standpoint.

2003 it was still their top selling line. 4e was released a year later.

At some point sales on GURPS tanked (~2006 is probably its last peak) and Munchkin dominated everything for nearly a decade.

deinol,
@deinol@dice.camp avatar

@cynical13 @Taskerland @zozo

Looking back at the numbers, from 2007 to 2013, Munchkin was 75% of their sales. After that they stop reporting the munchkin percentage.

Key change was the 2012 Ogre KS. This allowed them to start doing non-munchkin games in a low risk way, leading to reprints of Fantasy Trip, Car Wars, and a bunch of 80s box games.

I do love that most of the 3e GURPS books are now POD. I need to fill some holes in my collection.

In the end, SJ follows the money.

I have finished reading God Emperor of Dune. It ended exactly as it must, but I’m still not certain what to think of it. So far it’s my least favorite book, mostly because of the homophobia.

My recommendation is to probably stop at book 2 or 3.

But I shall forge ahead anyway.

I’m most of the way through Midnight Tides, but I have two lingering questions from House of Chains.

First, does the random Forkrul Assail that Karsa Orlong freed ever show up again?

Second, who is the random (immortal?) guy in a tower Karsa Orlong met and does he become important?

There are sometimes threads in this epic that are abandoned, and other times ones that are long dormant.

A third of the way into God Emperor of Dune. Now his sexism and homophobia is showing. I know there’s subtext along the way before this, but it’s really blatant in Moneo’s conversation with Idaho about why Leto keeps an all women army.

I have finished reading Children of Dune. I definitely appreciated it more as an adult.

I’m still digesting it, but feel like the important message is that unless we stop destroying our environment and begin thinking in terms of multiple generations then humanity is doomed. And maybe destroy the things that are polluting the environment until they become too costly to operate. Probably avoid dictatorship though.

Interpretations may vary.

I made the mistake of commenting on a public news post over on CorporateBook about our record high temperatures, saying “if only we’d listened to climate scientists 50 years ago…” and all the crazies had to reply with the usual propaganda.

Yes, climate change has occurred naturally before. But never at the rate we’ve seen the last few decades.

I really should stop looking over there.

House Republicans lost another member in Rep. Ken Buck, R-Colo., on Friday. Gallagher's early departure could leave Republicans with just one vote to spare on legislation"

If one more resigns and the both get replaced by democrats, that could keep the Republicans from stealing the election next January.

@rayckeith new Congress is sworn in before the electoral college is counted, so all the seats will go through an election first. Replacements will just affect the next 9 months of gridlock and posturing.

I’ve decided I should actually try reading the rest of the Dune books. I tried once before, but bounced off either the 2nd or 3rd. But thinking on it, that was 35 years ago when I was twelve. So maybe it’s time for my adult brain to try it out.

😅

deinol,

@SJohnRoss I have heard that as well.

I’m also much more willing to skip to the next book if I find one us unbearable than I used to be. We’ll see how it goes.

Having started in on Dune Messiah I’m fairly certain I did read it before. It’s likely Children of Dune that I couldn’t get far in during middle school.

So far it’s a good sequel to Dune. In fact, it really feels more like a 3rd part to the original book.

Finally getting around to watching Bridgerton. Question without spoilers, but in the books do all the Bridgerton siblings end up in heteronormative relationships, or do any end up happily queer?
