I very much want this month, and this phase of the project I'm working on at work, to be over. I have zero energy for much of anything once I'm done for the day.

Always ask someone else to take a look at your great idea before you go into production.

rivetgeek,

@ericmpaq @JoshuaACNewman I mean regardless of what the initials stand for, it's kind of like if the product had SHIT or FUCK emblazoned on it. It's not great product placement for U.S. consumers, most of whom will see that an immediately think "smegma".

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@ericmpaq @JoshuaACNewman Puta is the problematic Spanish word. I think every grade school kid in Southern California knows what that means. Laputa pronounced correctly isn't bad, but they didn't want that slapped on the cover.

Harks back to when someone at my work named a test cluster TSTCL and didn't see it until it was pointed out to them.

I used to think my Dad was being ridiculous with the precise steps he insisted on taking to configure my Mom's PC with the JAWS screen reading software. And then I had to configure SQL Server failover clustering and suddenly I understood.

And this is from the first CD i purchased with my own money, picked out from a little CD-only store in Newport Beach that had opened up and we drove 45 minutes to get to.

The "robot" voice is exactly the same as my mom's first talking calculator, so I could play it along with the song.

I read once, I want to say from Al Jourgensen, that goosebumps are what tell you a song is the good shit. There's a physiological explanation for it, but that's the definition I go with.

And one of the reasons I love #VNVNation as much as I do is so many of their songs give me goosebumps. So far nothing they've done has topped the first time I heard this.

Because they bring me such joy, I will share with you all the software testing videos I share with my Software Design and Development students.

Video 1/3: “We don’t need user testing! We already know our users”

Children at a playground completely ignoring the slide, and sliding down the smooth hill upon which the slide is mounted

@inthehands There's a park in San Luis Obispo with a hill like that. Kids bring cardboard specifically to slide down the hill.

Okay, fun topic:

Looking for a wide variety of events that permanently alter cultures they occur in - not just regime change, but "things work differently now".

There's technology developments (in many types), opening of cultural interchange (trade routes, etc), the shit forms of culture exchange (conquest, colonization).

There's "A religion rises, codifying and extending our common beliefs".

What else might cause a permanent cultural shift?

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@miriamrobern @LeviKornelsen As well as drought, or really any large-scale environmental change (eruptions, earthquakes, meteor strikes, etc.).

One of the more frustrating things about playing #TTRPGs online is that it's challenging to pivot to another when not everyone can make it to the planned game. Granted, it was only two of us yesterday, but had there been three, we still couldn't have easily played something else.

LeviKornelsen, to random

Some of you have likely never experienced the purest, truest forms of "RPG as physics engine", like people actually shooting various things to see if the weapon penetration tables are good.

If you want to bake your noodle, go get the BIG version of GURPS Gulliver for 3rd edition, and enter the world of "Throwing distance modifiers by arm length? Fucking WHAT?"

...

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@LeviKornelsen I've heard an anecdote that the values for movement, lifting capacity, etc. in GURPS originally came from Steve Jackson doing those things and then measuring them. So everything in GURPS has a basis in "One (1) Steve Jackson".

@rdonoghue @LeviKornelsen Round penetration in PC decreases per yard travelled IIRC. And d1000 hit location charts.

To run with this thought a little bit: as a GM, it's worth being mindful about what players can do during downtime besides "watch".

It's easy to say that players should stay interested and attentive to what is going on at the table, and I think most are, but I think a lot of GM's fail to grasp how mind numbing it is to listen when things are 10% content and 90% mechanical haggling.

Normalizing note-taking as a way to fill that gap kills two birds with one stone.

@rdonoghue Drawing cards from a deck. Of course it depends on decks of some kind available, but even decks normally used for session zero like Decuma or Backstory Cards can give food for thought mid-game.

LeviKornelsen, to random
@LeviKornelsen@dice.camp avatar

I'm going to start referring to segments of a game's design space that are outside the fixed dice-and-numbers mechanisms but in reach of jury-rigging and good procedure as "the fruitful expanse", just so I can be arguing my own silly but catchy phrase instead of someone else's.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@LeviKornelsen that is the primary reason I started saying "physics engine" and "fiction engine". Gotta have that snappy catch phrase.

So my brain has been broken by like Fate, Cortex, and FitD because I'm looking at Cypher, and...yeah...it definitely does some things. They might even be great things. The books are amazingly put together. But pools and flavors and edge and effort are making my eyes cross for some reason.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@targrus It's similar with Cortex. Maybe not as much fine control, but there might some cross-pollination that I can do between the two.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@targrus In default Cortex Prime builds you can spend plot points to add additional dice to your total. So it may not be the same result you're trying to beat every time (depending on the roll) but you will know the total you're trying to beat and can adjust to beat that total up to how many plot points and the number of eligible dice you have. Like I said, not as much fine control.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@targrus Tbh on first read the whole thing isn't intuitive. Edge, effort, specialization, the whole thing. It would internalize quickly (I didn't find position and effect intuitive the first time I ran BitD), but definitely not at first blush.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@Sanakism It's definitely Cortex I like better. But the tables and genre advice in Cypher are really good.

Well, I found a gorgeous house here with enough room AND sun rooms for the cats (and us)! We're closing in 10ish days. I'm very excited about the house and having all this crap behind me. I'm also kind of surprised that this whole thing has basically been FTL as far as moving goes.

My house in Texas went on the market March 15 and is sold already. I'm closing on the new house April 15.

I'm on an AA Boeing 777 and the rather modern in-flight entertainment system has a port that looks like some 90s proprietary AV connector. Does anyone know what this is for?

The in flight entertainment system in question

@karpour It appears to be an S-video port. Welcome to the 90s.

This is your regular reminder that "I did this thing 20 years ago" is not the same thing as "I have 20 years of experience." It's not even an indicator that you have any idea of how things are done now.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@evacide Usually when the words "I did this 20 years ago" fall out of my mouth it's in the context of, "I don't fucking remember how to do this, it was 20 years ago". Cf the revelation the environment of one of our acquisitions uses SQL Server replication, and my boss asking me how much experience I have with it after revealing he was in the same boat.
