dessalines,

Really important for world emissions for the US specifically to transition to EVs too, considering it has the highest per capita road emissions in the world.

dessalines,

What exactly is wrong with a country subsidizing green energy products? Not only that, but making them available cheaply to other countries?

dessalines, (edited )

Also no US auto-manufacturer is going all in on EVs, they’re all mostly building gas-guzzling oversized trucks and SUVs. US automakers intentionally killed EVs in the 90s, and hoped no other country would start building them.

dessalines,

We can thank the US oil and auto industries (the same ones dictating these green energy tariffs to their political puppets), for that too.

dessalines,

The point of trade decisions, is to import products you don’t have enough domestic production to cover the demand for.

We know that the US auto and oil industries have no sincere desire to build EVs anyway (or any green industry whatsoever), because they did their best to kill their domestic production of EVs in the 90s, and there’s no US industry for solar panels.

This is all just part of the US’s trade war with China, that is prioritizing the profits of its auto and oil industries over the wellbeing of the environment, and the desires of its citizens for electric vehicles.

dessalines,

Yeah I don’t get why this is shocking.

Cut a pizza into four pieces. Multiply by two (same as dividing by 0.5), you now have half a pizza (0.5).

dessalines,

For a tiny language, I really like toki pona, but it’s meant to be a minimal artistic language, more than an IAL (international auxiliary language).

Last I checked tho, Globasa looks really interesting. The way that they add new vocabulary, and have a good representation of world languages, seems to work well.

Esperanto is also good, but when my partner tried to learn it, they were weirded out by some of it’s quirks, like noun declinations based on whether it’s a subject or object, that seems unecessary.

dessalines,

For sure. A dissapointing number of IALs have nearly all their vocab from european languages, but there are a few that try earnestly to source their vocab from a wide set of language families. Any global initiative for an IAL needs to have a global vocabulary set to have any hopes of being introduced.

dessalines,

Recognizeable for whom, is the question. The majority of IALs to date have had a highly eurocentric vocabulary, so they can’t be recognizeable to even a plurality of the world.

dessalines,

I don’t get it at all. There are plenty of platforms like matrix, xmpp, simplex that don’t require phone numbers tied to your identity. Signal has somehow managed to convince people that it’s a private platform, despite it being a US hosted service that requires phone numbers.

dessalines, (edited )

Metadata and social graphs are more important than message content, esp since not many people have the time to read through individual messages to build meaning.

Signal stores phone numbers (meaning your identity, and home address), and message timestamps: who texted who and when, and who’s in chats with who else. More than enough to build social graphs and connections, and also figure out where people are through their IP addresses.

dessalines,

Probably too soon to say, but hopefully.

dessalines,

With a few more additions, lemmy could serve as a good replacement. We already have a Forum / NewComments sort which is perfect for question / answer type communities. We could add a feature to make default sorts for specific communities, so they would feel less fast, or possibly a sort that brings zero comment posts (IE meaning unanswered), to the top.

The reputation and “accepted answer” features from SO are a lot less important than threaded comments can be, especially since questions often need new answers every year, making the “accepted answer” pointless.

dessalines,

You only rent the beer.

From Losurdo - A critique of the category of totalitarianism:

Nowadays we constantly hear denunciations, directed toward Islam, of ‘religious totalitarianism’ or of the ‘new totalitarian enemy that is terrorism’. The language of the Cold War has reappeared with renewed vitality, as confirmed by the warning that American Senator Joseph Lieberman has issued to Saudi Arabia: beware the seduction of Islamic totalitarianism, and do not let a ‘theological iron curtain’ separate you from the Western world.

Even though the target has changed, the denunciation of totalitarianism continues to function with perfect efficiency as an ideology of war against the enemies of the Western world. And this ideology justifies the violation of the Geneva Convention, the inhuman treatment of prisoners in Guantanamo Bay, the embargo and collective punishment inflicted upon the Iraqis and other peoples, and the further torment perpetrated against the Palestinians. The struggle against totalitarianism serves to legitimate and transfigure the total war against the ‘barbarians’ who are alien to the Western world.

dessalines,

To add, there is only one country on earth with > 800 external military bases, and through an incredibly effective propanda campaign, they’ve managed to convince the world that its not them, but their enemies that are “totalitarian” and “authoritarian”.

dessalines,

I’d like to add that the nordic countries are not socialist by any metric.

Also, we shouldn’t be so quick to trust western media on the DPRK, who have gotten to the point that they can literally say anything about their enemies, and have it be believed.

dessalines,

That chart is pretty great, because it shows that only a tiny minority of US states have smaller incarceration rates than Russia.

dessalines,

No, its because the post creator used the image twice, as a post URL, and in the post body. It only needs to be in the post url.
