‘We will fight with our fingernails’ says Netanyahu after US threat to curb arms (www.theguardian.com)

Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed that Israel will stand alone and “fight with our fingernails” in defiance of US threats to further restrict arms deliveries if Israeli forces proceeded with an offensive on the southern Gazan city of Rafah....

dogslayeggs,

OK. Do it.

A) Most people don’t believe that the only way Israel is able to fight off the evil Palestinians is because of bid daddy US.

B) The 13,000 Palestinian children you have murdered would’ve been happy to be able to defend themselves against fingernails.

How Republicans Echo Antisemitic Tropes Despite Declaring Support for Israel (www.nytimes.com)

The Republican speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, traveled to Columbia University two weeks ago to decry the “virus of antisemitism” that he said pro-Palestinian protesters were spreading across the country. “They have chased down Jewish students. They have mocked them and reviled them,” he said to jeers from...

dogslayeggs,

MTG, the person who blamed CA wildfires on Jewish space lasers, is showing her support for Israel…

dogslayeggs,

I think X is wrong, but I want it to be legal to do wrong stuff that I like.

dogslayeggs, (edited )

I’m old enough to remember when cable didn’t have ads. I was really young, maybe 5ish, but even then it was confusing to me when they started adding commercials. That was for bad TV with the antenna. Then it was only HBO that didn’t have ads, but we couldn’t afford that until I was much older.

EDIT: I guess my memories of being 5 years old aren’t very accurate.

dogslayeggs,

You’re right. I guess I was remembering premium channels and some niche channels that were cable-only. Most channels available on early cable were just piping non-local broadcast channels down a cable.

dogslayeggs,

No, that’s not nepotism.

dogslayeggs,

No it isn’t. The conclusion was to use networking. Nepotism is favoring your family members or favoring someone you are close to purely because of the closeness, not because of their skills. Networking is asking your friends if they know anyone hiring and then reaching out to them to apply. There might be a slight hint of nepotism in them listening to you at first, but networking is about building a relationship based on the work you have done in the past and using that to get new work.

dogslayeggs,

Calling this place full of conservatives is one of the most laughably stupid things I’ve read all week. One of my biggest issues with Lemmy is how I rarely see differing viewpoints, since it’s mostly liberals here. The biggest differences in opinions is how liberal are the viewpoints. Hell, the person you’re arguing with basically agrees with you and is just saying there is nuance and context to looking at history.

dogslayeggs,

If I were to have guessed I would have said squid came from both squalo meaning shark and squamata for reptiles like snakes. A squid is like a snake shark, so squa-ish. Add some shift in sounds over the centuries and it becomes squid.

Study reveals "widespread, bipartisan aversion" to neighbors owning AR-15 rifles (www.psypost.org)

A recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reveals that across all political and social groups in the United States, there is a strong preference against living near AR-15 rifle owners and neighbors who store guns outside of locked safes. This surprising consensus suggests that when it comes...

dogslayeggs,

Yes, people want to feel safe. Emotional health is an important part of quality of life.

And this isn’t a data-driven decision. This is a study on how people feel about an issue. Nobody is making a decision based on this, outside of politicians understanding the best way to speak in public when campaigning. Why are you so upset that someone studies how people feel? Yes, the study could have been more in-depth and asked about different types of rifles, but then someone would complain that they didn’t include X gun or Y rifle, or they would complain that they lumped all rifles together, or complain about the lumping of “assault rifles,” or complain that shotguns aren’t included.

It’s like turning right on red. It has been proven to be safer by tons of data-driven studies. But people fucking hate it when you are used to being able to turn and go about your drive when there is no traffic around.

dogslayeggs,

I get your point, but you are completely ignoring the handgun hunters out there. There was even a magazine devoted to it when magazines were still a thing. A simple internet search turns a bunch of sites devoted to it.

dogslayeggs,

You might not understand what the First Amendment means.

This is not a law against speech. This is “private repercussions to public speech,” which is absolutely allowed. Further, this is a private organization, not a governmental org. Now, there might be a case for discrimination of a protected class (not sure where NC stands on protecting sexuality), but the school will say the firing is because of social media postings and not because the teacher’s sexuality.

In Indianapolis, a Catholic school fired a much beloved teacher because they found out she was a lesbian. She wasn’t open about it but was in a long term relationship a woman. There was a lot of outcry, but it was legal under Indiana laws.

dogslayeggs,

If you listen closely, you can hear the ship’s captain yelling at the whale, “Hey, I’m fucking sailing here!!”

dogslayeggs,

Consider this: you are making the same “Science is a bitch… sometimes” argument that Mack made on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. You are making the exact same argument that was intended to show how unbelievably stupid he is.

dogslayeggs,

That’s an argument for why it might not be as useful as we thought. It is not an argument for why it is harmful or negative or shouldn’t be used. If it does no harm, then let the people who are afraid of it for no reason to filter it out.

dogslayeggs,

Aquafresh Extreme or whatever has a citrusy taste with a hint of mint. I love it, but my fiance hates it. It’s called Mint Blast, but it’s so minty that it doesn’t taste minty to me.

You might like it, or you might hate it with the fire of a thousand suns.

dogslayeggs,

It’s not just designer goods. They also have liquor stores that advertise on Instagram and sites that “sell” very hard to find collectors’ items that are available now.

dogslayeggs,

Trump mostly lost because of his handling of COVID. If he had just said, “hey everyone, this virus is dangerous you might want to take more care and listen to doctors” instead of making it political or denying it so long then he probably would have won. People have already forgotten COVID and are upset with inflation, and many of them blame Biden for that. They rightly aren’t happy with the economy, since rising stock markets and low unemployment doesn’t equate to rising wages to match inflation.

Biden has done a ton of good things as President, but it never gets press. The bad stuff he has done has gotten a ton of press. I think it will be close again and am hopeful Biden does better at highlighting the good things he’s done.

dogslayeggs,

So wait, how is this not ransom? They committed a crime and completed their punishment plus paid a fine. Now they are being held against their will and can only be released after their families pay money that wasn’t directed by the judicial system. I know this is India and not the US, but that sounds exactly like unlawful confinement and ransom to me.

dogslayeggs,

What laws are people breaking by peacefully protesting? Many of these college campuses (not all) where protests are happening are state schools, not private property, so I don’t know how trespassing laws work when you are a student who is allowed to be on campus 24 hours a day to study and whatnot.

dogslayeggs,

I feel like I’ve seen more stories of pro-Israel counter-protesters causing violence and harming others. But fucking Mitch was a terrible governor and didn’t do much good as a president of Purdue, either, so he probably wouldn’t acknowledge that.

dogslayeggs,

No, I think you don’t get that is their normal day-to-day clothing. They were just walking by and decided to join the counter-protests.
