@doskel@mst.doskel.net

hi, i'm doskel (all lowercase, I swear to god if you capitalize my name), a terrible programmer, massive *nix nerd, occasional radio operator, and hobby grass-toucher. i like to play with old computers from time to time, and you might also find me outside riding bikes or hiking/climbing, with an occasional dabble in skiing.
im relatively extroverted; if you have anything interesting you'd like to tell me about, or even just the weather, id love to chat!

There was a time in the furry community where one did not need to worry about this. I miss those times!

love that my college disabled exchange app passwords so the only way to use their email is through the official outlook apps, which fucking suck

i do love how you can just go on mcmaster carr and order spheres of a bunch of different materials and have them show up next day

this is a super cool protocol and i really need to get into it but the naming alone is great
https://cats.radio/
cats packets are composed of whiskers that are connected to the internet via the felinet

doskel,
@doskel@mst.doskel.net avatar

@tek_dmn that first point is the big one, yeah.i think it's largely helped by even pretty decent cats radios being less than 70$, which is rather less than a baofeng + cable, as well as the fact you could probably use it to do other fsk things like paging if you wanted.
the second one is the classic standards problem, but given it does have some backwards compatibility with aprs-is, i think it's largely fine if it doesn't completely take over.
of course, the biggest issue imo is that we don't know if it's going to be complete any time soon.

doskel,
@doskel@mst.doskel.net avatar

@tek_dmn my general default baofeng is something like the uv-5r, but i guess we're both in the wrong place given one of those quansheng k5s is like 20$ or something ridiculous

ai6yr, to cycling

Ran some errands by bicycle today... surprised how easy it actually is to get to the store here without running into ANY traffic, if you know the back route. A lot more people could bicycle to the store, if there were a culture change (living in car-driven SoCal).

doskel,

@ai6yr @meganL most stores are surprisingly fine with you bringing a bike in; just ask if you can set it at the front and they'll usually say yes.

The Leaving Rust Gamedev article resonates with most of the frustrations I've had working on the internals of Tangerine (C++) since I converted it from being largely single threaded spaghetti to aggressively concurrent spaghetti, and that's making me think maybe I'd have a better time if I picked a different language for the hot paths, because necessary non-compulsory refactoring also kills iteration time.

I just don't know what though, because nothing ever seems to fit the bill of what I need.

doskel,
@doskel@mst.doskel.net avatar

@aeva i mean you might want to consider go? it's not a particularly standard choice for graphics stuff but i really like it, and concurrency is obv one of its main features

doskel,
@doskel@mst.doskel.net avatar

@aeva also, it happily hooks into C, which might make a transition to it easier?

doskel,
@doskel@mst.doskel.net avatar

@aeva former: i have no idea, nowhere near my area of expertise
latter: i've never had a go project fail to compile because it removed language features, and i've compiled some old nonsense; the biggest issue is that it handles dependencies as URLs and that leads to a lot of fucked-up consequences because of the way they're handled (https://sourcehut.org/blog/2023-01-09-gomodulemirror/) but generally if the deps exist it'll compile happily

doskel,
@doskel@mst.doskel.net avatar

@aeva 1: no, no google projects have a dependency on copyleft stuff by their internal policy
2: i'm not sure, i just hide in my highlevel land. sorry about that.
3: no. go makes entirely static binaries, for better or worse.

doskel,
@doskel@mst.doskel.net avatar

@aeva nope, not afaik

Is there a Linux [window manager / desktop environment / whatever they're called these days] that has good support for fractional resolution scaling on hidpi displays? My aging eyes really want 150% scaling for this Framework 13 laptop, but gnome only offers 100% and 200%.

EDIT: so far KDE does the right thing. I wish there were more options though.

doskel,
@doskel@mst.doskel.net avatar

@aeva GNOME can do fractional scaling on Wayland, it's just a little blurry for Xwayland apps

doskel,
@doskel@mst.doskel.net avatar

@aeva just run gsettings set org.gnome.mutter experimental-features "['scale-monitor-framebuffer']" and then the option will appear
this could, depending on who you ask, increase gpu usage, but apparently that's debated, so ¯_(ツ)_/¯
