Why? I financed an AVP too and use it extensively for my business. Maybe they’re doing the same? Especially with the Apple Card, it’s 0% interest. Why wouldn’t you do that instead of paying for the whole thing outright? Anyone who paid for the whole thing outright seems like a moron to me.
Well, my business case is pretty specific but, to answer your question directly, it’s not meant as a replacement for either of those things. I use it in conjunction with my laptop and several iPhones. We film everything in Spatial Video so that we have LIDAR/depth info for the project we’re working on. The Vision Pro lets me record and preview the video immediately.
Outside of that, I use the screen mirroring on my MacBook pretty religiously and I love being able to have my various workspaces all around me. For whatever reason, my mind works better when I can separate things spatially and have certain apps open in one room. I’m a pacer so I like to think about what I’m doing while pacing and looking using the Vision Pro and then, when I’m ready, I sit down at my desk, mirror the display, and finish what I’m working on.
It’s really cool. It’s definitely the worst version of the product it’s ever going to be so the amount of use I get out of it right now just makes me more excited for what’s to come in the future. As long as I’m getting use out of it now, though, I see no issues with the cost because it’s literally something I can’t do with any other device (and I own all the other VR headsets, including the Quest and Index).
I use it at work to both film and preview Spatial Video while we’re capturing footage. I don’t think it has paid for itself yet (although I could make the argument that having a 4K 3D TV on the go is worth it too for when I’m not working) but I can see that point rapidly approaching. It definitely enables things that weren’t possible before and, for whatever reason, my brain works better with the concept of spatial computing and being able to separate what I’m doing by actual physical location with the added ability that I can prioritize and position what I’m working on in 3D space. I attempted this before with the Quest and even with the Valve Index and various virtual desktop tools but none work as well as the AVP combined with my MacBook and the iPhones we use.
You’re factually wrong about several things in what you wrote but, more generally, I think you’re very wrong on what it is, what it can become, and why it should exist. You can’t say that it’s failed spectacularly unless you know what the goals and targets were so I think it’s silly to even try to make that point, much less without anything to support that kind of assertion.
Even the absolutes in which you speak are wrong. I paid for one and am happy I did. I plan to buy more of them as our usage expands and it will pay for itself before the end of the quarter. If it gets better than this with successive versions, that could be considered a major success. I think everyone can agree it’s a niche product right now but to say that nobody wants to pay for one and that it has failed is just nonsensical.

This is app is very underrated. On the Apple Vision Pro, it was the only app with a working 3D video player at launch. If only they could get the BTAS intro working properly, it would be really incredible.
I wouldn’t ban them outright but I would make it required to register events where they were going to be used and ban them outside of that. The majority of house fires and injuries with fireworks happen in residential areas and those are also the ones where people with PTSD and animals are affected the most.

Yes. 100%. It’s always combative, condescending, and rarely, if ever, from actual enthusiasts. Just the other day, someone started a comment with “I have never liked Apple after the bullshit it pulled with iTunes” talking about the iPhone and suggesting that he was a counter-example to people switching to iPhone from Android. He’s openly admitting that he has a bias against Apple that existed before the iPhone was even released and yet, for some reason, felt the need to participate in an “Apple enthusiast” discussion.
Apple obviously doesn’t do everything right but the amount of engagement here from people who don’t use Apple products is far too high for an enthusiast community. It would be like someone going into a community for motorcycle enthusiasts and constantly talking about how cars are better and safer.
The only cult I ever see IRL is the cult of Android and Linux users that feel like their unwarranted opinion is something anyone asked for. Lemmy tends to have more tech-savvy people in its communities so even Windows doesn’t escape the wrath of these people. For all the complaints of fanboyism, the worst fanboys are the anti-Apple ones.
I feel like you’re describing something that I regularly see as a fan of some of the Assassin’s Creed games. I’m a patient gamer and am just now getting to the newer ones having finished Black Flag recently. For every game so far, I’ve seen what you’re describing.

This is the wrong crowd for that, mate. I’ve gone through this rodeo on Lemmy too many times and you’re just going to get dishonest people pretending that what they’re doing isn’t stealing. It’ll be everything from “preservation of games” to “it’s just like renting from a library” and all the extremes of dishonesty.
I wouldn’t trust Epic with anything after the shit they pulled with Unreal and the EGS. Any company that uses dark patterns to keep people from cancelling services is bullshit, imo. If every company made it as easy to cancel and manage my subscriptions and purchases as Apple, I wouldn’t care but they don’t.
That’s why the captivity is so desirable and why it’s only going to get worse. Desperate people don’t have the luxury of caring if the job they take is going to be fulfilling or happy. They need the money more than any empathy or principles they have. If people are sad, you replace them because there’s crowds of desperate people that also quit their last job because it made them unhappy and now all their bills are 10-15% higher than they were before.
I’m pretty privileged to be in a good spot and even I can see the writing on the wall - everyone around me is sad, overwhelmed, stressed, and angry and they can’t find anything that opens the release valve. I don’t understand how all these selfish bastards can look around and think that the US is doing great.
I love Conan but I’m getting the strange feeling that, like Stanley Tucci and a lot of these show hosts, this is an excuse for him to travel the world as a giant business expense. I’m a bit jealous that he gets to do that.
