Day 31 - Madrid to Lisbon. This is going to be an all day haul! Glad I left early because Atocha is by far the biggest and most confusing station yet. Sadly, I am now scanned in to a departure area that has no coffee so I’ll just have to hope they have it on the train - which is in an hour 🙃

Just wasted two hours of my life discovering that you cannot buy seat reservations using the eurail tool for Spain nor can you use your eurail pass and buy them through the Spanish train service without paying for a whole ticket vs just the seat reservation. Has worked seamlessly in every bloody country other than Spain. Lots of very cranky people on the travel forums

One of my absolute favourite things about France is that the idea that French people walk around the steeets carrying bags with baguettes poking out the top is 100% true!

Dear pocket friends in the US, I hope the result in the current criminal trial of your dickhead is as satisfying as ours was is Australia today.

Day 19 - Marseille. Wow, what a city! Absolutely love it here 😁 Tjis is somewhere I could see myself living very easily.

Things I’m still surprised by when I come back to Europe:

Soldiers with machine guns just wandering down the street chatting or standing around on street corners 😬

How many people still smoke 😳

How bloody fabulous the intercity / intercountry trains are 😁

How great the outside public areas are and how well they’re used. Wish we did this better in Australia 🌳 ⛲️ 🍽️

Troubling. I have met a few people from the US while travelling this last couple of weeks and although they have all been democrats they believe that Trump is likely to win this election! Is that really possible? Absolutely mind boggling if so

I mean, I could spend €9 on a cappuccino but why would I? Geez, some of these places really are having a lend 🤣

I honestly don’t know why anyone would choose a plane when they had high speed rail available, considering how far ahead you need to get to airport, security etc the travel times are often comparable

I’m not a huge recommender of things but three apps I find indispensable while travelling are Tripit, Moovit and Splitwise. Tripit lets me keep my itinerary sorted, import confirmations, copies of bookings, tickets etc and Moovit (which I also use in Australia) is a public transport app which I have used all around the world (including Morocco and Vietnam). I wouldn’t have missed my stop yesterday if I had left Moovit on once I was on the train 🤣 The other one which is fantastic if you are travelling and splitting expenses with others is Splitwise, my friends and I are using it for our Ghan trip since we have all been paying for bits and pieces and it’s easy to lose track. Nothing in this for me, just honest recommendations I hope others might find useful

Ok friends, day seven I went on a Naples underground tour and did something which was a real challenge to me as a claustrophobe. Part of the tour was approx. 100 metres of very narrow tunnels, they’re also quite low but at 4’9 that didn’t worry me as much! There was an emergency exit 10 metres in which a few people used but I stayed the course, tried to control my anxiety and got through 😁 The underground was very interesting. Used as bomb shelters in WW2, apparently Naples was one of the most bombed places in the world during the war

One of the pools inside Naples underground it is a large pool of extremely clear water surrounded by reddish rock walls. You can see the decorative balastrade surrounding the pool and some people standing around
The entrance to the underground tour. There is a carved stone entrance with the words Napoli Sotteerranea and what looks like a chubby man baby head on top

In things I learned today "Pepsi-Cola" is actually derived from "dyspepsia (i.e., indigestion), which the beverage was supposed to assuage."

Day two. The Acropolis was just next level…once I made it up that hill! The theatre was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen in my life, one day I’d love to see a performance in one of these theatres. Very glad I was there at 7.50am ready for the gates opening at 8. Definitely wouldn’t want to go any later than that, it was completely choccas by 9

Odeon of Herodes Atticus theatre at the Acropolis. The photo is taken looking downwards towards the stage over rows of marble seating. The grey and white checkerboard of the stage is still very clear however the walls at the front of the stage are in very bad condition. Behind the open walls there is a view over the roofs of Athens that look mostly white
A view looking upwards of some of the columns of the Acropolis. There are partially complete light coloured stone walls on the left and in front. In front there are three light coloured fluted columns with another on visible behind them on the right. The columns at the front are broken at the top but the back one six still supporting a roof.
View of the Acropolis from the bottom of the hill. In the foreground are a few spindly green trees with a sheer greyish brown cliff behind them. At the top of the hill in the middle and right are the ruins of the Acropolis with light coloured columns supporting a beam across that would have originally supported the roof (I think). The columns are fluted and the beam is elaborate although you cannot see the detail at this distance.

This is the face of a little orange cat whose person is going away for seven weeks. I don’t know who is sadder, me or her.

Getting my tech set up for my trip. I upgrade my phone quite seldom (I’m on a iPhone 12 mini and will stay on that until it dies) but I always keep my old phone running, load all my trip details and pack it in my carryon just in cases. I’ve lost a phone on a trip before and these days it really has the potential to make life very difficult. I also bought a second hand iPad mini, I prefer my surface but adding the charger and extra weight is a no go this time. All connected via ‘find my’ so if worst happens I can track and lock the device. One day to go!

Woke up, went to use the toilet, and as I'm sitting there my cat appears and stares at me.

I get dressed as my cat watches.

I start to leave the bedroom and my cat is at the top of the stairs waiting for me to go down.

I go down and my cat walks ahead of me to get to the patio door. I open the door and my cat steps out.

I feed the dog, and then sit in my chair and pull my laptop up.

My cat jumps on the arm of the chair and starts purring waiting for me to brush it.

How did your day start?

Back to work on Monday and I will be doing a combination or wfh and office so I guess it’s time to get my monitor and office chair from the storage area and reassemble everything. Very glad they’re flexible, I don’t want any contract that’s 100% in the office again

Ok pocket friends, so far my adventure is including Greece, Italy and Slovenia before I head to Marseille to meet my sister. Where else would you suggest I go in France? So far I’ve got Marseille and Lyon on my list. I’ve been to Paris once for a few days decades ago but other than that, France is an unknown to me!
