duckHunter,

I read the interoperability article with the biggest most detrimental in mind: . Certainly interoperability is the weakness of many walled gardens. But when the marginalized group is small (Tor users, CGNAT users, bots, etc), your playbook doesn’t seem to cover that one. If lawmakers were to push interoperability & force CF to accommodate those they exclude, CF is still “the internet” (future reference).

duckHunter,

@Remontoire @serenitynot I can attest Purism’s lack of integrity & lack of professionalism.

A audit project was created on the git repo. They spontaneously & silently deleted the whole project (data & accounts) without warning. They also said nothing after the sabotage. This was the project that was the basis for these findings:

http://techrights.org/2021/03/15/duckduckgo-in-2021/

The project existed as an effort to test the merit/wisdom of the making the default search engine.

duckHunter,

@Remontoire @serenitynot So it’s clear that intends to push the “privacy theatre” agenda to cash in on deception, rather than doing right by their customers.

Suppressing research into the privacy aspects of their products is clearly cause for distrust IMO.

duckHunter,

@Remontoire @serenitynot The way they ghosted a customer is starkly comparable to the manner in how they deleted the #DuckDuckGo research project & deleted existence of the contributor without a word.

@tiagorangel
That’s not true. Suppose 15 Europeans see your post because you posted in the morning, in Europe. And say that generates 5 boosts. Then you reboost 8 hours later 30 USians see the post for the 1st time because of that 2nd boost. 10 of them decide to boost it.

You seem to be assuming everyone sees your msg the 1st time. That’s not how it works. Most people follow 100+ other people. They don’t see every message and largely miss what happened when they were sleeping.
@stefan

duckHunter,

@stefan Does a transparent algorithmic timeline exist anywhere? ActivityPub timelines are transparent but their simplicity¹ somewhat contradicts calling them “algorithmic”. It’s the lack of algorithm that (for example) causes unintentional under exposure of msgs in distant timezones.

  1. the algo is simple but the result is profoundly complex in the sense that authors have no way of concretely knowing the reach of their msgs.
duckHunter,

@stefan My search for
Home feed digest came up short. I can only guess by the name that users could request a digest of select msgs over a span of time, which seems to imply a smart algo would filter out less interesting content to yield a digestible subset. Is that correct?

If so, such a feature would indeed kill off one of the self-boosting use-cases I mentioned.

duckHunter,

@stefan Someone posted recently saying “lives literally depend on Mastodon”, or something like that. I thought it sounded far-fetched. But when you say people rely on social media for income, I wonder if that’s what they meant. Which perhaps should really have been phrased as “livelihoods”.

I'm collecting about and the . Some findings include:

  • people really care about image descriptions (and that's awesome!)
  • most of us are in the fediverse, some are on it
  • you might want to be careful with boosting your own posts

duckHunter,

@stefan not sure what care would need to be taken when self-boosting.
