dustin,

@cabel no abs.

dustin,

@cabel also, Studio C(heese)? I assume?

Is it weird that I basically use the star button in Mastodon as a “Hey I’m here and I read your message!” button?

I just want people to know I saw and read their messages. To know they’re not being ignored. Mastodon allows for this (kinda?) with the one-way star feedback.

🌟 I have scanned 28 issues of "Backstage Disneyland", an incredible, beautiful cast member newsletter from the 60's, 70's and early 80's — and they're now on the Internet Archive for you to read.

Like Disneyland? You'll like these!!

Read them on my blog: https://cabel.com/2023/06/26/backstage-disneyland/

dustin,

@cabel wow these are rad—is each issue in a unique format? I went searching for “Cafe Candids" in other issues but haven't found any yet.

I love how my 6yo son can annoy me but his little 3yo sister can annoy him so it all works out.

Thinking this morning about how Vision Pro will lack contextual menus and menus in general. I guess? How would you activate a contextual menu anyway? Stare?

Seriously though, it’ll be interesting to see how Apple brings pro apps to this thing, with their 1000s of little features and options.

The apps they’ve shown are relatively simple. However, I do see a Keynote app icon…

This is the most Akira / Anime thing I've ever seen in real life

Trying to jam this wild machine through this tiny-ass doorway. The cables and hoses, the tank treads. If this isn't a folded-up mech that will transform on the other side I'm going to be so bummed out

dustin,

@cabel I feel like Daxton lives next door.

The next iPhone will definitely be able to take 3D photos/video.

I just love the quiet moments in Studio Ghibli films. More of that is kid friendly films please. My son loves Kiki’s Delivery Service. Much of it is just characters having conversations. No music. No action. No silliness.

I want to know how accurate hand input is on Vision Pro. Like, could I use just my hand for design work? No mouse? I wonder what Figma is like in Safari. Hmm!

Or will I need to connect a trackpad/mouse? In which case… what does the cursor look like? The Mac still has that pixel precision not present on iOS devices.

Maybe we need more large companies working on ambitious projects for 7-10 years before release.

This year:
Nintendo: Tears of the Kingdom: ~7 years
Apple: Vision Pro/visionOS: ~7 years

I guess when you’re used to giving away your malware of a social network for free, you would never have dreamed anyone would pay $3499 for a version of the product done right.

I did like that shortly after announcing a feature that detects how far a screen is from your face, they announce a screen that straps to your face.

Why do all of Apple’s new computing platforms have no answer for development? Like, I can’t use their new platforms to build. Not iPhone, not iPad, not Vision. It’s still the Mac doing the heavy lifting. Touch apps built on a mouse based system. 3D apps built on a 2D system. Apple is missing out on apps developed for these systems on these systems. The Mac is a mess. But apparently it’s the mess that works for this messy world.

Getting into the WWDC groove by investigating SharePlay support in @broadcastsapp. It’s trivially easy to implement, and it seems to just work

dustin,

@stroughtonsmith I hope they start to play with the fact that these apps are scattered across space and can point to each other in new ways. These iOS dialogs feel like they’re from another time.

I say this of course not having used the device. Maybe this is the best way. :)

dustin,

@gruber @dwineman @clarko @siracusa sorry I feel the need to pop in here and say that if Apple can’t seem to be bothered to make consistent high quality Mac apps like they used to, people notice and tend not to try. It appears Apple has mostly lost interest in building high quality Mac software. They’re cutting corners. Startups think their stuff is roughly just as good. This reminds me of how folks felt of Windows early 2000s. I may be wrong, I want to be wrong, but I can’t shake the feeling.

Remembering those moments of boredom where you’d just stare at the fabric of the couch or chair you were on and look over all the detailing.

One of many little types of moments I find I’ve replaced with phone time. I will get this back this year. I miss it dearly.

Have been feeling very disconnected from the world/reality. Haven’t been looking at it very closely expect through screens.

Genuinely considering trying a year without an iPhone. Green chat bubbles is a worthwhile trade imho. 😅

What are the chances we see more creative crafting mechanics in upcoming Nintendo games like Mario/Mario Kart? Power up crafting. Build karts from scratch. Maybe?

I mean, I guess there was Mario Maker!

dustin,

@Craigp you’re probably right!

Does anyone have a Bluesky invite? I guess I have to see it now. HAVE TO.

Just used Happy Returns to return an item at a FedEx location and the person who processed the return says “you don’t want to know what happens to these… they’re written off as a loss and we don’t know where they go.”

Happy Returns, people.

dustin,

@jenni just load the returns into a cannon and point it out to sea.
