To run a creative business, you need both.

@evoterra has proven patient & invaluable as a podcasting resource.

Mr. Rogers said 'Look for the Helpers' (and be one youself).

You need outside data for 'inspiration' so don't be afraid to ask for outside help in other ways.

Not to mention feedback, outside POV, criticism.

I started watching Columbo at the start of the pandemic (my Dad was a big fan of the show, so I had watched some of the later TV movies with him as a kid), but kind of dropped it. I thought I got farther, but I guess I stopped in the middle of season 3. Started watching again tonight with Robert Culp's third appearance as the murderer.

I panic. Did he get in a fight and get banned from a mutual server? Did one of my servers ban him? Why? What happened?!

I'm scrambling to check our mutual social media spaces trying to figure out how my friend might have gotten in trouble.

So Post News is the first post-Twitter casualty, but it won't be the last. I think it's clear that in terms of for profit microblogging, Twitter and Threads are going to be the ones to survive (I have zero confidence in the long term viability of such services as Cohost, Hive Social, Spoutible, and even Blue Sky). While I realize that and the aren't free, they aren't beholden to same market forces as the others and I feel they will continue to endure.

@Tim_Eagon we'll see. It'll be interesting as all these services start trying to find ways to monetize. BlueSky has been pretty lively, though not as active as Twitter in its heyday.

Conversation earlier today has me thinking a bit about the distinction between open and open source in RPGs (setting aside the topic of not-really-open RPGs).

There are plenty of open systems (that is, systems you can legitimately take and do whatever the heck you want with them) but a much smaller set of open source systems ( @malin keeps a nice list of them here - https://ttrpgs.com/post/foss_list - if you’re curious.)

It's a curious distinction.

@rdonoghue I think the way open gaming works, as opposed to open source software, is well-suited to iteration of game mechanics in a way it wouldn't be for software. Most people need one word processor, so it's Word, or OpenOffice, or LibreOffice, or... you scramble for market share and hope to win, or potentially die on the vine. On the other hand, with games, there's room on my shelf and yours for Apocalypse World, and Monster of the Week, and Blades in the Dark, and Band of Blades, and...

@rdonoghue Yeah, I was vaguely around during the OGL rollout, but cut my teeth in that heyday. Then came GSL...

I think a lot can be said of the idea that OGL disguised and delayed the common understanding about the uncopyrightability of game mechanics.

Open gaming is good for the community, but it's also the path of least resistance.
