So, before Launchpad was added in macOS 10.7, was the "Applications" section of Finder the normal way to find and open an application that isn't in the dock?

The way Mac .app bundles work seems kind of neat, actually. I guess AppImage and Zero Install are based on a similar model. But now Apple (and Microsoft) is trying to shift to an app store model, while hiding the filesystem from the user. As is the norm on mobile.

@soller @ids1024 pretty much this yeah, but prior to 10.5 (and even before mac OS X, not everything ended up in the apple menu!) you did have to open up finder and navigate to the applications folder. Finder had this pinned to the sidebar by default (see image), and you had the option to turn on "Simple Finder" which completely abstracted away the file system from view and just left you with a paginated window of the applications folder

Don't you hate having to tell your keyboard what CPU your computer uses?

@foone oh I didn't know that it supported bluesky

I really, deeply wish everyone would make some collective effort to unlearn the passive argumentative nature we all learned from Twitter.

Everyone always treated posts like invitations to debate or argue every point.

We deserve better than this. We don’t have to do that.

@louie Definitely feeling this with all the FUD that's been making the rounds across the Fediverse lately. Unlearning is very much an uphill battle but I'll get there someday. 😅

It still takes a while before Meta(P92) joins the Fediverse and the recent times we have read a lot of things from both sides

Polls are not super reliable but maybe it will give a better overall picture of what you, the people using these platforms want

The result will not be the definite outcome for us but I do take it into heavy consider because I love you all very much!

"Would YOU want to federate with Meta's new platform?"

@stux I'm honestly stuck between the two personally. I'd rather not give Meta/Facebook the upper hand here, but at the same time ActivityPub is supposed to be resilient to hostile corporate takeovers and I feel that being able to start out with "Threads" and then move to another site while still having the ability to interact with all of your friends there could be a huge boon (provided that they don't stop federating of course, which they probably will do somewhere down the line).

honestly I gotta say: love the feature set of , hate the UI. there's way too much going on, everything's vying for your attention and it results in a very confusing posting experience

I'm sure it's great for a lot of people but it's definitely not my kind of software. I'm really glad that the fediverse gives you options
