While it may indeed be a little crazy to be launching another type-focussed book so soon after the release of Universal Principles of Typography, this one is very different: a coffee table book in the spirit of 8 Faces that celebrates beautiful type specimen graphics.

#Typography Tip Tuesday! Know your numerals (or figures). There are 4 different kinds and a well made font should contain all of them:

• Proportional lining
• Proportional oldstyle
• Tabular lining
• Tabular oldstyle

Top 2 rows: Proportional numerals have varying glyph widths, just like most letters and symbols. Oldstyle numerals’ letterforms have ascender- and descender-like designs.

Bottom 2 rows: Tabular numerals have a consistent width.

#Typography Tip Tuesday: if your font has different grades, use them! At first glance, grade might appear similar to weight, but whereas weight makes parts of the text look different, grade is helps maintain consistency.

Image 1: Unlike weight (except in multiplexed fonts), grade doesn’t affect the overall width. Typeface: Roboto Flex.

Image 2: On screens, light-on-dark text will appear slightly bloated, so switch to a lighter grade when designing for Dark Mode. Typeface: Tabac.
