Does anyone have any recommendations for an alternative to DeployHQ? i.e. a service that can take my GitHub repo and automatically deploy it to my server?

I’m sure there are command line / dev-centric tools for this, but please bear in mind that I am a caveman and need a GUI. 🫠

Very, very happy to announce that the foreword to my forthcoming book has been written by none other than Ellen Lupton, whose book Thinking with Type (just one of so many she’s written) had a profound effect on me when my interest was first piqued by this whole typography thing. It’s called Universal Principles of Typography and it’s going to be published by Quarto in spring 2024.

#Typography Tip Tuesday! Friend or… faux?

Sure, a faux italic never killed anyone, but it’ll make your client look like they don’t care, and is that a message they want to send?

Img 1: Note the true italic (right) is a radically different drawing to the faux, slanted version (left).

Img 2: The faux bold appears too soft and rounded, with letterforms clashing due to the inadequate spacing.

Img 3: The faux small caps appear too thin, as they’re shrunken versions of the regular uppercase forms.

Giving #throwbackthursday a try again. Back in 2010 (good lord, that was 14 years ago!), I worked on the branding and the website for the very first Brooklyn Beta, alongside Cameron Koczon, @shiflett, and @jontan. I also spoke at the event. Crucially, Mark Caneso let us try out the then-unreleased beta version of his typeface Quatro Slab, which I always cite as a reason to reach out to type designers, which can often lead to friendship and more collabs. Really fun times.

For this week’s #throwbackthursday, here’s my Typekit (now Adobe Fonts) homepage design from almost exactly 10 years ago. If I remember correctly, this was expanding upon a design @weightshift had made before, and I was just changing the hero area and nav to advertise the then-new desktop font syncing (up until that point, Typekit was purely a web font service). I’ve been thinking a lot about my days at Adobe recently. Good people. Good times.

Frustratingly, I’ve just had a forthcoming client project postponed until next year, which means I’ve suddenly got some availability from early November until the Christmas holidays.
