I want to be really excited about the Year of the Dragon but like previously I got SO excited about the Year of the Rat and we all know how THAT turned out
Been getting this sense lately that the fediverse may be thinning out a bit, and in parallel getting a sense people I know are finally jumping to "bluesky" in numbers.
Trying to figure out exactly at what point I decide I'm willing to create a feed over there. My position has been "I'll post there when I don't have to use their servers to do it", but I continue to suspect this will literally never happen because their protocol is designed to look like federation without being ever federatable
@mcc the amount of ppl i’ve seen talking about making a bluesky account while really not wanting to actually use bluesky makes me feel like some sort of metaphor for broader capitalism but i’m not sure i can exactly suss it out
@mcc i sincerely cannot believe that any modern company backed with VC money would ever choose an open protocol instead of one that lets them lock in customers.
@mcc i feel like rss is useful as a tool for making the kind of experience i want but by itself is kind of... not great, especially with the way its implemented (both readers and the way websites publish to the feeds rn) is very far from what i want still
@mcc it does, thank goodness, but idk why it ever changed in the first place or why it wants to claim that its somehow a 'microsoft edge' html file specifically (which it also says under the setting for .xml files before you change it)
@mcc i suspect that what happened is that before all html files defaulted to open in whatever your default browser was; and that some recent update changed them to open in edge by default, without changing my default browser
@mcc ie, the only change i personally made before this was to my default browser, which microsoft took to meant i don’t actually care what files open in
Went out to the drugstore and I was so so hype because it's FINALLY December 26 and for the first time since October I could go to the drugstore without hearing Christmas music. Walked in. The piped in music was a lady singing "I Believe In Santa Claus". There is no escape
one of my fave types of guys on letterboxd is “movie guy who watches mostly horror and really artsy films but also watches hallmark specials with his wife and still reviews them sincerely”
Hey, I've got a great idea. I'm going to raise funds and use them to buy up a very large number of [amusement parks / video game companies / other business type here]. Then, about 18 months later, suddenly all the loans/investment rounds I took out are going to start expecting their money back, and I will not be able to pay them because my new companies make money, but only at a relatively slow rate. So to save money, I will close down most/all of the businesses I bought. https://www.gamedeveloper.com/business/embracer-reportedly-cuts-staff-at-3d-realms-slipgate
i SAY “i want to install all my updates manually” but what i MEAN is “i want there to be fewer updates,” not “i want to have to update everything on my computer every time i sign in”
Trying to find a record of a specific thing that I know for a fact happened on June 23, 2020 but I don't remember on which medium or messaging service. Now going through every communication system I've ever used and trying to scroll back to June 2020. Clicking the scroll wheel and slamming the mouse to the top of the screen and just waiting for the infinite scroll to get where I want it
