More rambling about problems with doing "bluesky" outside the blue sky walled garden (https://mastodon.social/@mcc/112340957577471735). Giving this one its own thread because I'm not sure I'm being fair.
So now I have a PDS working, the first thing I'm experimenting with is: Since I have my own data hosting, can I use this to make posts that are longer than 300 characters? And if I do, what happens? I want to crosspost from Mastodon; mastodon.social allows 500 characters.
@mcc at one of the branches i work at, they have two bins in the book drop with these names, and a matching keychain on the key to open the door to them
wrote an uncharacteristically long (and spoiler-y) review about a movie that I felt totally out with the other reviews on letterboxd about, so I figured I should post it where more ppl might actually see it:
@mcc i liked it quite a bit but it's definitely not as good as Corbijn's other spy movie, A Most Wanted Man, while having a lot of the same things people didn't like about that movie
Basically ideally everyone would stop using Twitter except Paul Graham and Marc Andressen and then there's be no one to screenshot Paul Graham and Marc Andressen posts and post them where I'd see them
Strange science facts: In nuclear power, functional nuclear fission reactors were constructed as early as 1942, yet nuclear fusion remains elusive and can only be achieved for short periods. In jazz, on the other hand, jazz fusion was invented in the early 70s, and jazz fission remains purely theoretical even today
It's amazing how much difference a six minute average time to catch a bus vs a sixteen minute average time to catch a bus makes to outright loving vs hating a public transit system
@mcc a well funded and well operated transit system is such a huge convenience i have to imagine that’s why most cities have done what they can to kneecap them
Anyway I am back from Texas with honestly less psychic damage than I expected and also rather more physical damage to my personal possessions than I at any point expected
There's a trilogy by Alastair Reynolds with the slightly clunky name of "The Prefect Dreyfus Emergencies". The books are named Aurora Rising, Elysium Fire, & Machine Vendetta. Oddly, the Toronto public library has only the second two, not the first, in its ebook app.
I think I've managed to convince myself this is because there's an unrelated book from a decade later named "Aurora Rising". I think some person or program convinced themselves they were the same book, so they didn't need both.
@mcc i mean, im definitely interested in the first just bc most so far i've liked most of what you've recommended, but also books with cool cute girls are hard for me to resist
@mcc im wondering if the broader art and design worlds will end up in a similar situation to where industries like fashion and jewelry already are, where plagarism is essentially an expectation for the designers working there
