How do you pronounce “glibc”? (as in the GNU C Library)

Edit: I consider “gee” as pronounced with a soft G, so you might also write it as “jee.”

Coastal US people do you use any special words for a sea fog that rolls inland during the summer? I grew up calling it haar but not sure if people in America call it that. A hermitforhire grew up in a landlocked state and can’t help me with this.

kboyd,
@kboyd@phpc.social avatar

@napalousa @Magess i call it "marine fog" or, once, "the fog that ate victoria"

Edit: and "pea soup" fog

Exciting #sailing day on the water, but any day you're on the radio with Coast Guard is exciting. Happily, it was more exciting for somebody else and we were merely standing by to render assistance. Didn't finish the race, but we didn't break anything, didn't lose anyone.

Back down the lake, our club's education director was missing for half an hour, but had been picked up by a jet ski almost immediately. She was safe, the person we assisted was safe, and we got in a pre cold front sail.

@mikej Yeah,
it was a nasty gusty afternoon. Two kayakers went missing here in Victoria. https://globalnews.ca/news/10442054/missing-kayakers-search-u-s-waters/

If one bit weighed 1 milligram, and someone weighed all of the .DS_Store files ever made, would the resulting mass be enough to generate a black hole? I think yes.

kboyd,

Astrophysicist: "I don't think you understand how truly massive black holes are."

Me: "I don't think you've glanced at a macOS filesystem during a backup."

Something that puzzles me - people who switch from one DAM to another, like Lightroom to Capture One: None of them have compatible sidecar formats, so what happens to your entire history of edits? Do you just convert everything to JPG and "lock them in" to a look forever? Or just start over and leave the old images behind?

#photography

kboyd,
@kboyd@phpc.social avatar

@shacker When I switched from ACDSee to Lightroom, after leaving ACD Systems, I started over. But I still miss some of those edits.

And I'm considering checking out Darktable or similar. I use the Lightroom catalog approach, archived by year, rather than sidecar files, so those edits might end up being trapped in 10+ years of LR catalog files.

It might be refreshing.

kboyd,
@kboyd@phpc.social avatar

@shacker I haven't taken the leap yet; planning to do that later this year as an experimental phase in my photo project

If they ever do a fourth Austin Powers film, they should do it from Dr Evil's perspective (as has been hinted at over the years), but also as a partial reboot with austin being recast & bringing a different tone to the character. Dr Evil would then spend the film incredibly confused by the casting change, until the real Austin shows up to get Dr Evil's inevitable evil plan monologue back on track - and then he and New Austin foil it.

Is there an explainer for what is actually the point of all the AI stuff? For crypto I was fine ignoring it as it was stupid on its face. I would ignore AI too if it were just hyped by tech companies and VCs, but it seems to dominate everywhere. I’m in a “CTO club” and it’s nonstop AI.

Internet search on this topic is, even via Kagi, tons of SEO nonsense.

Don’t tell me about it writing emails or code. I understand that part. What actual problems is it supposed to solve?

kboyd,
@kboyd@phpc.social avatar

@davetron5000 The current gen of LLM-based so-called AIs exist to solve three pernicious problems:

A) Progress on climate change
B) Progress on employment improvements and protections
C) Stagnating profits of growth-at-all-costs capitalism

Question for Canadian . Are there Canada-located masto.host type services for creation of scalable independent Mastodon domains?

kboyd,
@kboyd@phpc.social avatar

@chris not that I know of, but I considered starting one on a domain I bought. Mastodon/activitypub stubs at stub.social.

kboyd,
@kboyd@phpc.social avatar

@chris I don't think there's much in the way of profit for that. And there's definitely a lot of time & frustration in store for admining such a service.

IMHO, it would have to be a co-op. Or a co-op of co-ops. Some sort of non-profit-like entity. And I don't have any energy to spare these days.

Most entertaining way to deal with the IT FOLLOWS (2014) entity that stalks you and murders you unless you sexually transmit the curse to someone else: fuck the President.

Harder with some Presidents than others, but if you can pull it off, the Secret Service is gonna have the time of their lives. Eventually maybe they call in the Marines. Finally they send the President up in Air Force One and we find out if the entity can fly a fighter jet. This is the sequel we need!

kboyd,

@yaypie never seen it, but isn't it more likely that the entity is itself a (former) president?

By which I mean JFK, of course.

I once had to explain to someone what a specific bit of vintage furniture was for: a bedside table with a door closing on a large, half-metre cubed storage space. (It was for storing a chamber pot, and they were very common when houses had no interior toilets). I think we’ll be there soon with telephone tables, those half-desks with a side seat, for under the phone in the corridor
