it bothers me when people give physical meaning to the boundaries of the observable universe, like, that's how wide the universe is, or it's different beyond those bounds. we can't know, but a random chunk centered on earth probably isn't meaningful. it seems more likely to be "tiled" infinitely in all directions, which is comforting in a weird way.

eobrain,

What I haven't quite wrapped my head around is that the distance to the edge of the observable universe is 46.5 billion light-years but the universe is only 13.8 billion years old

Naively I through the edge of the observable universe would be 13.8 billion light years away

But I guess that does not take into account the expansion of the universe

I've been undecided about whether Bluesky or Mastodon/Fediverse has the better architecture

Stacked vs instance-based

But this example of innovation (a gift-article feed) uses Bluesky's ability to disaggregate the feed algorithms and shows a big advantage for Bluesky:

eobrain,

Yeah, not typical monetization, but I don't think it's quite the opposite

Presumably paywalled publishers have made a calculated decision that providing gift links is a net positive for their business, maybe by making the subscription more valuable for subscribers, and maybe with the extra benefit of implicit advertising of subscriptions via influential users

So this feed would be a little bonus on top of the already existing business value of gift links

I mean… they have to make money somehow?

eobrain,

Though the board's Opinion only is against behavioral advertising that requires tracking

Contextual advertising would still be OK, so it's still possible to earn revenue, just not as much

This is the case for Google Search: if you are in Europe and reject consent for non-essential cookies, then searching still works fine

You may see ads, but related just to the context of your current search

Reminder, to allow your posts to flow out onto the Fediverse go to

Settings > Account > Fediverse sharing

Only about a fifth of the people I follow on Threads have Fediverse sharing turned on

(That foiled my plan to use my Mastodon client instead of Threads to follow Threads people)

The push for regulation is gaining momentum. The EU's proposed AI Act, with its risk-based approach, would be legally binding. Meanwhile, the US is lagging behind, with NIST's AI Risk Management Framework and the White House Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights offering important guidance, but lacking the legal force of the EU's approach.

OK, I just turned on sharing to the Fediverse.

Now, I'll pop over to my Mastodon account at @eob to see if I can see this post there.
