Coming to terms with no longer having privacy and control over my technology

I miss the days of VHS and DVD shelfs in homes, for example. If you bought the tapes and had them in your home, no corporate entity could alter those tapes without your consent, monitor how many times you watch them, sell your data to whomever they please without your knowledge, roll out new mandatory conditions to a ‘user...

eramseth,

Speaking as someone who has gone through several of them from several brands… All the robot vacuums are scams anyway.

The batteries wear out quickly. They are consumable parts not covered by warranty.

The brushes wear out quickly. Also consumable parts not covered by warranty.

The filters eventually become clogged and render the device unusable without replacement. Also consumable and not covered by warranty.

And honestly I would be willing to put up with all of the above if they did a good job vacuuming, but they don’t and won’t.

eramseth,

This probably factors into the resurgence of vinyl.

eramseth,

While I agree with your sentiment… millionaires and billionaires should not be lumped together. This conflation is actually a super useful tool for the billionaires (and mega millionaires) to use when convincing the middle and lower economic classes to vote in their favor.

Realistically, millionaire today basically just means homeowner. As ridiculous as it sounds, a million dollars is not an “enormous” sum of money in today’s world.

Billionaire is something different entirely.

Better to say “super wealthy” or something like that.

HDMI stream live processing?

I’m getting tired of the extremely loud ads on that don’t seem to be subject to the old TV broadcasting laws that prevent them from being blasted 10db louder than the actual content. Wondering if there’s stuff out there that would let me take the hdmi stream from my Apple TV or other streaming source, and do ad detection...

eramseth,

You could try an hdmi audio extractor and pipe that into a raspberry pi with the appropriate hat and run a real-time volume normalization dsp then run from the pi to your sound system or BACK into some hdmi encoder.

Probably run into major issues with delayed audio though.

I'm looking for a privacy respecting vacuum robot

I’m looking for a vacuum robot preferably under 500€ and with a cleaning station. My main concern is that most robot vacuum providers seem to need to be connected to the internet. Are there any providers that either don’t need that, where I can block the internet connection or any other way not getting a spy in my home?...

eramseth,

I’ve had several brands. I’m sure none were privacy respecting. But beyond that they’re all crap. They all break down and end up requiring near constant maintenance. They also don’t do a very good job of vacuuming.

Better off getting a half decent vacuum (extra points if it uses bags because… Bagless is fucking stupid) and for little clean up jobs get a manual sweeper like some restaurants use.

eramseth,

Not sure if it’s a factor for you but roku tries to phone home a lot more than anything else on my network (or perhaps my firewall just catches it more than other devices and apps). Otherwise roku is pretty good.

Nvidia shield tv is better though. It’s the best set top box. Made even better by replacing the default launcher/ home screen (android TV default launcher now has 2/3 or more of the screen taken up by ads or “recommended content” which is just ads).

eramseth,

That’s what I’m using now and I like it.

eramseth,

Yes that’s a concern with all of them, Apple TV included.

eramseth,

Feels like what happened with android tv.

eramseth,

Destiny 2 right? They’ve had BattlEye on there for quite a while now. Kinda sucks but there’s no way around it.

eramseth,

15 years is a woefully short time frame to look at in a conflict that goes back hundreds if not thousands of years…

eramseth,

I mean I’m not gonna waste my time trying to educate you on this but you’re wrong. Go read some books, watch some lectures, listen to some podcasts.

eramseth,

Yes surely 1917-1948 was a time of peaceful bliss…

eramseth, (edited )

WW I was over a hundred years ago. My point stands that only considering 15 years is a very myopic view on the region.

Can THIS conflict he traced back to biblical times? (By the way, it may even be selling yourself short to stop at Moses… but that leads to the question of how back do you draw the line of relevance…) no of course not. Realistically, while I’m inclined to look back to the late 1800s and early 1900s, there’s no one alive today that was alive at that time. 1 or 2 generations later can you expect everyone to forget the events of the past? Maybe not.

It’s a really classic example (maybe THE classic example) of violence begetting violence. Unfortunately the violent tendencies and hatred are institutionalized. It’s clearly not an easy problem to solve, but I’m fairly certain that violent terrorist attacks against civilians is not in the running for a solution.

EDIT: just to add, going back a thousand years takes us to the time of the crusades, during and after which there were Arab attacks driving out non-arabs… and Arab attacks against other Arab factions (not blind to the fact that all Arabs are not a monolithic group).

Going back a little further you have a history of violence and discrimination against the Jews and Arabs (and pagans and other people) by the Roman’s. You can see how hard it is to find a stopping point in the history of violence in the region.

So yes while the CURRENT conflict probably only tracks back a hundred or so years, the history of conflict in general in the region goes back thousands of years (probably 4 thousand years but im not sure there are even stories, much less even somewhat reliable historical accounts that go back much further than that).

eramseth,

Hey I actually have a bellman without the gauge.

First off it works fine. Or maybe it doesn’t. My latte art is terrible. (“Look baby I made you a cloud”)

Second, you can just heat it with the valve open. When it starts steaming you’ll hear it. Close the valve then wait a little while. I usually wait until the safety valve goes then turn the heat down to medium but i dont see why you couldnt just sort of leave it on high and start using it straight away. Hasn’t failed me yet. I know at least one other person who does the same.

Using with a flair 58 by the way. If you start the bellman first, then a gooseneck kettle, then turn on the 58, usually (depending how much water you put in the bellman) you can pull your espresso just as the bellman is up to pressure and from there in just an extra few minutes between espresso and latte.

…And even though my latte art skills are lacking, the flavor and texture of the lattes I’m making are great.

eramseth,

Theres also something called URL cleaner. It just literally cleans the URL AFAIK (no virus total or anything). Ita available on f-droid and presumably the play store.

eramseth,

I will always recommend baratza. If you can spring for Encore ESP it will future proof you in case you want to go down the path of espresso. Otherwise the Encore will def serve you well.

eramseth,

Just to elaborate on why recommend Baratza products… they are good products to begin with but also easily user-serviceable / repairable / upgradable. Also their customer support is top notch. That’s not to say you should expect them to break, mind you.

I think you’ll see similar sentiment in almost any review of them that you see.

On the other hand if you want to go cheap, the Cuisinart burr grinder is probably the best you can do sub-$100. It will be good (but not great) for anything but espresso I think. www.cuisinart.com/shopping/appliances/…/DBM-8P1/

Edit: when it’s time for the drip maker I highly recommend the breville precision. It’s pricy but worth it. If it’s out of price range just try to get something that’s good cup certified… sca.coffee/certified-home-brewer
