I’m okay with this decision because I want @packagist to succeed, but, damn, just can’t get first class support anywhere.

@ramsey @packagist seems they dropped the planned Python support, too.

https://github.com/github/roadmap/issues/94

I'm now super curious what "higher priority" items they're working on. PHP and Python support would've been huge.

After finally sitting through Matrix Resurrections (it literally took me 4 attempts) I just ... don't get it.

The first film was deep. A pastor literally used it for over a year of sermon series. So many layers. Second and Third were ... good. Not great, but still a solid and well-wrapped story.

Revisiting the world felt like a needless nostalgia-based cash grab. Kudos to the team who did it (returning actors were solid) but boo on the studio for forcing it to exist. Wasn't necessary.

In high school, my "career planning" teachers told us the best barometer of future earnings was education. They benchmarked it as follows:

  • diploma/GED - $25k
  • Bachelor's degree - $35k
  • Master's degree - $45k
  • Doctorate - $100k

I never questioned their sources, but this was what drove me to declare my major early before I'd even been accepted to undergrad.

I'm so glad they were wrong.

ericmann,
@ericmann@tekton.network avatar

Even adjusted for inflation this would be:

  • diploma/GED - $42k
  • Bachelor's - $59k
  • Master's - $75k
  • Doctorate - $168k

I did multiple bachelors degrees and a masters because I couldn't find work and staying in school meant I could defer loan repayment. Still, my first paid job post graduation was ... $12k.

Thank God I've moved beyond that. My family appreciates how fortunate we've been in the time since.

ericmann,
@ericmann@tekton.network avatar

@ramsey That honestly might've been where they pulled the numbers.

ericmann,
@ericmann@tekton.network avatar

I was fortunate enough to double my salary each time I changed roles for the first few years in tech. $12k became $25k with one job change. Then $55k with the next. The next change was to $75k. Still not double ... But I was suddenly so "obscenely highly paid" that even my parents took notice.

I thank everyone I know in tech for opening those opportunities for me and helping me get there. Especially since I have 0 formal training in software engineering.

I learned from books. From blogs. From conferences like . From other developers who were kind enough to put up with my annoying questions over email.

I've grown into rules where I've managed people - at its height, 6 separate teams of over 30 individual contributors and 4 managers.

I've managed highly resilient and scalable websites and written code running on literally millions of servers. It's the kind of impact and reach I only dreamed about as a kid.

ericmann,
@ericmann@tekton.network avatar

So when people ask me "why bother" with helping folks in code school. Or leveling junior devs. Or writing a blog or a book. Or speaking at a conference on a language I haven't used professionally in years ...

I just smile.

I bother because someone else first bothered to help me.

@ramsey I have family offended I make more than they did now than they did after a full career (i.e. their top salary before they retired). And other happy I've found something that suits me after my early years of job/career bouncing.

Teacher. No, lawyer. No, research scientist. No, political organizer. No, marketer. No, salesman. Ok, fine, maybe engineer...

ericmann,
@ericmann@tekton.network avatar

@ramsey @JosephLeedy I have degrees in physics, mathematics, political science, and global marketing.

I'm a software engineer that specializes in cyber security, machine learning, and ephemeral/cloud infrastructure. My degrees do not apply and none of these fields were even available as options for me when I entered college in the first place.

As is tradition for me, I get home from traveling and grab myself a California Burrito 🌯. No one makes these like we do in SoCal. Already looking forward to 2024. The big question now is, where?

ericmann,

@ian @maxtappenden boo on Vegas.

Fireworks in space? Really? Really?

Really?

ericmann,

@ramsey I wasn't the biggest fan of Raffi in the first two seasons, but after this one ... yeah, I could totally get on board.

ericmann,
@ericmann@tekton.network avatar

@ramsey Yeah, I absolutely loved that part.

I do have to ask ... did you catch the post credit scene? What did you think of our special guest appearance? ;-)

Amazing how you don't notice how much stress something is causing you until that stress is removed & you physically feel the load-off.

Was nervous about my income tax return due to a great year of self-employed income. Got it back today & I owe less than I had set aside, so that's a relief. 😌

ericmann,
@ericmann@tekton.network avatar

@syntaxseed Have been there myself. Sadly with a less happy resolution.

Whenever I do self-employed/contracting work I do the whole estimated tax payment thing otherwise I forget to hold onto anything for tax time ...

Now that I'm finally pencils down on PHP Cookbook (pre-order available now: https://amzn.to/3V3ExHE), I have time to get back to blogging 🙂

Oh how I've missed publishing things myself on a website. I might want to refresh the design a tiny bit ... but in the meantime, any topic requests?

Today was my last day at Vacasa.

The time between leaving one job and starting another always feels ... weird. It's not like vacation where I'm intentionally choosing to have nothing work related on my schedule. It's that there's no work to be on my schedule in the first place.
