To any of my friends who didn't already know, the leftover Oscar elePHPants from php[tek] 2024 are on sale to the general public. There is a very limited supply, and they are going quickly. They will ship out June 1st https://www.phparch.com/swag/php-tek-2024-oscar-plush-elephpant/

Hey, @grmpyprogrammer, I've really adopted the home row mod you turned me onto some time ago. Last week at php[tek], it was great seeing you by the way, I missed not having it on my MacBook Pro laptop and couldn't figure out how to do it. I noticed you were using a MacBook. Do you have the home row mod configured on it and is there something you can point me to to learn how? Being a non-QMK keyboard I assume it's not possible, but I thought I would ask.

It’s good to see @ramsey share his personal discovery that when he was looking for a job nobody gave a shit about all the amazing OSS contributions he made.

eric,
@eric@phparch.social avatar

@grmpyprogrammer @radmen @ramsey @john it's streaming now for free at https://phptek.tv. I'll ask @ramsey if he's cool that we publish it to YouTube later

AI and photography have been on my mind lately. I grew up where photos captured history. Images of historical events would be looked at, and new things would be discovered. Fake and doctored images weren't that difficult to identify. Now, with digital photography and AI, it's tough to figure out if things have been added or removed. I find myself wondering if we are at risk of losing those small details from our past.

Why do PHP developers make great friends? Because they always have the best 'array' of jokes! 😂

@john @eric During PHPUgly last night I mentioned "home row" mods but YouTube chat wouldn't share any comment I made with a link. Here's a link to the article about it and why people are trying it https://precondition.github.io/home-row-mods

I had to replace the controller on my Advantage2 LF with an open source one so I could use QMK...so I could use home row mods.

eric,
@eric@phparch.social avatar

@grmpyprogrammer @john Yeah, I came across this last night when I was trying to figure out what you were talking about. Now, I am very tempted to give this a try. I’ve always hated the “reach” to the Control key. Actually, very much like I disliked the reach to Escape key until I figured out the remap trick with Cap Lock. This is very tempting to try out. How do you like it?

eric,
@eric@phparch.social avatar

@grmpyprogrammer @john OK, @grmpyprogrammer, I could use some advice on this whole “home row mod.” I am curious if you went with the GASC/◆⎇⇧⎈ setup and, if so, how it’s working out for you. I am considering swapping Command and Control or just moving Command to the Control spot and shifting everything left. I am wondering if you see any benefit with the original layout.

Looks like there was something a little extra left under the Christmas tree 🎄, a fourth track for @phptek. A working version of the schedule is up on the site for those interested. Get your tickets today, it is shaping up to be a great conference. https://tek.phparch.com

eric, to random
@eric@phparch.social avatar

It's Friday, and @john and I got a little punchy putting together the questions for @tek speakers. One question we added is 'Who do you like more?'. Their options are me, John, or 'I don't know who these people are.' Got this in Discord from @scottkeckwarren 🤣

@eric@phparch.social avatar

I mentioned this over the weekend, but it was in reply to another post, so I wanted to make sure I gave everyone enough notice. We are sending out the first round of emails for accepted talks for @phptek either today or tomorrow. I say this to give everyone notice that the cheap "Blind Early Bird" ticket pricing will be coming to an end once we publish who the speakers are. So be sure to get your ticket today to the best PHP Community focused conference.

One thing is for sure, filling the speaker slots for @phptek 2024 is not going to be difficult. SO MANY GREAT TALKS!!

I suck at DB queries, but I've been watching a lot of videos from @aarondfrancis at and it's been helping me understand why I'm so bad at it. Great video on joins. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hsl47I3svw

These would be some great talks for @tek 2024 😜

eric, to random
@eric@phparch.social avatar

I've intentionally not bothered you all with pleas to submit talks to @phptek 2024. The turnout of submissions has been great. But time is also running out, and in case any of you weren't aware, you have only a couple of weeks left to submit your talks https://tek.phparch.com/speakers

I need book recommendations for software related books to buy via company budget.

Something in the wider area of and more

And also further recommendations on how and where to spend remaining education budget 👀

eric,
@eric@phparch.social avatar

@Skoop @Flyingmana @editor I was telling @john how that book activated my PTSD from my time working for a large Enterprise company. The book is so spot on. John said he had read a follow up called "The Unicorn Project" which I haven't gotten to yet.

gabidavila, to python

Friends, now that people are aggregating together, which conferences should I keep an eye on for submissions? My content goes beyond databases fundamentals, language agnostic. I can cover automation, schema tracking, observability, etc.

Also Vector databases.

eric,
@eric@phparch.social avatar

@gabidavila @ramsey @Crell You can still purchase a ticket and join in on all the fun 😁

In all honesty, and this is for everyone, if you are thinking of purchasing a ticket and work isn't paying for it, I would suggest doing so very soon. First round of accepted emails will be going out tomorrow. Once we have all the speakers slots filled with acknowledgement from the speakers, the Blind Early bird will end.
