Oh please do not let lemmy become a non-stop ad for things disney has ruined.

Don't get me wrong, reddit has been the worst for about 10-12 years now and keeps getting worse every year, but as long as we're talking about this mysterious 3%.

How much traffic does that 3% account for? That's the real metric. I assume it's more than the avg user.

Also, what is an avg user? Someone that just wants a crowd-sourced opinion once a month is not. Is it someone that just looks at the front page and moves on? Does the avg user post? Do they lurk? Surely they're not mods.

I realize all these questions are moot, as reddit has been utter garbage since a little before fatpeoplehate got taken down.

From what I remember, jailbait getting taken down was either what they did right before or right after reddit got sold to whoever. And then, iirc, in 2018-ish they got bought by a Chinese company.

Annihilation and Hereditary are way too high. The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the original Dawn of the Dead, and some early Cronenberg would be in my top tear. Bone Tomahawk is rad, glad that's on your list. The new Candyman is freaking great also.

Agree with The Void. Probably the best Comsic horror movie out there. Also the Color from Space with Nic Cage is terrifying.

I just don't think they're classics. I don't think they'll stand the test of time. Their stylistic approach will be passe in a few years.

But movies like Dawn of the Dead and Texas Chainsaw Massacre have this rawness that makes them feel more... Idk, scary.

Hereditary's plot was a mess. It seemed like the writers just cobbled a bunch of shorter stories together. I loved the very end even though it made no sense, but the rest of it just seemed like it kept playing the gross-out card. But it did have a good, creepy vibe.

Annihilation I liked, but NP really weighs it down. They needed a bigger personality for that role. I just don't think it will be talked about in 10 years, and we'll still be talking about Dawn of the Dead and TCM.

BTW, Annihilation is also a book, and it has two sequels. The 2nd book is mostly a bore, but the third is amazing and actually explains how the mysterious zone was created.

I don't know if it's strictly military, but if it was more militaristic, it probably would have made it better:

The sequel trilogy. What an embarrassing mess. Somehow they made 3 movies almost as bad as the prequels.

Marvel too - they haven't made a decent movie since Infinity War, and even that couldn't hold a candle to ol' feelings-hurtin' Whedon's original Avengers (I'm not counting spider-man movies in this since they're shared with other creative forces that somehow manage to make good movies despite all the super obvious studio-ruining going on over there).

And no doubt we're all holding our breath in fear that the new Indiana Jones with a dementia-ridden Ford will be so cringey it'll ruin the others (not crystal skull, nothing could make that utter bore of a movie worse)

Ya know, every month Amazon brings back old, forgotten, but consistently good movies on Prime Video. I'd say about 95% of them are more watchable and interesting than the new Disney property's attempts. This is why they need a military to occupy them and make them make good movies. Send in the National Guard and the movie is not done until you have something coherent and enjoyable.

Wanting to discover some new Metal bands to rock out with, and also looking for some “easier” or harsh-lite songs. What metal music have you been obsessed with lately?

I’ve had a fun time over the last few months getting into metal music and its subgenres. I feel pretty basic in that my favorites remain Black Sabbath, Metallica and Iron Maiden. In my exploration I’ve learned that I tend to gravitate towards New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal / British Heavy Metal stuff. In fact, I found...

@erogenouswarzone@lemmy.ml avatar

You probably won’t like these suggestions, but for the ppl who are into more experimental stuff:

Harvey Milk, yes, a band named after the first openly-gay politician is like a cross between modest mouse, king missile and a metallica if they had a good drummer and were more metal. Unfortunately, their best album, Life… the best game in town, is not on Spotify. I bought it on Bandcamp, but it’s worth it.

Godspeed you black emperor, while not strictly considered metal (closer to mathrock), they have mastered this really creepy post-apocalyptic vibe, mostly on F# A# infinity. The writer of the movie 28 days later listened to this album while working on that movie, and he used part of it in the movie, so you might even recognize it.

Portal is an Australian band that achieves what many metal bands fail laughably at: being scary. They have a cosmic horror spin on the genre. A guttural, disgusting, eldritch orgy of a mess, but it’s amazing if you’re into that sort of thing.

For real. Reddit has been shit since 2016, and every year it gets worse and worse. It's nice to be here, I haven't heard one mention of a Disney product since joining!

I don't know who spez is. I'm gathering from all the posts (s)he is some sort of reddit representative, and everybody hates them. Can you expand on this please?

erogenouswarzone,
@erogenouswarzone@lemmy.ml avatar

What? Who lied about what? Can you expand on this, I have no idea what it means other than knowing Apollo is probably referring to the Reddit app.

I was 13 when Windows '95 came out. And there was so much hype around it. There were commercials on TV and newspapers and radio - seriously everywhere. And I remember using it for the first time and being so excited and then thinking "...stfw? How is this different than 3.1?" And realizing the OS doesn't really mean anything. But then we got a gateway with a gaming package a few months later, and that blew my nips off pretty good.

erogenouswarzone,
@erogenouswarzone@lemmy.ml avatar

Car-ware is the absolute worst. I remember reading an article on Hacker News 10 years ago saying they should just be a blank canvas that our cellphone decides what goes on it.

erogenouswarzone,
@erogenouswarzone@lemmy.ml avatar

I remember switching to Android because you could replace the battery and expand storage, and those were huge selling points. But now my phone has none of those things. Although I guess a lot of stuff is in the cloud.

erogenouswarzone,
@erogenouswarzone@lemmy.ml avatar

For everyone.

Reddit just got worse the more people used it.

erogenouswarzone,
@erogenouswarzone@lemmy.ml avatar

I'm really hoping this is too advanced for 90% of Reddit users. Reddit is such a shithole compared to 10 years ago.
