Customer: we don't like your networking equipment you put in to connect all your stuff. Chose something else.
Us: it's our standard stuff, well proven, and we can manage it. But ok. What do you want instead?
C: we don't know. But Gartner say it's no good.
Us: [Gartner don't know an ass from an elbow]
Us: no seriously, what DO you want?
C: just replace it.
Us: how about we connect to your network and then you manage it?
C: no.

Sigh.

@fitheach @simon_brooke @giantspacesquid do any of you sell your trees?

Thinking of getting a piece of land cleared to convert into a pasture with fruit trees. That means removing 300 dense-stand silver firs; 40 years old, average 40 cm breast height diameter and 15m high.

The offer I've gotten is 5 Eur/tree, for thermal use. This is ~8% of what firewood goes for, or 10% of the equivalent cost in heating oil. But it saves me min. 5 years of work and still leaves me with 700 trees.

Thoughts?

I actually had to follow a youtube link to see what all the kerfuffle is about with the new iPad commercial.

Quite happy with how little of this stuff gets through my media channels.

I have an opening for an OT security person in the Cologne/Düsseldorf region of Germany.

You must be a FOSS aficionado who is willing to work on pushing a windows-based environment towards something from this millenium. Challenges are internal friction on the dev side and lack of knowledge of non-IT people.

You must be enthusiastic about industrial environments and heavy machinery.

EU citizen/work permit preferred, hybrid office/wfh. Relocation assistance. DM for details.

Colleague of mine would like to use Linux more, and one of the remaining obstacles were his two printers not working. Spent a couple of hours debugging (proprietary) drivers and always ended up with "communication error".

So finally grab a tcpdump, and lo and behold: the thing was giving ICMP denied for SNMP. Whisky Tango Foxtrott. Turns out the driver needs it to query the supplies levels and status and otherwise won't print. At all.

Enable in web interface, paper comes out.

Go figure.

Websearched a distant relative on a whim today, and happened onto instantcheckmate.com.

Holy smokes. Yinzes USians really don't give a crap about privacy, eh?

Within 5 minutes I had found not only his address and phone number but also his sister's and mom's, correctly identified his deceased father, and found their relocation history over the past 30 years. Without even so much as having to create an account. 😳🤔😳

Is anyone using Bitwarden in a large organization?

We currently use Keepass with about 5000 entries in 800 folders and subfolders. These represent geographically distributed customer sites.

Importing this into BW works, but the search functionality is super clunky and the dumbed-down interface is a pain to use. For example in the app a found entry is not listed with the collection it was found in. It is in the web UI, but the collection name is shortened unrecognizably.

Am I the only one finding it comical there is an antitrust case going on against Apple, where the smartphone market is divided 72% Android versus 28% iPhone?

Yet there is no such case against microsoft which according to its own numbers has >80% "market" share on the desktop?

My ISP has been popped. Customers just received an email that their customer-facing web is down and they're cleaning things up which will take a while.

Meanwhile they continue to do what's really important: transport bits from A to B.

Wonder which part of their business runs on windows and which one doesn't? Hopefully their billing system is in the latter part so they don't go bankrupt next month...

Don't let anyone tell you a is "high tech". Here's a Detroit Electric Model C from 1907, tested range of over 300 km and top speed of 32 km/h.

And would you look at those swivel seats in the plush salon! 👍

Side view of a black and green car with white rims. It looks a lot like a horse carriage but fully enclosed with large windows and low black hood and trunk.

$TopBoss is required to answer some stupid consulting outfit what we're doing with "AI", so we all had to name use cases (which we don't have). $Colleague pasted the question into chatgpt and sent back the answer.

I'm literally dying with laughter.

Anyone I know using rapid7 insight agent on their Linux boxen? Are your vulnerability scan reports also completely unusable, listing years old CVEs that have been patched long ago?

Looks yo me that they may beainyaing their vuln database with all the windows junk but the Linux side is just a "we are cross-platform" compliance feature. Or maybe I'm missing something?

Positively drowning in writing tick-the-box security documents. There's little as soul wrecking as writing docs you know nobody will read or follow, and that only serve to survive an audit. 🤮🤮🤮

Bonus points for working in an organization where nobody has even the most basic skills writing any sort of documentation.

Hm, or just plays dumb so they don't have to... 🤔🧐

So Atlassian's shenanigans mean our use of Confluence is coming to an end. IT is looking for a replacement but have no idea (no surprise). At least msft doesn't offer anything in this space yet. And no, sharepoint doesn't count, even for them.

Question: is anyone in the same situation and if so, what are you using as a Confluence replacement?

Bonus question: is using Gitlab pages even an option?

Boosts apprecisted. Thanks!

In today's "creative ways for windows to eff up" I'm sat in a teams call when all of a sudden my Bluetooth headset cuts out. Turning it off and on, re-pairing, adjusting volume - nothing. Both mic and speakers: dead as a doornail.

So switch over to the built-in laptop realtek audio and - dead. Nothing.

No matter what I try the thing will not emit or record a single sound, regardless of audio interface. Not even Alsa or Pipewire have managed to die so comprehensively, and inexplicably. 🧐🤮
