It's great to know that if you don't have bond money you can just request a different, smaller amount and pay that instead, I'm sure that is what happens for normal people all the time

I see a lot of posts that the current happenings with twitter, reddit, et.al. are destroying the Internet.

They're not. They're destroying platforms. Platforms that were designed as or deteriorated into walled gardens.

The Internet is a collection of protocols, designed to be open and interoperable.

These must be preserved. Screw the shitty platforms and the drugs they feed you.

"In the past, climate change deniers accused scientists of exaggerating the threat of global warming. However, the evidence that is now emerging from Antarctica and other parts of the world makes it very clear that scientists did not exaggerate. Indeed, they very probably underrated by a considerable degree the threat that now faces humanity"

Excellent summary of the Redhat/IBM situation from the Software Freedom Conservancy:

https://sfconservancy.org/blog/2023/jun/23/rhel-gpl-analysis/

I wasn't aware of most of the behind-the-scenes maneuvering over the years.

Maybe it is time to wean ourselves off RHEL after all. But then what?

I have an opening for an OT security person in the Cologne/Dรผsseldorf region of Germany.

You must be a FOSS aficionado who is willing to work on pushing a windows-based environment towards something from this millenium. Challenges are internal friction on the dev side and lack of knowledge of non-IT people.

You must be enthusiastic about industrial environments and heavy machinery.

PSA: if you run 36 or later, check to see if your service is running.

In a recent update they're still distributing a broken tcpcryptd.xml service definition file for which this over 4 year-old bug exists even though there are merge requests for fixes: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1716080

What's really awful is it causes firewalld to not start and you won't notice unless you monitor its state. Ouch. ๐Ÿค•

Does anyone have experience running Borg and Restic, preferably in a corporate environment?

I need to automatically backup a handful of servers to on-prem storage so GUIs and cloud-safe encryption aren't considerations.

Thanks!

In today's "creative ways for windows to eff up" I'm sat in a teams call when all of a sudden my Bluetooth headset cuts out. Turning it off and on, re-pairing, adjusting volume - nothing. Both mic and speakers: dead as a doornail.

So switch over to the built-in laptop realtek audio and - dead. Nothing.

No matter what I try the thing will not emit or record a single sound, regardless of audio interface. Not even Alsa or Pipewire have managed to die so comprehensively, and inexplicably. ๐Ÿง๐Ÿคฎ

I'm going to have to replace my eight year old MacBook; it's beyond the point I can afford to keep repairing it. I really want the next one to be the last laptop I ever buy: we cannot afford to keep generating e-waste.

My current thought is a @frameworkcomputer, mainly for repairability. Does anyone have alternative suggestions for a very long life laptop? Low power consumption is also desirable, UN*X/Linux of some kind required.

fedops,
@fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

@Glencoe we do that as well and IMHO it's a good way towards reduce-reuse-recycle. My next daily driver laptop will be a lease-return as well.

You can get a 3 year old refurbished device with warranty for about 1/3 new price. It will likely serve for the next 5 years or so, and aftermarket replacement batteries are readily available.

Colleague of mine would like to use Linux more, and one of the remaining obstacles were his two printers not working. Spent a couple of hours debugging (proprietary) drivers and always ended up with "communication error".

So finally grab a tcpdump, and lo and behold: the thing was giving ICMP denied for SNMP. Whisky Tango Foxtrott. Turns out the driver needs it to query the supplies levels and status and otherwise won't print. At all.

Enable in web interface, paper comes out.

Go figure.

Holy smokes. Yinzes USians really don't give a crap about privacy, eh?

Within 5 minutes I had found not only his address and phone number but also his sister's and mom's, correctly identified his deceased father, and found their relocation history over the past 30 years. Without even so much as having to create an account. ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ˜ณ

@fitheach @simon_brooke @giantspacesquid do any of you sell your trees?

Thinking of getting a piece of land cleared to convert into a pasture with fruit trees. That means removing 300 dense-stand silver firs; 40 years old, average 40 cm breast height diameter and 15m high.

The offer I've gotten is 5 Eur/tree, for thermal use. This is ~8% of what firewood goes for, or 10% of the equivalent cost in heating oil. But it saves me min. 5 years of work and still leaves me with 700 trees.

Thoughts?

@Tay0 fully covered in needles and a veritable death zone for lack of light and water.

No livestock as I don't live close by and go up every day.

Thinned out it would be good for grazing sheep or cows, but the idea for the orchard is to keep it completely wild with an intact ecosystem. Cut grass twice yearly to prevent bush growth. I want to invite a neighbor beekeeper to place his hives there to collect off the wildflowers and also the fruit trees.

fedops,

@simon_brooke i did it the other way around and was more concerned. A bit of additional oil in the two-smoke mix wouldn't hurt anything I think. But oiling the chain with petrol is probably unwise. ๐Ÿ˜€
