    I also often eat sweet snacks (the rather unhealthy kind, like fruit gums, chocolate, or cookies...) while I'm working at my desk. So at least I don't starve from lack of energy/sugar.

    I'm still looking for healthier options that have the same appeal (literally no work to prepare, just rip open the package. And they don't go bad quickly even if sitting around open and without cooling).

    Dried fruit (soft apricots, usually) is one example that I actually eat sometimes.

    Woman with ADHD here, yes I can relate :)

    I often ignore being hungry (because hyperfocus) until I'm so hungry that I just can't focus any more, and then of course I also can't focus on making food, and often already feel a bit nauseous... in that case, one thing that I can still eat, and that will make the nausea go away, is cucumber. So I try to always have a cucumber in the fridge for these moments.

    Wer macht denn hier (in ) seit Stunden diesen fies dröhnenden Lärm?
    Es ist echt kaum auszuhalten... mit NC-Kopfhörern ist es gerade so halbwegs erträglich (aber damit kann ich nicht auf der Seite liegen, und deswegen dann auch nicht einschlafen).
    Ich bin doch sicher nicht die einzige, die deswegen gerade so verzweifelt ist? Es ist 5 Uhr nachts, ich will einfach nur schlafen, und ich fühl mich so hilflos...

    I just wanted to be able to build a (static) website on the server where it's always been deployed anyway... and somehow I have now arrived at looking up how to install yum packages as a non-root user /o\
    (the answer: that is waaay too complicated to even try it when i'm so tired.)

    flauschzelle,
    @flauschzelle@chaos.social avatar

    Is there something that works like pdf2svg, but is available in a package manager that doesn't need root...? gem (ruby) would be my favorite in this case, but I'd also take suggestions in some other languages.

    flauschzelle,
    @flauschzelle@chaos.social avatar

    @blinry
    Hmm, seems rather complicated... are you really sure that this nix thing can install pdf2svg (and all the other stuff) without being root? On the second site that you linked, it says something about "root only" when it's used on linux... O.o

    flauschzelle,
    @flauschzelle@chaos.social avatar

    @blinry It also says that to install nix, it needs to create new users on your system, and do some other low-level stuff O.o
    I haven't tried, but I'm pretty sure that the server where I can't even install anything via the OS's built-in package manager... probably won't let me do that.

    I got a new T-shirt \o/

    I've been wanting a shirt with this design for soo long... and finally, about 11 years after the song was released, they offered it in their print-on-demand merch store :D

    (Funny coincidence: I'm actually going to an ASP concert tonight. But I'll probably not wear this shirt - the print wouldn't be visible under my velvet dress anyway)

    Battery drain and bluetooth didn't feel like a problem for me - I usually don't like bluetooth headsets, but for this use case it feels right. I have a helmet with built-in headset, only paired with my phone (there's also a separate hardware remote control for it, but I didn't get around to setting that up yet, because it needs an app). Having the phone's display on so I can see the map for navigation drains a lot more battery that bluetooth and phone calls do, in my experience.

    Hat irgendwer auf dem einen Schneidplotter dabei?

    Ich brauche für einen Workshop beim Camp ein paar Schablonen aus Stickerfolie - und habe gerade erfahren, dass der Plotter hier im Hackspace, mit dem ich das eigentlich morgen (bevor ich zum Camp losfahre) vorbereiten wollte, seit kurzem kaputt ist 😨

    (Ansonsten wäre auch hilfreich, wenn jemand den Kram vorher plotten und mir zum Camp mitbringen könnte)

    I still haven't found the right water bottle. I don't know why I'm being so picky about it either. The result is just that I don't have a water bottle at all.

    Putting perfect before good here really. Thanks, brain.

    This is more of a vent that anything else but hey, if you know now that fits these criteria, let me know:

    • made of metal
    • no complicated straw/spout mechanism that needs constant cleaning (Berlin water is very hard and creates calcification quickly)
    • red
    • 0.5 liters
    • a way to hook it to something, wither at the cap or the body

    Bonus points for:

    • ability to open and close with one hand
    • customisable, e.g. with engraving
    flauschzelle,
    @flauschzelle@chaos.social avatar

    @esther
    They usually don't sell single bottles, so you'd have to find some other people for a group order or something... but here's a shop with a lot of different bottles - for example this one, which is a bit bigger than 0.5 l, but could fit the other critera: https://www.highflyers.de/product_info.php/products_id/186504

    I've always wanted to build a compass belt, which indicates where north is using vibrations!

    Today, I got the very first prototype working: A setup that vibrates when you point your smartphone north! 🧭

    I point my smartphone in different directions – when it is in a 1/8th range of north, an attached microcontroller activates a vibration motor. A magnetic compass is shown for reference.

    flauschzelle,
    @flauschzelle@chaos.social avatar

    @blinry
    Similar to what was already said: make a case/holder for the motor, including some kind of clamp or socket for connecting the wires to anything else - so nothing can directly pull on the motor's wires.

    Of the icons available in the search field at https://squidfunk.github.io/mkdocs-material/reference/icons-emojis/, which ones do seem most intuitive to you to represent…:

    • “call for participation” (for a conference)
    • “video livestream” (of the presentations happening right now)
    • “video recordings” (of the presentations, after they’ve been held)

    Doesn’t have to be too formal, but please limit yourself to monochrome icons – no emojis!

    (yes this is for @guide of course it is)

    flauschzelle,
    @flauschzelle@chaos.social avatar

    @scy @guide

    For video recordings, I would think one of these:
    :fontawesome-regular-file-video:
    :fontawesome-solid-file-video:
    :material-file-video-outline:

    And then for video livestream, one of these (same without the "file" symbolism):
    :material-video-box:
    :octicons-device-camera-video-16:

    Call for participation is harder... maybe one of these?
    :material-calendar-question:
    :material-calendar-edit-outline:
    :material-microphone-question:
    :material-table-question:

    flauschzelle,
    @flauschzelle@chaos.social avatar

    @scy I also thought about the wireless camera icon for live streaming - so yes, I think that would be fine :)

    The rectangle with the play button could also work, but for me it just symbolizes "video on a screen", and doesn't indicate if it's a live stream or a recording.

    Interesting question just popped up. Consider this:

    my_list = ["a", "b", "c"]

    Now I’d like to do

    my_list[10] = "e"

    Obviously, that doesn’t work in Python, there’s no element at index 10, I can’t assign anything to it.

    But what if I wanted the list to automatically extend to be

    ["a", "b", "c", x, x, x, x, x, x, x, "e"]

    with x being some constant value (e.g. None, or 0, or "")? How would I do that efficiently, pythonic and without headaches and off-by-one errors (e.g. when slicing)?

    flauschzelle,
    @flauschzelle@chaos.social avatar

    @scy
    This made me think of the (sometimes very useful, but seems to be not widely known) 'defaultdict', and I wondered if there's also a 'defaultlist'...? Turns out it's not a standard thing like the defaultdict, but people have already come up with several different implementations, see here: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/8749542/creating-a-defaultlist-in-python
