Final wire shelf in the pantry is now assembled! Just slightly over one year since we embarked on this craziness the kitchen remodel is 100% complete!

I don’t think Budget Rent-A-Car is totally ready for accounting for electric vehicle rentals.

@glennf maybe they keep 8 gallons in the trunk just for fun? 🤣

Ask me anything…

@tswicegood now that you’re qualified to be Emperor of the World, what will you do with all that power???

Python people, do you make short-lived intermediate variables to make your return statements readable?

For example, which of these would you tend to prefer?

def get_project_name(output_str): """Get project name from output of

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@ehmatthes yep! Unless the operation is super simple like a single method call without arguments or maybe one argument. Think “strip()” or “reverse()” something very easy to grok.

Jeff wrote up how to use this Github Action to clean up old docker images which is super useful and saves you $$$. Now I need to read the action so I can duplicate this for non-Github docker image registries https://micro.webology.dev/2024/04/23/github-actions-cleaning.html?utm_campaign=Django%2BNewsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_source=Django_Newsletter_230

This is a great read for anyone trying to get to 100% utilization. It can't happen and it's actually really detrimental to overall productivity. https://flowchainsensei.wordpress.com/2024/02/16/the-urge-to-keep-people-busy-and-why-it-doesnt-work/ it's mentions a book called "Slack" (no, not that chat tool) that is a great deep dive on this topic.

I want to see absolutely no sensible and practical advice here. What programming language should I start vaguely and in a chill way teaching myself if I just want to experience something fun or elegant or interesting in and of itself, assuming I have no goal for using it to do anything really (outside of learning)

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@idan @grimalkina agree! I’ve been “learning” it for several years now and still feel like a beginner in many ways. Where something like Python I felt productive in a week.

story prompt: alternate universe where we still have iPhones/smartphones that are functionally identical to our versions of those things but due to a quirk of product development we call them "QuickTakes" and "cameras" rather than "iPhones" and "phones"

What are people's preferred tools for virtual environment management these days? I specifically care about being able to have hundreds of different project folders each with their own environment

I've been using pipenv for years despite not using Pipfiles - what else should I be considering in 2024?

I want a maximum of one command (equivalent to "pipenv shell") that I have to run in a directory in order to activate the corresponding environment

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@simeon @webology @simon not even one little teeny tiny bit. The fact people are worried about this baffles me.

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@webology @simeon THIS! Took me 5 minutes to move to uv. If the VCs force some strange move (as I can’t see Charlie doing it on his own) I can similarly move to vu if the time comes.

Side note I would love if this ever happens for the fork to be named fu. Cracking up just thinking about it. 🤣

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@simeon it’s real! But it’s not cobblestone path, just a rock wall around our fire pit. And the “Forrest” is actually just a couple of trees and then a road. We are about a mile from a more “real Forrest”
