Is it just me or did PyCon week come up really quickly this year?

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@tylerdave umm yeah. I’m gonna need them to move it back a few days so I can clear my TODO list off first.

@acdha @bitprophet I seem to remember reading somewhere it’s only a mile or two for a work day which obviously isn’t zero but shorter than most commutes. (I very well could be remembering incorrectly, but it was definitely less than 5)

@fallenhitokiri@social.screamingatmyscreen.com avatar

While it started as a joke I am actually considering to start a gaming blog for gamers over 30 who cannot avoid life.

Review criteria will be

  • does the game remind me of the controls?
  • can I get a summary what happened and what I’m supposed to do?
  • can I pick it up for 30-60 minutes and have fun?

Weekly summary of all posts will be sent on Friday evening.

It’s far from a fully thought out concept, but I like the idea and think this is a niche not well served.

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@fallenhitokiri be sure to include if it’s kid friend and/or multiplayer with spouse/partner/kids

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@fallenhitokiri I think both really. Often I find the official "For 13 and up" to be fairly conservative both in terms of appropriateness and just plain ability to play.

🤔 Do I know anyone who has used django-money in a project who has any insights to share?

I tend to fall back on avoid decimals (using Integer fields and then using Integer division) but I was debating switching a shopping cart over to django-money to cleanup some edge cases.

@webology what edge cases are there with integers? I can’t think of any…

17 years ago today I started working for myself full time. In many ways it seems like yesterday, but also sometimes like it has been longer. So glad I did, it's not easy by any stretch of the imagination but I still enjoy it most days!

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)

Background TV as I wind down my work day.

I'll work my way through the main 9 movies over the next few days, and starting with The Phantom Menace might be sacrilege to some, but who cares.

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@onelson I’m not at all hard of hearing but I live with many other humans and animals who like to make noises so I started turning on CC about a decade ago so I don’t miss the main important plot points. The state of CC across the board is pretty bad honestly. Old shows/movies, new shows/movies doesn’t seem to matter. I tried reporting a few things a few times to no avail. It’s frustrating

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@onelson I completely understand a misspelled word here or there. Even a slightly different wording of the same basic dialog (which I see all the time) or out of sync time a bit. But how a well watched old show (think West Wing or the like) can have two dozen major issues per episode decades later surprises me. It’s obvious no one cares.

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@onelson hah! I’ve seen that too when it’s the WRONG CC for the show, but to be fair I’ve also had a couple of streaming experiences where I got the wrong audio for the video being played. SpongeBob Episode for Hellraiser II (I joke but basically)

The ones that really frustrate me is when the character clear as day said “NO! Don’t run into the fire” and the CC is “(inaudible)”

What Python debugger are you using? I know about IDE debuggers, like PyCharm and VSCode, and of course pdb. Then there's pudb, which is a super nice terminal ui. What others are out there?

@raiderrobert obviously it’s because it’s 4X faster than Rust in most benchmarks.
