Pizza Day Three. Getting adventurous. Aji verde and mushroom on half and dill havarti on the other side.

Tepache, pineapple vinegar, pineapple champagne vinegar and pineapple ice cream (not pictured in freezer). Can you sense a theme? 🤣

frank,

Pineapple was on sale AND I’m making central/South American food today so needed a dessert to go with it. No pineapple was wasted in the making of these yummy food items today. The tops now decorate the counter.

@chrisjrn I’m not 100% sure on the champagne but it’s just an experiment anyway so not super concerned how fast it goes.

My fellow devs, I need your opinion:

Say, you have a software project. To do some operations more quickly, you write helper scripts. Think build.sh, download_dependencies.py, whatever. You may use them yourself or in CI.

What is your directory name of choice for these scripts?

See next post for clarification.

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@kytta I use “just” instead to build them. Sort of like Makefiles but better.

🤷 I never thought I'd be rendering PHP files in a Django app, and yet, here we are.

OMG Jira please just give me a way to do Markdown

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@carlton well there goes all my hopes and dreams

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@acdha @carlton I never understand anyone who likes their products. It just goes to show in enterprise software if you can sell the CEO it doesn't matter if the tech is good.

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@acdha @carlton OMG guys @simon lead me down a path on Twitter where I found out you can paste in Markdown in JIRA!

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@acdha @carlton @simon dunno but it works in the cloud if I paste raw Markdown

Nothing quite like the absurdity of modern life. Stepped outside with co-workers for the eclipse (which wasn't all that visible here) only to have to help haul in toilet paper, paper towels, and paper plates from the electric Amazon delivery truck that pulled up right then.

I guess I need a new Starbucks name

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@hynek there is a burger place here that people often given funny names because they announce them on a loud speaker. I suggest you use Batman from now on.

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@hynek it’s always silly and fun “Indiana Jones, your truffle fries are ready”

Write your tests folks! Kept having a minor annoying issue with some utility code that I run manually for a client. Have re-read it each time it messes up and didn't spot the issue until I took an extra 10 minutes and wrote comprehensive tests with example data.

It was processing a CSV file of emails, names and passwords to create and assign to something. If there wasn't a password in the 4th column it is supposed to generate one, which worked fine. But it wasn't setting them when it did exist reliably.

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@kytta naw empty lists are falsey in Python so you can just do ‘if not list’

Adam Gopnik review of Tim Ryback’s new book, Takeover: Hitler’s Final Rise to Power in March 25 New Yorker:

“What was once callled the petite bourgeoisie was key to his support—not people feeling the brunt of economic precarity but people feeling the possibility of it. Having nothing to fear but fear itself is having something significant to fear.”

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@xankarn and forget who said it originally but history doesn’t repeat but it often rhymes.
