It’s not wrong. But it’s not right, either.

“Creating Fluid Typography with the CSS clamp() Function”
https://www.sitepoint.com/fluid-typography-css-clamp-function/#:~:text=setting%2016px%20(or%20whatever%20value%20you%20want)%20as%20the%20root%20font%20size

It is, however, nice to see that my advocating for less broken fluid type approaches has paid off, even if the handwavy ‘accessibility’ explanations don’t point to my post that first raised them. It’s cool, it’s only my ego (and detailed explanations with examples).

@aardrian it reminds me of this attempt I've made some years ago.
I don't even know why I've used em instead of rem.
https://css-tricks.com/how-to-make-a-media-query-less-card-component/

Now with container queries it's easier to go further, I suppose. I'm a bit rusty in CSS 😅

Should designers code?

Brad Frost: "Telling web designers they don't need to worry about code is like telling architects they don't need to worry about steel, wood or physics."

And I agree. I would also say today's developers should also learn proper HTML and CSS, but that's for another time 😁

I'm discovering the Kim-e by CHRONUS Robotics

A wheel chair that allows users to adjust the "standing" position height depending on their needs or situation.

AI art is the new stock image!

  • AI images: quick but lack realness.
  • Recognizable clichés harm trust.
  • They all look the same.
  • Lack emotion, pose ethical issues.
  • Careful selection key in visual storytelling.
  • AI is a tool, not a replacement.

I've made my first handbag last week. Took me 4h of design (maybe more) and 16h of production.

I've made some mistakes and need to adjust the design. But that was fun to make, and I've learned a lot.

Thinking about the wallet company that announced that "at least 30% of our products are bought as gifts." they got this number by assuming that all customers with feminine names were women buying the wallet for a husband, boyfriend or father.

They were totally unaware of their female customers and somehow actively invested in not discovering those customers existed.

@futurebird this is a priceless example of bias is action. I love it for two reasons: as a UX designer, but also as a hobbyist leathercrafter during the weekend.

I found something useful in my case, and that's going to surprise all the white males in the room: I ask my customers. Under the excuse of "what occasion?" so I can add a small customized message or gift in the package. (I know I'm introducing other kinds of biases here)

In my case, around 78% of women were buying for themselves.

stephaniewalter, to Figma

Should designers learn to code? Well, not necessarily, but, as soon as you start playing with complex prototyping tools (like Axure or now Figma too), you might want to learn some basics of programming concepts like variables and conditions

geoffreycrofte,
@geoffreycrofte@mastodon.design avatar

@awoodsnet @stephaniewalter What you are proposing is a complete waste of time IMHO.
Nowadays, tools like Figma allows designers and developers to find a middle ground where Figma prototypes can translate into React components, or even working websites.

Honest question: Why would I replace the necessary complexity of my reusable Design System components with static HTML, CSS and JS?

Knowing how HTML works, ok. Actually coding? Not really. A pencil with no chapel.
