Today is the last day of the chess site chess24. It has been the premier chess event broadcasting site for the past 5+ years.

While websites come and go, it is sad that this one was swallowed by the chess behemoth, chess.com which is trying to dominate the online chess world, much like meta is trying to dominate the online social media world.

gmmds,

@chestas Yes was definitely my favourite too. I love @lichess of course and all they represent, but I found chess24 an easy site to navigate with pleasant and entertaining commentators. Just a nice, friendly experience watching chess. Definitely poorer without it.

We've got the website back up and running on the newer version of Mastodon. I'm just updating the content processing now and then I'll get the other web server updated so we have our scale and resiliency back online.

gmmds,

@wild1145 Brilliant work! Thanks!

Mad on chess variants? Take a look at https://fairy-stockfish.github.io/ (thanks to @lichess for pointing this out!)

Richard Teichmann (1868-1925) lost his right eye in his youth, causing him to wear a patch over his eye. After he won the monster Karlsbad 1911 tournament, the quip was made that "in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king"!

Phoebe through the window 😊 There’s a definite “Why do you give me so little food?” vibe to that look 🧐🥺

Phoebe has found her dream place 😊

If you want the latest open source engines but don't want to have to compile them yourselves, then take a look at the ipman site: https://ipmanchess.yolasite.com/compiles.php Lots of great stuff on here including Crystal 6 (fortress specialising Stockfish fork) and The Huntsman (mate-finding Stockfish fork)

gmmds,

Want to know what Crystal can do? Well take this position (end of a 1949 study by Zakhodyakin that my friend Steve Giddins published on FB) Normal Stockfish 16 and Leela both see a win for Black but Crystal gives 0.00 within a few seconds!

Ju Wenjun-Lei Tingjie following.... Anand-Sadler until move 14. Vishy played 14.0-0-0 Be6 and I drew easily. Ju Wenjun playing the more challenging 14.Bc4. This was one of the lines that made me wary of playing the Tarrasch as Black against weaker opponents. I was quite confident I could draw against stronger opponents, but equally confident that I was most unlikely to beat a weaker player with Black!

gmmds,

By the way, what a strange move order for a Tarrasch! I've rarely seen cxd5 played so early (only in Keith Arkell's games actually where he only wants a Carlsbad structure) and heading back for a Tarrasch with 4...c5 is very unusual!

Who was the first player to really appreciate the attacking potential of the isolated queen’s pawn? Many would say Mikhail Botvinnik in the 1930s but Dawid Janowski 20-30 years earlier seems to have just as good a claim! Take a look at this quickfire win against future World Championship challenger Efom Bogolyubow https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNOjwQ2lgFI

The match between Lei Tingjie (challenger) and Ju Wenjun (defender) is started! Will the first game already be decisive?

gmmds,

Why is moving the white rook to d8 illegal? It doesn't accept Rd8 either.

I don't care whether it is the best move, just why it is illegal.

gmmds,

@fzimper It's not illegal

A Polish Defence at the CCCC. In honour of Magnus? 😉

gmmds,

Judging how it's going for Black, Leela is also paying hommage to Magnus' result! 😂

gmmds,

13.Ne5! Now that's a cool move!

gmmds,

@runarcn The game is currently going on here: https://www.chess.com/computer-chess-championship Looks like Leela is defending, but I loved the idea! 😊

A while ago, I had a conversation with a rather strong player about the value of the centre in chess, particualrly in relation to Chess960. We both felt that the centre's value has been inflated by the standard chess starting position (where it really does matter!) Shuffle the pieces around a bit and you see this... 1.7 for White despite Black's classical double pawn centre! It's the same in shogi: the centre is of little general value there too.

gmmds,

@kohelet Well the point is that with standard chess, all of your pieces naturally point towards the centre and protect squares there so establishing central influence generally maximises their activity. With C960, the strength of pieces concentrates differently, some pieces (e.g. a queen on h8) end up being blocked in by central pawns. The value of central occupation - and the value of realsiing it quickly - is very much context-dependent.
