A Notice:

We are recommending servers add "qoto.org" to their Fediblock lists, and where possible add IP blocks to prevent their servers crawling and fetching content. We've found tonight that despite our instance suspending them a week ago, a post I posted there tonight was boosted by the qoto site admin, which suggests they are actively bypassing suspensions and fetching content when they have been blocked.

Screenshots attached with the audit of block and boost.

I also just checked and this seems to have monumentally damaged the use count on the server.

I dont know exactly when this was enacted but in recent months the user count for the server plummeted from 80K to 20K and has month by month been continually decreasing since then as people flock away from the server. I suspect the use of this extremely abusive block list, and perhaps similar decisions are a large part of the reason.

wild1145,

@admin @freemo FWIW - Universeodon didn't exist until November 2022 and I didn't take over the running of it until the summer of 2023.

Unfortunately I suspect the previous ownership and staff didn't really review appeals given the quantity of them that were outstanding when I took over ownership.

wild1145,

@admin I get that, I can't speak for why you were suspended or why you didn't get a response. The most I can do is apologise, it's not how we do things now, if someone has been banned and they appeal, we make sure to review and either approve it if we fucked up and got it wrong, or reject it if we see it as being a valid sanction.

wild1145,

@admin There's nothing automatic about it, it's a list that I import and then review as part of the import. My choice to use the list was based off months of reviewing the list and the way it was curated, and the fact it can't be swayed by one or even two of the instances's ban lists that contribute towards it.

I haven't got the time, capacity or funding to hire the people to review the quantity of instances that we federate with in order to make decisions in the proactice way we should be.

wild1145,

@admin The list won't be perfect, but I've had no complaints in the months of using it here on MastodonApp.UK or even queries about why instances aren't connecting, and on Universeodon there was one person that questioned why their friends were on an instance that we'd blocked which was quickly discussed and resolved.

As far as I can see the list works for everything I need and want for the type of instance I am running here.

I've finally gotten around to setting up and am testing the Instagram import feature, hoping everything will import nicely and I can finally ditch the need to upload there (and get around to uploading the boat load of pictures I haven't gotten around to uploading)

My apologies to the folks here on and where there have been delays with removing some of the spam sign-up accounts. I've been working to add a lot of new IP restrictions based on the accounts that are signing up as well as making sure we don't just catch the accounts that are suspended but also the other accounts that used the same custom e-mail domain or IP Address. It just takes a lot more time than the one click to ban the account.

Still waiting for OVH to give us the new Floofy hardware :(

wild1145,

@arch How come there's such a delay? I've generally never waited more than maybe 5 mins for hardware to be allocated.

wild1145,

@arch Oh weird, yeah I've bought those and the Kimsufi ones before and 99% of the time it's near instant. Wondering if they're low on that spec of boxes and they've had one that broke or something weird. Very strange either way.

Interesting find tonight. If I block IP addresses to and from in , media from is blocked. I simply see placeholders instead of actual media. I can also look at logs and see the timed out calls to media.universeodon.com. I thought was hosted in the . Is this some weird geoip hiccup?

wild1145,

@chad I also have Russia blocked (and a number of other locations) on my home network and don't have this issue, but have seen quite a few folks have geo IP restrictions that block media. I suspect it's something weird with our Cloudflare CDN as well as the overall config of how media is working. I have a fairly significant change I need to make to Universeodon's tech stack and after that it'll be interesting to see if the issue is still there for folks.

So I've been trying tonight to migrate my Unifi protect from my Dream Machine to a dedicated NVR. I followed some guides that talked through how I could preserve all of my data and took great care to preserve it all.

I've just seen a re-install of the Protect app (Recommended on their forums) slowly format all of my data despite it being mid way through trying to mirror the storage.

I am really feeling quite fucking done with this thing now.

wild1145,

So in total that's 4TB of footage that's gone, but on the bright side the new system is now working and can at least scale. Time for bed though as I have an early start in the morning.

Turns out my home internal firewall rules were a touch too aggressive which explains why I couldn't connect to the new server I was trying to get setup. I probably need to spend some time getting all the rules setup properly on there at some point!

wild1145,

@peteorrall I've got a Ubiquity Dream Machine SE which has been working pretty nicely. I might at some point setup more of a home lab where I can go back to tinkering with OpnSense (Which is what we use for all the Mastodon servers) but for now something stable and that doesn't require constant intervention has been really nice!

So it appears that has decided to go down the route of every other remote desktop access software.

Restricting their free personal use access to try and force people to give them money.

This would be the 3rd time I've had to start looking for new software.

I use it to access the 3 systems in my own home only.

They keep cutting my sessions off... Last POS company that did that used to do it after 60 seconds. At least they're letting sessions last longer... for now.

Time to switch

wild1145,

@anomnomnomaly There's a few open source / self-hosted ones you can get out there with clients I've seen, I've considered hosting my own but need remote desktop software so very infrequently I haven't reached a "Urgh let's install it" moment yet.

It's been an interesting evening of spreadsheet building trying to work out if a new business I'm considering launching could be financially viable.

The spreadsheet works, I just need to do some sanity checking now on the numbers but given it's gone 1AM, that's a problem for tomorrow.

wild1145,

Mistakes were made and I just realised I came up for bed 40 mins ago ns ended up sitting on my desktop tinkering with my spreadsheet further. Whoops.

Time for bed. Might be a later start tomorrow than planned!

I'm trying to be intentionally more productive with my time, which is hard because there's nothing I'd love to do more than just do nothing and mong over the weekeneds after a long week.

Yesterday wasn't so productive but today has been a bit of house work, cooking up a big batch of Chilli Con Carne which is still simmering away now, as well as some cleaning up of some servers I've had kicking around costing money on old personal projects that just need archiving and closing off.

wild1145, to random

I think it's time for a bowl of cereal, a bit of YouTube and then to get on with a load of jobs I have to get done today around the house!

That's me had another toot removed from this site, all because the racist left wing people can't stand others like me having a different opinion, yeah I'll say it again, all heroin & methadone users deserve to rot in jail or either be left for dead, but then again this is mastodon targeting me all because I'm whit and British so what they going to do now remove me or my prfile, yes there lots I don't like but I don't get offe8and report people for having a different opinion to others

wild1145,

@pennypenguin Hi, as the person who both owns this site and performed the moderation action on your posts, I'd strongly suggest you actually take the time to read our server rules ( https://mastodonapp.uk/about ) which you agreed to by signing up to the site. Both posts were removed for violating them. As with all moderation decisions you're welcome to appeal it, but frankly following the 8 simple rules for using this site shouldn't be a big deal.

wild1145,

@pennypenguin You aren't being targeted, let me just make that absolutely clear now. We moderate in the same way for everyone, on the sites we run and do so in line with our rules.

The first post that was deleted was in violation of rule 2, and the second post was deleted for violation of rule 6.

You are absolutely entitled to your own opinions, but when those opinions conflict and break our servers rules, the content will be deleted, as has always been the case for all members.

wild1145,

@pennypenguin People shouting for the rich to be murdered has at no point been okay, and again, content like that is moderated when we either see if on the timelines ourselves or when it's reported to us.

If you feel so strongly about the way your content was moderated, I'd encourage you either find another server, or head back to Twitter. We've been very reasonable in simply deleting the posts rather than limiting or suspending your account for breaking multiple rules in a short period.

wild1145,

@pennypenguin Very well. I would encourage you to find elsewhere. You are no longer welcome on the site given your poor attitude and inability to realise you fucked up.

Just wanted to share a bit of an eye opening experience. @PrinceMumbles and I have had a bit of an increase in take-out orders where I've been working a lot further away from home than usual and he's been super busy with his work and neither of us wanted to come home and cook, tonight was one of those nights and we had one this time last week as well.

The difference last week is we wanted to order from a place we had not tried but heard good things about, but they were only on

wild1145,

The long and short of it all is I'm even more impressed with Deliveroo now having seen how bad their competition is at what is fundamentally the same thing.

It's this sort of stuff that makes people more likely to be loyal to a brand when they're treated right, and the absolutely shit service from Uber means I have absolutely no desire to order from them unless I have quite literally no other choice.

Kudos to Deliveroo for actually providing real and quality customer service.

wild1145,

@Whiskeyomega I haven't used them very much for cars, they don't really operate where I live and the only place I frequent that they do operate is London, and I'd prefer to hail down a black cab any day of the week.

I think I have used them maybe once in the last year, and that was to get a car from Heathrow to my house (90mins - 2 hours away depending on traffic) and that's only because local taxi's wouldn't take me.
