#SplitHappens - part 11. We had heard that Croatia had good wines, and decided to tour the wine regions. It didn’t take long before we were disabused of the notion that Croatia’s wine country would be anything like Italy’s Chianti Road. This was before iPhones, so we were relying on a printed version of directions we downloaded from Google Maps. More than once I just threw up my hands when the directions said “Go straight for 43.3 km. Turn left.” That’s all. Turn left. #TravelTuesday

#BloomScrolling I’m so sorry that I won’t be here for the daylilies this year. There was a stand here when we bought the house, but I’ve divided and divided them and planted them everywhere. They are special to me because they were my grandmother’s favorite flower. She loved to create hybrids and she had hundreds. The Macon Daylily Club used to make the hour trip each summer to her farm to see her hybrids in bloom. #Umbria June, 2022

I will never get over the fact that going out to dinner these days costs more than my first car. Last night we decided to celebrate and go to one of our favorite places that had closed but has returned temporarily as a pop-up. We knew it would be expensive, but felt that at least we wouldn't leave pissed off because we knew it would be worth it. We still ended up leaving pissed off because they added a credit card surcharge on top of the cost of my first car. 🤬How is this sustainable?

Word comes today from #Umbria of our pitiful olive harvest this year. It was a strange year, and between the bugs and the heat we didn't have an abundant crop to start with, but recent high winds caused many olives to fall prematurely. So not such a great year for the olives, but that tracks because 2023 has been pretty terrible all around! I do love the olive harvest season and I miss the camaraderie. It's really hard work, but I've never done anything more satisfying.

We learned yesterday that the rehab hospital plans to discharge my mom next week with orders for home health care. I had planned to go back to GA for 2 weeks after her discharge to help with her transition, and I will, but this seems too soon! She is nowhere near capable of living independently right now and even with the home health care ordered, this feels like a real challenge for me. I'm not ready to adult like this!

Will this year of crap coming out of left field ever stop? Just after we got home from celebrating my Italian citizenship last night, I got a call that my mom had fallen and was on the way to the ER. She was transferred to Macon during the night with a suspected brain bleed. I am so tired of spinning from one crisis to another. Can it just be 2024 already?

Today is the traditional Thai New Year's, which is celebrated on April 13, but actually lasts for four days. It is celebrated with water fights. If you go out on the 13th, you can expect to be hit with water from hoses, water pistols or just bowls of water from a big drum. We were in Bangkok last year on this day and we were a little taken aback when people started squirting us at the restaurant. Now we're like "Bring it!" 🤣 Mai Khao Beach, Phuket, Thailand.
