We only smelled gas in the basement, but they wanted to inspect the whole house, and I swear there was a brief moment where I thought “My house is so messy, I’d rather die in a fire than have them traipse through my whole house!” I console myself that they’ve probably seen worse.
@vpermar Yeah, I looked at the PG&E website, and it said to call 911, which seemed kind of dramatic to me. On the other hand, I had a cousin whose house exploded many years ago, so I am inclined not to take chances.
@grammargirl I was so disappointed to hear an egregious error on your latest podcast that I felt compelled to set the record straight. And so, riffing on an evergreen opening line of a timeless novel, I can only state:
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that the cardboard tube at the centers of rolls of paper products have always been, and will always be, known as a "der-der".
I trust you will set the record straight in light of this fact.
@yeliab Haha, you had me going there for a second! It's funny though ... you're the second person to let me know your family has a slight variation on the caller's name.

We're the best!!! Grammar Girl just made the Writer's Digest list of 101 Best Websites for Writers! 🎉🎉🎉
We've been on the list before for the website, but this year is special because it's the first time we're on the list for the PODCAST. (Yes, the list of websites has a category for podcasts and YouTube channels.)
It means so much to me to know that people love and appreciate the show. Thank you to Writer's Digest and to all the people who listen! 1/2
A lot of people help make the show and help make it a business so I can devote my time to it.
A big thank you to all the people at QDT: Holly Hutchings, Davina Tomlin, Brannan Goetschius, Morgan C., Kamryn Lacy, Nathan Semes, and Mary Beth Roche.
And a big thank you to ALL my guest writers, and especially to those most featured this year: Valerie Fridland, Susan K. Herman, Samantha Enslen, Philip Neal Whitman, Bonnie Mills, Edwin Battistella, and Brenda Thomas.
@elaterite Thanks again!!! It's funny ... I've noticed that milestone coming up, but my main thought is usually "Maybe if I don't mention it to the QDT people, they won't notice, and I won't have to do a big celebration."
Not that I'm necessarily opposed to celebrating, but the month-long 15th anniversary celebrations were exhausting.
Do you like word games? Love dictionaries and history? If so, join me tomorrow night (May 11) when I'll be playing word games with a bunch of fabulous language people to benefit the Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society.
