Ok, gotta hit the store and get stuff to make drinks and dinner for Eurovision.

Before anyone gets huffy, I have a child who is quite unwell and this is literally the ONLY thing she looks forward to doing with me all year. So we will watch.

The story about the late U of Utah retired chemist with the dynamite exploding in his house kind of hits me weirdly because the neighbourhood is one I lived in as a little kid and my dad got his PhD there. (For RL friends: YES, that is the location of the infamous bank parking lot)

Anyhow, I guess the dude was a grad student there around when my dad was, but I don't remember him. But it did drag me to the web page, which has an extensive history of the department, and ah... memories.

I used to sit on Bob Parry's lap and eat chocolates and chat with him. He always treated me like a special person and took me seriously. We were buddies. We used to go to parties at Goji Kodama's house and I adoooooored his kids. I managed to offend Jack Simons at about 3 years old (long story involving swearing), and, the glassblower, Hans Morrow, was not only a chess master who taught me checkers, but he was a wonderfully nice guy who kept me company while my dad was in class. So, well... yeah.

It's a weird and treasured part of my childhood, not related to the story at all, but it's dredged up a lot of feels.

Wish I could still talk to my dad.

At least HE isn't keeping weird chemicals around the house XD

Oh no. Have fallen into the trap of an album I still really love.

It's a good album in any event, but Duncan Sheik's eponymous debut album is firmly settled in a couple of points in my timeline where I listened to it constantly, and it brings me back to some of myself.

Tidal: May I suggest this Chick Corea and Bela Fleck album?

Me: Jesus Christ, Tidal. I don't want to fangirl recommendation algorithms, but you are GOOD, Girl.

I wish Switch had a Wii Fit variant.

Yeah, I know it has Wii Sports, but I actually found Wii Fit helpful.

Can't find my old Wii now anyway, and probably it wouldn't work since Nintendo shut a bunch of network stuff down anyway, but still.

I'm think I'm at a weird watershed moment right now.

I could really try to dive in and integrate more, or I could start working on preparation to establish myself somewhere more accepting.

I don't have the energy for both. And I've moved close to 40 times in my life, so I really need to pick a course and stop this madness.

My side of the family is known for chronic sinus issues, which just makes it worse when one of us gets a cold.

Nasal irrigation might be kind of gross, but man... is it effective.

One of the things I ask myself before approving or rejecting your follow request is "are you safe?"

Are you likely to try to hurt me, mine, or other people?

Are you likely to scream at me?

Are YOU hurting so much from something that my opinions will hurt you, even if they are rational?

Are you in a place where you demand a great deal of empathy that I am not in a place to give because of my own circumstances at the moment?

I have never refused a follow because of race, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, education, number of orange cats in your household, or wrong opinions on pineapple pizza. I generally refuse because of ME.

It's not a commentary on you. You might not be safe because you are going through some shit, or I am.
Or because you're a bot follow (no thanks).

Mormons aren't quite the same KIND of fundamentalists as the rapturous quiverfull folks, but, well... They have a kind of similar thing. And they certainly expect big names to toe the conservative line, just saying.

It is really hard to convince people that anything larger than, say, a tiny chicken taco in a soft corn tortilla will not fit into your stomach.

Or that you really don't want snacks, just hydration 🤣

Even if they know you aren't hard up for cash 🤣

Look, the "don't panic" vibe here is a big deal, and sometimes that's fine. Often it is thought-policing, which is super NOT.

I tend to step back and think when there is controversy instead of reacting, though I have my moments.

But let me just say that my suspicion that it's going to eventually become necessary for many of us to block mastodon.social and hope that most of our friends and favorites are only using it as a jumping off point before they find (soon) greener, smaller pastures is growing VERY quickly.

And I swear to God that anyone who mansplains to me the obvious problem with what I just said will get blocked, even if I like you.

I am just telling you that that is the increasingly foul scent I catch in the wind - a megaserver that is poorly moderated/cannot be moderated combined with advisors from the worst of social media is a ripe environment for the worst things.

If .social were a time-limited entry point you have to migrate off of, it wouldn't stop the bad behaviour, but it wouldn't make it any harder than it is now, and the network would be better balanced. It'd also, more altruisticly, perhaps cut down on their costs. But I still don't know how you deal with this massive behemoth that is becoming an increasingly large issue/threat without seriously discussing using the banhammer.

It's going to be ugly.

If you are on .social, I really encourage you to look for a smaller instance, or if you are just a bit technically inclined, run an instance yourself! (It isn't that difficult, though the instructions could use some love)

It'll dilute the single-point-of-failure problem, and ensure you are still connected if folks start blocking .social at some point in the future.

I have no actual plans to, but well, I have a tendency to get out just before things get bad, and my Spidey Sense is atingle.

There is a natural foods grocery across from my hotel.

Went there looking for some protein and some fiber.

Excited when I saw the Bayrischer Krautsalat, which looked locally prepared and tasty. I am a fan.

Way less excited when I saw its second ingredient was sugar.

Fortunately it was next to some kimchi that advertised having extra ginger (AND IT DOES) which doesn't have any sugar at all.
