Mormons aren't quite the same KIND of fundamentalists as the rapturous quiverfull folks, but, well... They have a kind of similar thing. And they certainly expect big names to toe the conservative line, just saying.
Not claiming people are acting like fascists because of their religion. I don't know what he personally believes about anything.
But the LDS Church, especially in Utah, is big on law and order, and for example national law enforcement agencies like to recruit members because of it. It's cultural.
(should be clear about sth. here - my dad grew up LDS but never believed and had a very hard time getting away, and I am certainly not (and never was). I have family members I love in the church, so my comments are specifically about culture, not trying to generalize to all individuals)
